THUD! “...Shishio! No moorre... ssttop... Oh, God, please, s-stop... p-please...”
“Shut-up, you fucking bitch! Just shut-the-hell up. I know you did something... I know you called him... I can smell it on you. You stink like a fucking traitor... what did you tell him, Yumi? Eh? What the fuck did you tell him? Did you tell him where we are? Did you tell him where the next pick-up is going to be? Did you? Tell me what you told him, bitch, or I’m slitting your throat... TELL ME!”
“I-I didn’t c-call anybody, baby... I swear to God...”
SLLAPP!
“DON’T LIE TO ME!”
“...I’m n-not... I-I l-love you... w-why would I l-lie to you?”
“Then what took you so fucking long if you didn’t call him, baby-doll? Tell me that? Did you roll those cigarettes yourself? Eh? Or did you have to go all the way to Scottland and shear a few sheep to make those fucking pussy-plugs? What kept you, girl? And this better be good.”
“Th-they were o-out of G-GPC’s at the c-coun-ter... the girl h-had to g-go in-to the back and f-find the new car-tons... I know h-how much you l-like your GPC’s... she g-got them for m-me special... I swear, Shishio... it’s the t-truth, baby...I s-swear it is.”
“You were late waiting for MY cigarettes? Isn’t that convenient?”
“I-it wasn’t convenient...”
“I don’t believe you, Yumi...you stink like one of Hawke’s little wolf pups. I can smell him all over you... you better hope I’m wrong, or else their gonna find you floating in Manhattan Bay with an extra smile under your chin.”
“I’m n-not lying... I love y-you... I wouldn’t betray you.”
“For your sake, I hope you’re telling the truth. Now go wash your face off... there’s blood and make-up all over it. You’re a mess. I don’t want Osui or any of the others to see you looking like this, alright?”
“Yeah, sure... baby. I’ll find m-my dark glasses.”
“Yeah, good plan... and leave your hair loose. That’ll help too.”
The door closed with a sharp ‘click’ as he left the room, and Yumi sank to the floor, her hands covering her bruised and bloodied face as silent sobs wrenched through her slender frame. She clamped a hand over her mouth, capturing any sound that may have passed, ensuring that no one would hear her-especially Shishio. God only knew what he would do if he found out how close to breaking her he actually came... how close to killing her he really was. Her stomach roiled and Yumi surged to her feet, racing to the bathroom where she emptied the contents of her gut into the toilet.
Shivering with shock and fear, she wasn’t sure how much longer she would be able to hang on. She told herself she was willing to follow Shishio into hell as long as she knew he loved her, or at least cared about her, but now, she wasn’t so sure if the trade off was worth it. What just happened proved that love or not, he was more than capable of killing her, and his level of regret would be minimal.
Yumi made a choice and flushed the toilet.
She had to find a way to get out, and she was going to have to find it soon. She doubted Shisho would let her leave the Motel alone again. He was too paranoid now, so she would have to try and find a way to make another phone call... alone. She would call Mr. Shinomori... he would be able to get her out. The police would make a mess of everything trying to rescue her and capture Shishio at the same time, and she would probably end up dead. Mr. Shinomori could do it without Shishio knowing anything.
She had to find a way to call Hawke again. He would come for her... he never left anyone behind...not even pups who fell away from the pack and lost their way. He tried to save everybody.
“Livingston.”
“Ah, Detective Livingston, I have Mike Rivers on line two for you.”
“Thank-you, Raychal.” Daniel leaned over and punched the flashing button on his phone. “Hey, Mike. You got good news for me, Buddy?”
“I hope so,” the voice on the other end of the line was deep and colored with a heavy Australian accent. “I got your phone trace.”
“Excellent! Where did it come from?”
“A payphone in Manhattan...”
“Manhattan?”
“Aye, on the east side... one of those HandiMart stores. Sets on the corner of 17th an’ Haukley.”
“Um-hum... there’s a couple of pay-by-the-week motels in that area, isn’t there.”
“There are... I looked ‘em up for ya.” Paper shuffled, and Mike came back on the line. “There’s the Blue Palace, the Manhattan Skyline, the Eastern Spice, an’ a lit’ol dive called the Feathered Boa.”
“Sounds like a winner to me.” Daniel chuckled as he wrote the names down on a pad of paper. “How close are these places to our HandiMart?”
“Round about a three block radius. The Feathered Boa’s the closest. It’s only about a block away, it also happens to be the cheapest... bloody full of cockroaches an’ ants, or so I’ve heard. Great place to stay, eh Mate?”
“Yeah, Great.” Both men laughed. “Thanks, Mike. This is a lot of help. Did Mr. Shinomori get his phone back?”
“Aye... that big footed albatross o’ his dropped by an’ picked it up this mornin’.”
“Good enough. I’ll be in touch. Let me know if you find anything else out, will ya?”
“Sure thing, Daniel.” The line went dead as Mike hung up his phone.
“17th and Haukley.” Daniel shook his head, scratching the stubble on his chin. “What a shitty neighborhood.” He stood up and grabbed his jacket. “Hey, Fletcher...” he yelled at his rookie partner. “Get off your ass, kid. We got a new lead in the Shinomori case.”
“Excellent!” The young detective swallowed what was left of his sandwich whole and pulled his coat off the back of his chair. “Where we going?”
“Downtown ‘Shang-gri-lah’, Rookie.” Daniel laughed, winking at the confused look his words caused on the other officer’s face.
“Somehow, I don’t think I’m gonna like this much... am I?”
“What makes you say that, Fletch?” Daniel asked, as they headed down the stairs from the second floor of the precinct and walked out the front doors. “I thought you wanted to make detective because riding the beat was too boring?”
“Weelll, yeah... but the way you said that, it just makes me think this isn’t going to be punch and cookies. Right?”
“Smart kid.”
“So, where we going?” Fletcher asked, as they climbed into their unmarked police car. “Ghetto central?”
“Close, how about skid-row, Manhattan style?”
“Ah, shit! I knew I wasn’t going to like this.”
Daniel grinned, and pulled out into traffic. “You had all your shots, kid? I don’t want you catching something incurable on me while we’re over there...”
“Very funny.” Fletcher rolled his eyes. “Just drive the fucking car, will ya. I’ll see if I got any bug spray and roach repellant in my pockets.”
“But spray? Roach repellant?” Daniel hooted. “Didn’t they tell you before you transferred over here from Central, that canned crap don’t work on our bugs... you need a shotgun for these beauties. If you aren’t careful, they’ll eat ya whole when you aren’t looking.”
“Great, just great.” Fletcher stared out the front window. “That’s all I need... giant bugs.”
“Should go great with the axe murderers, rapists, and psychos... adds a little more color.”
“You’re a sick man, Livingston. You know that?” Fletcher rolled the window down and spit on the passing pavement. “You’re a sick, sick man.”
Nothing ever seemed as bad in the morning as it did when the sky was dark, and as Misao plucked the lock on the bathroom door open and peered around the frame, a rush of guilt flattened her up against the wall. There was Kenshin, sitting on the floor, propped up in the corner of the hallway next to the door, his head and shoulders leaning at odd angles against the wall, sound asleep. The dark circles under his eyes said that he hadn’t really gotten much rest, and she felt even worse about that. He’d coaxed her for ages to open the door and let him in, but she kept saying no. She didn’t want him to see what a wreck she was-to see the flood of tears washing down her face, or the desperation in her eyes. She hated for anybody to know she had weaknesses. It gave them too much power over her, and this guy already had enough of that, yet...
She opened the door and slipped out into the hallway. Kneeling next to him, she brushed the tangled strands of red silk out of his face and cupped his cheek. She had never seen him fully asleep and relaxed before, and despite the worry lines along his forehead, she couldn’t help but notice how fine and almost delicate his features were. If he didn’t have that awful scar, they could just about pass for feminine. That brought half a smile to her face as considered what he would say to her if she told him he looked like a girl. Something smartass and threatening, she’d bet.
A long sigh slipped over her lips and she leaned into him, resting her forehead against the smooth warmth of his. What was she going to do? Her thumb idly caressed his cheekbone while her free hand rose to lay flat across his bare chest. He made her absolutely crazy with his sarcasm and analytical logic, but being close to him was like having her insides turned into a volcano. When he touched her, she could hardly put two rational words or thoughts together. All she could think about was crawling inside his skin... and having him crawl into hers. The idea of having him gone left her feeling sick and cold, and she wanted to cry again.
“Oh Kenshin,” she whispered, sliding her cheek along his on her way to laying her head on his shoulder. “I don’t know what to do. I’m so scared... so fucking scared. I just found you, I don’t know what I’ll do if I lose you... I... Oh God....” Her voice caught and she clamped her mouth and her eyes shut tight, willing the tears that were threatening not to come. She cried all night. She didn’t want to cry anymore.
“You could try having a little more faith in me, little girl.”
The rough, tired voice startled her, but when she tried to pull away, Kenshin’s arms wrapped around her and held her snug against him. A deep sigh left his chest and he buried his face in her nape. “Don’t even think about it,” he growled, low in his throat. “I just spent the better half of the night trying to get you to open this bloody door so I could hold you. Don’t even think I’m gonna let go of you now that I’ve finally got my arms around you, because it isn’t going to happen. Understand?”
“Kenshin,” she squeaked, and turned stiff for a moment, and then sagged against his chest, her arms wrapping around his body like a vice, the tears she was trying to hold back pouring down her face. “Baby, I’m sorry.” She whimpered, turning her head to bury her nose in his throat. “I’m just... I... God, I’m so scared.” She cried.
“I know, I know.” He said, tenderly stroking her hair and rocking her back and forth, his cheek pressed against the top of her head. “I’m not going to tell you I’m not scared, ‘cause that would be a lie, but...” He gently pulled her back so he could look down into her wet face. “I’m not an easy target either, Misao. Aoshi and me, we’ve been around the block a few times. We know what’s coming our way here, and we’re not stupid, so you’re just going to have to trust me and believe in me on this one. I need you to. Can you do that?”
“I-I don’t know.” Her hand caressed his face, her fingers sliding over his lips. “This has all happened so fast, my head is swimming. I... I think I... I...” Misao stopped, and looked away, her hand falling back to his chest.
“You think what?” He asked, sitting up and cupping her chin to pull her back. “Tell me what you were going to say, Misao.” His violet eyes searched her face. “Please.”
“I-I can’t.” She shook her head. “It’s like I said. This is all happening too fast. I hardly know anything about you... I just met you, for God’s sake... and now... now some drug running manic wants to kill you.” Her eyes were huge in her small face when she looked at him. “I can’t keep up.”
“Yes, you can.” He rose a little unsteady to his feet and then pulled her up. “Now, tell me what you were going to say.”
“No,” she shook her head, turning away from him and walking toward the bedroom. “You wouldn’t understand.”
“Maybe I would.” He followed her and shut the door behind him. “Give me a chance, Misao. You’re always thinking you know what I’m going to do or say or think... and so far, you’ve been dead wrong.” Kenshin watched her sit on the foot of the bed and he joined her, carefully taking her hands inside of his. They were so cold. “Now, just for once, give me a chance... please.”
Misao looked down at their entwined hands; he wasn’t a large man, but his hands were still bigger than hers. It was funny, no matter what she did or what she thought, he just kept on surprising her. Maybe he was right. Maybe she should give him a chance.
“Will you promise me something before I tell you?”
“Maybe,” he said. “Depends on what it is.”
“Will you promise you won’t leave?”
He was silent for a moment. “You’re still worried about that?” He asked, discouraged. “What do I have to do...”
“Just answer the question, Kenshin.”
“Yes, I promise I won’t leave.” He sighed. “Now, tell me.”
“Alright.” Misao drew in a deep breath, tried to steady her jumping nerves, and then looked him in the eye. “The reason all of this is so hard and I’m so scared is because...” She paused, and swallowed. “Because I think I love you.” She watched his face go completely blank, his eyes blink, and then his mouth dropped open. Her admission had rendered him utterly speechless.
“I...” He coughed and then swallowed. “You love me?”
“I don’t know,” she shook her head and pulled her hands free, feeling very uncomfortable with him now. “I know we’ve only seen each other three times, and the first one doesn’t really count because we hated each other, but... I... I can’t explain it. I... I just... I just have these feelings for you, and thinking about you dead is more than I can take.” The quaver in her voice made her stop talking again, and she pointedly refused to meet his eyes.
“Misao?” His hand was gentle on her shoulder as he tried to get her to look up. “Misao, honey? Look at me.”
“No,” she said. “I really can’t.”
“Please,” he reached around her and cupped her chin, tugging tenderly. “I really need you to look at me.”
“No, Kenshin, I can’t. I... I don’t want to see the look on your face.”
“Why not? You afraid?”
“Y-Yes.”
“Of what?”
“You know what.” She jerked her chin out of his grasp and looked the opposite direction.
“Ahh, your ‘Ass’-umeing again.” He sighed. “I really need to find a way to break you of this. I really do.” He shifted his weight on the bed, grabbed her shoulders, and pulled her down on the mattress. Before she hardly had time to scream, he leaned over and pinned her with his upper body. “Now then,” he looked into the storm of her green-blue gaze. “We are going to talk about this, whether you like it or not.”
“Kenshin... please, don’t...” Her eyes were glassy, and her lower lip trembled. She hated feeling like this. In all her life, no one ever had the power to do this to her-no one but him. “Don’t do this to me.”
“What am I doing, Honey?” He asked, picking the hair out of her eyes and tucking it behind her ear. “What am I doing besides making you face what scares you the most? Me?” He leaned down and nuzzled her damp cheek, letting his lips kiss a tender trail to her mouth. “I want you to do something for me, Misao.”
“What?”
“I want you to think back to the other night when I was here.” Gently he started to wipe some of the tears off her face. “I want you to remember something you said to me about wishing you could have someone who would love you like Hawke loves Kay...do you remember that?”
“Yes.” She looked up into his face and bit her lip. He was stone serious. She had never seen this look before.
“Do you remember what I told you?”
“I... no.”
“I told you to be careful what you wished for, you might get it.” He locked eyes with her and waited.
Misao’s head was spinning and her brain felt like it was on overload. Was he saying what she thought he was saying? “Y-you... love me?”
“I tried to tell you last night... well, sort of.” He brushed his lips over hers. “In my own lamebrain sort of way. I meant what I said. I’m yours, if you want me... you’ve been the one woman I haven’t been able to get off my mind no matter what I do. I can’t meditate you out, I can’t spar with my students and concentrate you out... you stay right there. Hell,” he dropped his head down and rested it against the softness of her breasts. “You follow me into my dreams, girlfriend. The only other woman to ever do that was my ex, and those weren’t happy dreams. The dreams I have about you, well... let’s just say they aren’t rated PG-13.” Raising up, he gazed tenderly down into her stunned face. “Whether it’s love or not, I don’t know. I don’t think I’ve ever been in love before, not like this. But I do know one thing for certain, I can’t stay away; I can’t keep my hands off you... and I don’t want to. So, make of that what you will, Misao. But before you start jumping to assumptions, you might want to consider this.”
“What?” She asked, touching his face with trembling fingers.
“I’ve been here all night... spent half of it freezing on the floor outside your bathroom, listening to you cry and wanting to hold you so bad... If I didn’t care about you more than just the sex thing, do you think I would have stayed?”
“No,” she threaded her fingers into the thick red hair on the back of his head. “Does that mean you plan on being around longer than four fucking weeks?”
“Definitely.”
She pulled him down close to her lips. “Four fucking months?”
“Absolutely.”
Her tongue touched the line of his bottom teeth and he sucked in his breath. “Four fucking years?”
“Precisely.” He rolled on top of her, pulled her robe open, and pressed her into the softness of the mattress with his weight. “I think you’ve finally gotten the idea.” He murmured against her lips. “Can we do something else now?” He asked. “I hate talking...”
“Could have fooled me, Himura.” Misao sucked his tongue into her mouth and wrapped her legs around his waist. “You’ve been doing it nonstop since you woke up.”
“Shut-up, you mouthy bitch.” He growled, yanking his hakama off and palming her ass. “I may have admitted my feelings for you, but that doesn’t mean you still get to be disrespectful.”
“Yes it does,” she snarled back as he rammed his cock deep inside of her. “AHHHHH!” Her body arched up and she dug her nails into his shoulders. “I... can... still...do... any-thing... I ... want...”
“Really?” He grabbed her hands and pinned them to the mattress. “We’ll see about that.” Then he dipped down and pulled one of her nipples roughly into his mouth, sucking it hard and biting it until she screamed and bucked wildly beneath him. Kenshin laved the throbbing peak with his tongue and sucked it again, more gently this time, but just as insistent. Misao thought she was going to lose what sanity she still possessed as her first orgasm broke and shattered over her.
“Naaaahhhh! Kenshin!”
He released her hands and grabbed her ass, slamming hard and fast into her body, riding the contractions of her climax as it shuddered through her muscles. Then he pulled back onto his haunches and lifted her hips up off the bed. Her body was flushed and hot to his touch, her sex wet and slippery. Looking down, Kenshin could see the full length of his cock sliding in and out of Misao’s slit, the taut flesh slick with her cum. The erotica of the vision was more than he could handle, and he gripped her waist, holding her up against him as he began a fast, deep thrusting rhythm that would bring him to his own finish.
“Oh God!” Misao could feel Kenshin pounding deep inside of her. He was pushing inside her cervix again and the pain/pressure was sending her over the edge of a pleasure peak she had only visited once before... with him. In all the years since she started having sex, Misao never knew it could be like this. She never knew it could be so all consuming that your brain shut off and your body took over to the point you became nothing more than muscles, nerves, and instincts. It was primitive. It was insanity. It was the closest thing to perfection she could think of, and she never wanted it to stop.
“KENSHHIINN!”
The phone rang and Aoshi rolled over to pick it up. “Yeah?” He scratched his head and rubbed his eyes. “Yes, that’s how I answer my phone in the morning...” he grinned, and swung his legs over the edge of the bed. “Where the hell are you... or do I want to know?” Laughter echoed on the other end of the receiver and he chuckled. “Well, at least you’re in a good mood.” He said. “Hey, did you get my message?” He waited, listening and then nodded. “Good, so where do you want to meet? Here? Alright, that works. When can you and the wild animal be here?” His eyes darted to the clock on the bedside table and then he turned around and considered the lump of blankets behind him. “Better make it an hour and a half. Sleeping beauty isn’t even awake yet. Gimme a little while to get her moving, will you?” Aoshi smiled, leaned over and pulled the edge of the sheet away from Kaoru’s face. “She’s not usually quite human until she’s at least had a shower and a cup of coffee.... Hey, that’s my girl your talking about, dog-boy. Watch it.” More laughter trickled through the handset and Aoshi shook his head. “Yeah, yeah, whatever. Stuff a sock in it, wise-ass, and I’ll see you in a few.”
Aoshi laughed softly as he hung up the phone, then he rolled back onto the bed and slipped back under the covers to snuggle up to the warmth of his girlfriend. Memories of the night before fluttered through his mind. He’d done it. He told her he loved her. There was no turning back or trying to deny it now. It was out. His heart and soul were on the table and the next move was her’s, but for whatever reason, he wasn’t as afraid or nervous about it as he thought he would be. Strange, he thought. Shouldn’t I be worried?
‘This isn’t Becca...’
The words echoed in his mind, and he closed his eyes. No, this wasn’t Becca. This was Kaoru, and nothing with her was the same. He reached out gently and kissed her awake. She moaned low and soft in her throat, rolling onto her back, letting him nuzzle into the canyon between her ample breasts.
“Hmmm, you’re warm,” he murmured against her skin. “How do you feel?”
“I don’t know,” she mumbled, threading her fingers through his thick hair, pulling him closer. “You tell me... how do I feel?”
He chuckled and raised up to gaze down into her heavy lidded eyes. “Pretty good to me, Angel, but then, I’m biased. I always think you feel good when your naked.”
“Horney old wolf,” she quipped with a sultry grin. “I’ll bet you say that to all the girls...”
“Not hardly, you mouthy minx.” He growled, nipping her lower lip and pulling her fully under his body. “Only the ones brave enough to venture inside my den...”
“...and live to tell the tale?” Laughter erupted between them for a brief moment, and then he covered her mouth and filled the room with the sound of silence. There was time... Kenshin and Misao wouldn’t be there for more than an hour.
There was more than enough time.
