~Selena's eyes were questioning but she just shrugged it off. The two kept walking in silence, but for the first time it was a comfortable silence. After a few, more hills, the two traveling companions came to a fork in the road. One road led into a city and the other lead around it. It seemed the question had finally come, would the two part ways here or would this story continue. ~
~~~~~~~~~On with the story~~~~~~~~~~
Selena walked a few steps ahead of Soujiro slowly began reading the name of the town. “T… Too… To-kyo… oh Tokyo!” Selena gave a little joyful cry when she successfully pronounced the word, in the back of Soujiro’s mind he noted her trouble reading Japanese, and while Selena spoke Japanese perfectly, hearing her read it showed, Japanese was not her first and native language.
However only in the back of Soujiro’s mind did this register because most of his mind was taking up with sad feelings and thoughts about their parting. This confused Soujiro slightly, he didn’t understand why he felt a great sadness in his heart, and he had only known Selena a few hours. For the first time in a long time, he was sad to see someone leave his side. Something about her called out to him and calmed him all at once. Looking into her eyes, it was like the questions that had kept him walking all these years didn’t exist anymore, that everything around him and in his troubled soul was finally at peace.
Nevertheless, he knew he had to keep going to find the truth, and then maybe he could start repenting for his sins. Right now he couldn’t touch her she was pure and he was dirty with blood, she deserved more. Moving up beside her he smiled a fake smile at her, just as he was about to speak though he caught the sadness in her eyes. He remember she didn’t like his fake smile, but, what more could he do, he couldn’t show how sad he truly was, could he? His smile dropped and for the first time in a long time, he showed a different emotion then happy on his face and in his eyes, he showed sadness.
“Well here you go Miss Selena; I’ve escorted you to the next city. ”
He wanted to curse why of all the cities did the next city have to be this one, one of the only two cities he feared entering. The only two he had stay far away from for all these years. Selena’s voice saved him before he could once again get lost in the dark thoughts of his past.
“What is the matter Soujiro?”
“I… um… just didn’t realize we were this close to Tokyo.” Soujiro rationalized, that it was only half a lie.
“Is that bad?”
“No, don’t worry about it Miss Selena.”
He turned and began to walk away from the road that leads to town and Selena. When her had reached out and grabbed his, turning he saw a flash of an emotion he couldn’t name in her eyes. It was gone before he could define it and Selena started speaking. “Wait! Don’t go! Well… well you did save me so… why don’t you come with me and I’ll buy you some food. It’s the least I can do… after all you did ‘save me’. Besides you do look a little thin.”
Soujiro’s mind was racing why did she want to help him, and what could he tell her? He couldn’t just say, oh I can’t go into Tokyo because some people live there, that could recognize me, and get me arrested for killing and around being a bad guy in the past. But, wait she didn’t owe him anything, she didn’t need his help in the first place, right? “ Oh you don’t have to do that. And I thought you said you didn’t need my help, so I didn’t save you, therefore there is nothing to repay.”
“Of course I have to. Now come on!”
Selena grabbed Soujiro’s hand and began pulling him toward town. Soujiro could have refused, been gone in a flash and leave her, but he was too catch up in the feel of her hand around his. With in minutes they had reached the city of Tokyo and were making their way down the busy center street. Selena turned her head this way and that, pointing out restaurants debating whether to eat there or not. This was the pattern until she saw one she liked, a beef-pot restaurant. Pulling Soujiro along they went it, a tall burnet server seated them and then brought them some tea. After she walked away to get their food Selena and Soujiro started sipping their tea.
Soujiro was becoming more and more at easy, the two carried on normal conversation comparing the places Soujiro and Selena had seen on their travels. All seemed to be going well, until Soujiro heard a voice approaching, one he knew all to well, his stomach dropped. Selena seemed to sense his change and looked like she was about to question him on it when, Soujiro was grabbed by the collar of his kimono haled out of his seat. Now Soujiro was face to face with his once enemy Sanoska. Beyond Sanosake’s shoulder, he could see Kenshin and the rest of his friends; Kenshin was watching him, his hand upon his reverse blade sword. The restaurant went deathly silent as all eyes fell on Soujiro and Sano. Soujiro eyes quickly darted back to Sano as he started talking.
“What the hell are you doing back here? Wanted men like you usually stay away from cities and to show up in this one of all of them, you got a lot of balls.”
“I didn’t come to fight.”
“Ha don’t make me laugh the only thing you know how to do is fight. So, what is it came to finish what Shishio started? Or, did you just come for another fight with Kenshin? Cause if that’s the case you’ll have to get through me first. You little…”
“Put him down you Ox!”
Selena cut off Sano. Who still hadn’t moved from her spot, but was giving Sano a death glare that could have frozen hell over. Sano looked at her as if noticing her for the first time. Then smiling a cool smile he spoke to her in the same tone he would use when addressing a naive child.
“Look Missy I don’t know what this guy has told you, or made you believe. However, he is a very dangerous man; a pretty thing like you really shouldn’t be around him. Now why don’t you run along home, find some guy more worthy of your time.”
Soujiro could have swore it dropped ten degrees in the restaurant and Selena’s eyes took on an iciness that Soujiro had only seen in a few trained cold blooded killers, and her tone when deadly calm and cold. “Look who ever you are. I don’t know how you know Soujiro, and I don’t really care. But, if you don’t get two things through your thick head right now, and put Soujiro down then you and I are going to have problems. First off, my name is not ‘Missy’ it is Selena, not that you deserve to know. Second, never talk to me like a child. I make my own decisions and I choose to be around Soujiro, I find him worthy of my time unlike men like you. Now put my friend down.” By the time, she had finished talking her words had taken on a steal like hardness. Her eyes had never left Sano’s and in-fact if possible the glare’s power felt like it had increased. Looking at her now, Soujiro was sure if any normal man was catch in a glare like this it would send him reeling, crawling and whimpering to the ground.
Sano however, was not a normal person, and he ether wasn‘t phased by her glare or was hiding his fear and discomfort. Small, almost unnoticeable tremors in Sano‘s arm were leading Soujiro to believe it was the latter. “Why you, I’m trying to protect you and this is the thanks I get you little bi…” Sano never finish his sentence as Selena teacup came flying at and smashed into his head.
Sharp gasps filled the restaurant, as Selena stood up her. “Don’t you dare talk to me like some common gutter trash! I can guarantee, you underestimate me and you will be very lucky to limp out of this restaurant! Now I’m telling you put my friend down and walk away right now! Or, you and I can take this outside! An Ox like you scares me no more then a house fly.”
“Why you…”
“Sano I think that is enough. Soujiro says he did not come to fight and as of now he hasn’t done anything wrong.” This time Kenshin interrupted Sano. Sano’s eyes moved from Selena to Kenshin, as a look of disbelief swept over him.
“But Kenshin we can’t just let him go. We do and more people could die, I mean who knows what he is planning.”
“Yes that is true but as of now he hasn’t done anything and I think we should give him the benefit of the doubt. That we should.”
Selena’s eyes darted in-between the ox and the red head, with a look on her face as if deciding which one’s throat to rip out first. She watched as the ox lowered Soujiro to the ground and then in a flash, she was by his side. Her eyes scanned over him checking for injuries. Soujiro notice her anxiousness and putting on the smile, she liked, and he spoke. “No worries Miss Selena I’m fine. No harm done.”
This seem to please her as she turned back to their table, stopping only long enough to throw one more icy glare at Sano. Soujiro joined her at their table a moment later and the ox and his friends turned and went to theirs. Selena eyes however, quickly move from the table to around the restaurant, everyone was still watching them.
“Alright people nothing to see here go back to your meals! Waitress can I please have a new tea-cup?” It seemed the whole restaurant exhaled a deep breath it’d been holding at Selena’s loud decree. Soujiro smile as everyone in the restaurant seemed to go back to their meals; even as he could feel eyes on him, he didn’t let it bother him. He watch as the waitress bought Selena a new cup. Waiting until the waitress had walked away, he turned and smile at Selena then spoke. “You didn’t have to stand up like that Miss Selena, but thank you, no one has ever done anything like that for me. And about what Sano said…”
Selena cut him off quickly. “Soujiro shut up. I don’t care, killer or savior it’s your role, your choice. The only thing I care about is that you’re my friend and you were in trouble. Plus, if I let something happen to you then who would, I travel with. Besides no matter whichever you are, I think I can take care of myself.”
It took a moment for all of what Selena said to sink in, with a bit of a gasp he questioned her. “Wait a minute what do you mean, travel with. I told you I would escort you to the next town this is it, you’re staying here, I’m going on.”
“When did we decide that? Look I can’t stay in one place for too long, if I do they will find me. And as far as traveling with you, you’re the only one I’ve found worthy of my company. That and you seem to have a knack for disappearing, Soujiro Seta a wanted man that this country’s own government can’t find.” Selena said the last part with a small laugh.
“You know who I was the whole time? How?”
Selena smile at his very confused face then pulled out from the sleeve of her kimono a few folded pieces of paper. It was a wanted poster with a drawing of his face. He had seen it before on roadside signposts and in a few of the medium sized towns he had been to, every time he had torn it down, he didn’t need the attention. Selena smile and laughed a little at his new blow away look.
“Ok truth, I keep these with me just in case I run into some one like you. It’s an easy way of making money, considering most of these guys don’t stand a chance in hell of beating me. And telling you this means, I don’t want to turn you in so you’re off the hook, however I will tell you I was think about it when you first started following me. Also, I don’t know why I change my mind so don’t ask, I just did.”
Soujiro smile at this, then said. “Well now I am curious, if you hunt down and catch wanted men, what is your fighting style? But more importantly, no.”
“No?”
“Yes, no, you’re not coming with me.”
“What? Don’t you think you can tell me what to do, Soujiro Seta. That and you should know something about me, once I set my mind to something, nothing stops me. So you might as well get use to the fact I’m traveling with you, because where ever you go I will follow.”
“But I don’t even know where I’m going.”
“Prefect, we wonder randomly and it will make it all the more difficult for anyone to find me. That is such a wonderful idea, good thinking Soujiro.”
Soujiro was completely speechless never had anyone been this determined to be near him, in fact most people he had been around had only want to get away from him or use him. However, Selena didn’t want that, she seemed to only want to be near him. Never had anyone acted like this with him and his brain was working in overdrive trying to come up with a reason. What made this girl so different from everyone else? Just as he thought his brain was going to exploded, a delicious smell began to dance right under his nose. Looking down he saw their food have arrived and Selena was offering him a piece. He picked up his own chopsticks and began to eat. Selena smile at him then nodded to a bottle of sake and two sake-cups (the little tiny cups). “I went ahead and paid along with ordering us some sake, to drink to our new traveling arrangements.”
She carefully poured him a cup then herself setting the bottle down she raised her cup and waited for him, he nodded his head and then raised his cup and they drank. Then continued eating, as they did Soujiro didn’t know what to feel. So many emotions were rolling around inside him, the feelings he got when watching her pour his drink, the need she seem to have about being near him, her beauty, grace, her want to help him and even protect him. Things he had never known and something deep inside him wanted never to go with out them again, never to go without her again.
