Chapter 2 Ruffians

The thunder of hooves was clearly audible to the people in the center of the village; a cloud of dust shown in the distance. The students of the Kempo School were busy practicing when they heard the commotion outside.

Masuyo Sensei slid open the doors and looked out. The townspeople watched as a herd of horses came to a stop in the middle of their small village. All the students at the dojo were eager to see what was going on. They tried to peak past Masuyo Sensei, but “Stay inside children.” He instructed as he stepped out and slid the door closed.

The older students stood with their ears to the door listening hard. While the two smallest students snuck out back and around the dojo. Only a small tuft of green hair was visible from around the corner of the dojo’s porch. “Takara, we are going to get in big trouble!” One of the youngsters, a young boy with spiky brown hair moaned.

“Shut up Kazuki! Do you want us to get caught?” Takara snapped to her best friend.

“No but,”

“Shhh!” She silenced him. Takara wanted to know what was going on. Horses were a rare sight in any part of Japan; thusly it was a big deal when a whole herd came to town.

The dust finally settled and Takara could see the horses’ riders. They were a large group of scraggly looking men. They were covered in dust and looked as if they needed a shave. Each of them housed a weapon of some fashion, badly hidden beneath their clothes. A group of them dismounted and ignoring the stares of the townspeople sauntered into what passed for the local tavern.

“Who do you think they are?” Kazuki questioned.

“I don’t know. They look kinda dangerous.” Takara replied. She wanted to take a step closer, but as she did a loud crash was heard from the tavern.

The crash was followed by more ruckus. Suddenly two men flew out of the tavern onto their heads. They scurried to their feet and turned to face their assailants. One of the scruffy looking strangers stepped out of the tavern and said something to the men which Takara could not hear. The stranger then lunged forward and stabbed both men.

Masuyo Sensei was appalled and a few townspeople gasped and screamed. Takara’s eyes grew wide in amazement. A few of the other men stepped out and looked around at the gaping group of villagers. They all wore evil looking smirks and stared at the people like a pack of wolves would their prey. Masuyo Sensei charged forward. “Hold it!” Takara stared on as her teacher slowly approached the group of ruffians.

“What do you want Gramps?” The one who had stabbed the men growled.

“We don’t want any trouble here. I would appreciate it if you gentlemen would just leave our village be.”

Takara smiled. That was her Sensei. He was a kind man who spoke with a firm yet calm voice, but never forced his ways on anyone. He may have looked the part of a harmless old man, but he was the strongest and wisest man she knew. The students inside had now slid the door open a crack to see. Takara and Kazuki stuck their heads out farther to see.

“What was that?” One of the men asked irritated.

“I think he wants us to leave boss.” One of them commented in a slur.

The one he had addressed as boss stepped forward. He had a large mass of messy black hair. He was a man of large stature and an intimidating facade. He wore a large bow staff across his back. He gave a greasy smirk and stepped closer until he was face to face with Masuyo. “Is that right old man?” He asked venomously.

Masuyo didn’t flinch. His expression was that of a stone. “I don’t like violence.” He replied in a hard voice.

The man leaned back and laughed. “Hear that boys? The old man doesn’t like violence.” The others laughed haughtily in reply.

Takara was becoming increasingly annoyed with their rude behavior. Without any warning she stomped forward and rolled up her sleeves. “How rude?” Kazuki said not realizing she was gone. He turned his head and saw her stomping into a bad situation. “Takara!” He said in a whisper. The older kids in the dojo saw her coming and slid the door open all the way. “Takara!” They pleaded for her to get back.

“Who do you think you are!?” She shouted when she reached Masuyo.

He looked down a twinge of fear appearing in his countenance. The men stopped laughing and stared at her. The leader knelt down and smiled at her. “Looky here boys! A sweet little girl has come to challenge us.” There were a few chuckles from the men until she threw them an evil glare. She turned her gave back to the leader.

“Get out!” She demanded, never losing her stare.

The leader’s smile immediately turned to a frown. He stood up and glared down at her. He closed his eyes and took a deep breath then in a flash snatched her up by the collar of her gi. Her stare never wavered as he held her inches from his face with an evil look on his face. “No one tells me what to do!” He growled in her face.

Masuyo jumped in and glared at the man. “Put her down!” He shouted. The man looked at Masuyo then back at Takara. He threw her aside like so much garbage. She hit the ground and angrily shoved her way back up. Before she could attack the leader turned on Masuyo sensei. He swung a punch and Masuyo blocked.

“Sensei, look out!” Kazuki yelled.

One of the other strangers had a bokken. He hit Masuyo in the head and the old master tumbled to the ground. Takara gasped. The other students came rushing out of the dojo to their teacher’s rescue, but Masuyo was still conscious, “Stop!” He shouted to them. “Stay back!” He commanded. Kazuki ran up and grabbed Takara’s arm and pulled her back a little. Her face didn’t show it, but Kazuki could sense she was scared when she clutched his arm tightly.

The leader stared down at Masuyo. “You should teach your students some respect!” He snapped. His arm flew up in a seemingly meaning less gesture, but as it did all the men broke out and began breaking into all the houses around. They broke all kinds of thing, and stole all valuables they could find; anyone who got in their way was beaten or killed. They set fire to a few stores.

The martial artists could do nothing but watch as their town was ransacked. It all seemed to happen in an instant. Takara never budged from her spot, frozen in shock and fear. The strangers, after having destroyed most of the houses on the street got back on their horses. The leader looked down at Masuyo. “We’ll be back and you will die!” he shouted. With that they rode off the same way they had come.

When the dust cleared all the students ran to the aid of their sensei. The older boys helped him up and led him to the dojo porch. “What now sensei?” One of them asked. Masuyo shook his aching head. “I don’t know. I just don’t know.” He replied. The boys all frowned sadly at one another. Takara felt responsible and she hung her head sadly as the group of students huddled around their master looking for answers to an impossible question.
