Chapter 10 Suspicion

Kenshin sat out on the porch nervously tapping his fingers as the sun peeked over the dojo fence. He had never felt so paranoid in all his life. He had stayed in the same place for two hours staring at the gate, waiting, praying, Takara would come back.

Kaoru sighed as she watched his tense vigil. She knew he and Takara had gotten into an argument, but she was deprived of the details. “Where do you think Takara is right now?” Yahiko voiced his question, sadly from the table.

“I don’t know, Yahiko. I just don’t know.” Kaoru whispered staring helplessly at the morning sky for guidance.

Meanwhile Takara awoke when a ray of the same sunlight shown through the cracks of Sano’s door onto her face. She curled closer into his arms in a vain effort to escape it. Sano stretched out one arm and yawned when he felt her movement. He smiled down at her. Her emerald locks trailing all down his chest and disheveled from a restless sleep. Her tan hands holding onto him for dear life. He pushed some hair from her face. “Ohayo gozaimasu, sleepy head.” He crooned.

She squirmed and moaned. “Please Sano five more minutes.” He let out a low chuckle as he reached his fingers under her hair to tickle her neck. She twitched and swatted his hand away. He continued to tickle her, until she jumped up and tickled him back. Takara was slowly losing the tickle fight to a fit of uncontrollable laughter. “No fair!” She shouted in her shrieking giggle fit. Sano finally stopped and stared down at her as she caught her breath. Her smile was absolutely radiant, the rarest of all things he had ever seen in his life, but still the most beautiful.

She caught his eye as her laughter subsided. She held his stare and found herself admiring his intense brown eyes. He was leaning over her, and they were in a seemingly awkward position. The intensity of his eyes and the comforting presence his smile invoked hypnotized her and she pushed herself up on her elbows to reach his lips. She caught them gently and nibbled on his bottom lip before blessing him with several tender kisses.

He too was mesmerized by her presence and was numbly accepting her kisses and trying to return them in a daze. He felt her hands rise up to massage his chest and he had to use all his will power not to pull her into his arms and show her all the passion that was building within him. He knew she wanted to go slow, but she wasn’t acting it so it was up to him to play referee. He pulled back and looked at her seriously; which was very difficult. “Takara….I can’t…I” He couldn’t finish with Takara’s hand clasped gently over his mouth.

She smiled gently at him, “I know, we should go slow, you’re right. Thank you.”

He sighed in relief and sat up. He scratched his head absently and looked over at her. She pulled her hair back and shook it out, silently wishing for a brush. “So what will you do now?” Sano asked.

She took a deep breath in and sighed. She shook her head and stood up. “Well I suppose I should go say something to my brother, don’t you?” Sano stood up and grabbed his shirt.

“Yeah.” He replied. So Takara picked up her weapons and the two walked leisurely back to the dojo.

Kenshin sat his anger growing with every passing moment; his hope that she would return fading to the inevitable facts. Suddenly the gate creaked open and Sano and Takara strolled through it. Kenshin jumped up only to have Kaoru bounce past him.

“Oh, Takara there you are! We were so worried!” Kaoru grabbed both Takara’s hands in a sincere gesture.

Takara was taken aback by her kindness. She had expected Kaoru to be disgusted after finding out she was the infamous Katana, but it was though nothing had changed. She relaxed; Kaoru was always such a good friend to her. “I’m alright. Sano took care of me.”

Takara smiled up at her tall hero and Sano smirked knowingly. Kenshin saw the whole thing and was immediately suspicious. He shrugged it off as Sano was a good friend. “Thank you for bringing her back Sano.” He spoke up coldly.

Takara’s smile faded when she heard her brother. “He didn’t bring me back I came with a proposition.” She raised her head with a confident heir staring him down.

“What kind of proposition?” He asked softening a little.

“If we go to Kyoto separately we’ll only be in each other’s way later. If we go together we’ll have a better chance at getting Shishio and the Shinsengumi.” Takara said casually with a hand on her hip.

Kenshin just stared at the ground while he pondered her suggestion. There was a long silence before he answered. “On one condition.”

His eyes were intense as they rose to lock hers. She trembled at their seriousness. She felt uneasy for a moment, but wouldn’t let Kenshin see. She’d always been stubborn and she wasn’t about to stop now; not because her big brother said so. “Name it.”

“No killing.” Sano felt the air thicken with tension at Kenshin’s words. Takara glanced at the ground then at her brother. Sano could see the intensity was the same in the eyes of both siblings. “Not even in self defense?” Takara responded mockingly with a scowl.

“You shouldn’t have to kill to protect yourself, knocking someone out works just as well.” Kenshin replied sounding slightly annoyed.

All Takara’s muscles seemed to tighten and then relax all at once. “Fine.” She spat.

“Fine we leave tomorrow at sunrise.” With that Kenshin turned and swiftly entered the dojo. Kaoru followed as she wanted to know what was going on and she didn’t want Kenshin to leave. Sano and Takara were left in the courtyard alone.

“You will come with us?” Takara turned to look up at Sano. She grabbed his hand and held it as she stared at him. Sano could see the softness return to her eyes. He smiled.

“You bet. I wouldn’t let you and Kenshin have all the fun.” He ran his hand along her chin.

She chuckled. “Good cause I don’t think I could bear to be alone with him.” She tilted her head towards the dojo.

The next day at sunrise the three of them slipped away from Tokyo, south towards Kyoto. Kaoru and Yahiko had obviously wanted to come, but Kenshin had pleaded that they stay in Tokyo, where it was safe. Kaoru had only agreed when Kenshin promised he would return.

They walked in silence most of the time. Sano walked between them. Kenshin kept an eye on the two of them as they walked. He knew something was different between them by the way they smiled at each other. It was strange, she had been furious at Sano two days ago and now she was glowing. He trusted Sano, but he couldn’t help but feel something was unusual. “So where did you go the other night?” Kenshin asked nonchalantly.

Takara turned her head away from him. “Not that it’s any of your business, but I stayed with Sano.” Sano seemed to become visibly more nervous.

Kenshin’s eyes widened a little. “Is this true Sano?”

“Well…” Sano started nervously when Takara interrupted. She loved a chance to irk her brother. “Yes and we had a great time.” She smiled devilishly grabbing Sano’s arm and leaning her head on him. Sano swallowed. Some how excited by her touch and terrified by Kenshin’s gaze.

Kenshin stopped abruptly and closed his eyes. He turned and looked at Sano. “May I speak to you in private Sano.”

“Sure.” Sano replied. The two men walked a few feet away leaving Takara standing alone smiling at her antics.

“I hope you did not do anything that would disgrace my sister, Sano.” Kenshin questioned calmly.

“No way Kenshin.” Sano said in defense. “Nothing happened, we just…” Kenshin raised an eyebrow. “We kissed…” Kenshin raised both eyebrows. “A lot.”

Kenshin still looked skeptical. “I swear, nothing more than that!” Sano said desperately. Kenshin sighed and nodded. He started back towards the path. “Do you believe me?”

He stopped and turned back to his friend. “I do, but do me a favor Sano don’t trifle with her emotions.” He warned.

Sano nodded. “I won’t, I promise.” That night they were camped and Takara was starting to fall asleep when Sano shook her arm.

“What the hell, Sano I was almost asleep?” She said annoyed.

“Can we talk?” He whispered motioning to a tree not far off, where hopefully Kenshin wouldn’t hear them. She nodded reluctantly and followed him. They thought Kenshin was asleep, but once they had reached the tree he sat up and watched them. He wanted to keep close tabs on them, but didn’t wish to invade their privacy.

“Are you trying to get me killed?” Sano asked.

“What do you mean?” She said dumbfounded at his accusation. She leaned up against a tree and he leaned his arm above her head to look down at her.

“Your brother seems to think I’ve taken advantage of you. Your little comment today didn’t help any, and if you don’t mind I would like to keep my body in tacked.”

Takara smiled playfully. “Oh come on. A big strong guy like you afraid of a scrawny guy like my brother?”

“Scrawny yes, but you haven’t seen what he can do with that sword.”

“Whatever. I’ll protect you.” She smiled grabbing his jacket and tugging on it. He leaned down closer to her face and smirked. She kissed him and he kissed back. It was a tender kiss, a trade mark of young and true love.

“Don’t worry about him, hopefully he’ll soon figure out I’m old enough to take care of myself and decide for myself.”

“Alright, I wish you to would make up already. I don’t like adding to the sibling rivalry.”

“I don’t think it’s you at all. We’re just too different.” Takara sighed sadly looking at the ground. “Maybe if we had grown up the same…”

Sano lifted her chin and stared into her eyes. “Don’t live in the past, let’s think about now.”

“About us.” She whispered leaning into him. Her hands clutched his waist and his arm wrapped around her. Their lips met and the spark of their love glowed so bright Kenshin could see it.

He sighed. “I hope Sano can tame her better than I can.” With that he rolled over and fell asleep. The next day they would arrive in Kyoto and the only thing on any of their minds would be finding the Shinsengumi.
