What brings you here at this late hour?” I ask as she seats herself across from me.“I came to talk to you about tomorrow, Kenshin.” She started, looking at me with soft blue eyes. “Me and Yahiko have to go out of town for the day to earn some money, since we’re almost out.” She said glaring at me.“What? Did I do something wrong?” I ask leaning away slightly. Kaoru-dono is very scary when she gets mad…“No, I just need to you to run to the market for me since we seem to run out of food every two days. It was a plain white kimono with a black rose (^.^) design starting at the bottom and trailed around you till it reached your chest. You brushed your hair back and placed it in a low ponytail, letting your bangs flop however they wanted.You walked out the door and headed to the kitchen, intending to prepare breakfast, but upon your arrival, you already saw Kenshin running around cooking.“Himura-san?” You called to him. He said it was to atone for his sins, what they were you didn’t know and for some reason, part of you didn’t want to know.You felt a small tug on your hand and looked down at Ayame, who was trying to pull free. You released her hand and watched as she began to tug on Kenshin’s shirt sleeve.“Uncle Kenny!” She called at him. He looked down at her and she held her arms up. “Piggy-back please?” She said with a big smile. Kenshin chuckled and lifted her up onto his shoulders. You smiled at the image, it was just too cute.Suzume gasped next to you. You turned to see what was wrong but her face was lit up in a giant grin, she had spotted a magician.She looked up at you, “Can we go watch the magician Aunty ________? Ayame asked Kenshin to put her down and she grabbed Suzume’s hand and they rushed off to the growing crowd that the magician had attracted.You and Kenshin walked up behind the girls as the magician began to pull handkerchiefs from his shirt sleeve. He began to ask for volunteers for his next trick and Ayame and Suzume jumped up and down trying to get his attention. He noticed them and called them forth. You looked on with a small smile on your face at the girls. More people began to gather around as the tricks became more elaborate with the girls.“Your daughters are adorable.” You heard a woman’s voice say from somewhere beside you. You looked around and saw a woman about twenty years old with long black hair pulled into a loose ponytail, wearing a white kimono with a red and black obi. She had a periwinkle colored sash hanging around her fore arms and her eyes were a dark brown, but even though her expression was warm, the eyes held a soft sadness to them, like she was about to lose something dear.“Oh, they’re not--” You began to say, but were cut off by the lady.“Please, take care of Kenshin for me.” She said and began to walk away. Your eyes widened in shock as she just seemed to slip through the crowd. You tried to follow her, to find out what she meant but to no avail.By the time you reached the outskirts of the crowd, the lady was gone.Kenshin popped out of the crowd a minute later holding Ayame and Suzume and found you. You nodded.“Yep, I was just about to start preparing dinner too.” You said, binding your sleeves back with a piece of cloth. He left the kitchen while you looked for a pot.You readied a small pot with water and put it on the small fire that you had started. Grabbing a carrot that you had purchased at the market, you began to slice it evenly into small chunks. While you were slicing, you felt the blade slice the tender flesh of your finger and you hissed from the pain. Blood trickled out of the cut and trailed down your finger. You grabbed a towel that was nearby and applied it to your bleeding finger. You left the kitchen the find some bandages but encountered Kenshin on the way.“______-dono, what happened?” He said looking at your hand. Blood had seeped through the towel and was visible as a big stain.“Oh nothing, just sliced my finger open preparing the carrots. Where are the bandages at?” You asked him trying to brush off the sting that was slowly creeping up your finger.“Yes, this way.” He took you to a small closet and inside lay the bandages. You removed the towel from your finger and watched as Kenshin cleaned it off and wrapped it carefully.His touch sent shivers down your spine and you felt your heart begin to pound. You knew your cheeks were turning red and you tried to hide it by looking away, but you couldn’t look away.His red hair hung in his eyes, which were concentrating on your hand. You looked at the scar that always intrigued you, made you wonder how he got it.“Kenshin…” You said softly, not even realizing you had said it. His gaze quickly met yours, his eyes wide with shock. You become conscious of what you had just said and you quickly covered you mouth with your hand. Your face turned a bright red as you looked down and began to mutter apologies.You saw his hand come into your line of vision as it cupped under your chin. He pulled your face up to look at him, his violet eyes looking deep into your own. He was leaning forward as if to emphasize his look. His eyes had gone from shock to longing but you couldn’t understand why.His hand fell from your chin and he smiled, that same sad smile. “You were wondering about it again, weren’t you?” He asked sitting back on his heels. You nodded with your face still pink. He sighed.“This scar was given to me by my late wife.”You could feel your face contort in shock. He went on explaining how he had killed her fiancé and how she had wanted to get revenge on him, but couldn’t because they fell in love. It was during the time when he still considered himself the Hitokiri Battousai.You listened to his tale and felt the sadness loom within you.
