Prologue

Megumi Takani sat in her bedroom cradling the eight lifelike little dolls in her arms, each no bigger than her own delicate hands. She considered what she now had at her disposal, after long hours of stitching, chanting and preparation, and her fox ears popped up with the temptation of mischief.

She giggled to herself. Three weeks ago she was called out to treat a sick patient who no other doctor would go near. The receiver of her care happened to be a traveller from a distant land, which unsurprisingly Megumi had never heard of.

However, when Megumi went to leave, the sick man had called out to her.

"O beautiful doctor, you've helped me so much when no one else would! Please, take this!" And he threw to her a wrapped bundle.

"No payment is necessary." She replied, "I didn't do much at all."

"Then don't consider it payment. Consider it a gift." He responded and he smiled at her in such a way she could not refuse. She bowed to him in thanks and left.

When she got home, she unwrapped it to find a picture book. Looking through, it seemed it was instructions at first on how to make dolls but by the end the cunning woman had figured something else also. These dolls could be fashioned to looking like real people and then magically manipulate the doings of their counterparts.

Now, looking at her finished fabric offspring, Megumi began to conceive wicked thoughts on what she could do with them. There was a doll for her, and one for Sir Ken, naturally. There was one for Miss Kaoru, and that brat Yahiko and the Rooster head too. She created one for Hajime Saito and for Aoshi Shinomori, out of pure spite, and one for the girl Misao, because she had material left over. From what she could tell, everything was set.
