Chapter 12 The end for you!
Two months passed. Takara assassinated many politicians and businessmen in the name of Shishio Makoto. Every time she killed someone another piece of her died. She was once again hard and ruthless. She was easily becoming one of the Shinsengumi and was slowly gaining Shishio’s trust. He respected her and admired her skills. If Soujuro was his right hand man she was his left hand girl.
Kenshin and the others spent those same months searching for her; unfortunately without Takara’s tracking skills it was hopeless. They were all becoming frustrated. Back in Tokyo; they were all sitting around a table at the dojo. Kenshin and Saitou sat calmly sipping tea. Sano sat in the corner staring at the table in silence. Kaoru and Yahiko were practicing in the dojo.
Finally the tranquility of the room was broken by Sano’s fist pounding into the table. He growled in frustration and stared at his fist and then down at the broken table. “That seemed pointless.” Saitou commented casually.
“How could she do this? How could she join him after all that’s happened?” Sano held his head in his hands sullenly.
Saitou tried to reason. “She’s always been a killer Sano, she always will…”
“No!” Sano snapped jumping up and grabbing Saitou’s shirt. “She’s not a cold blooded killer! She doesn’t kill the innocent!”
“Oh, so those assassinations she pulled in the last two months were for the good of Japan?” Saitou shot acerbically as he wrenched Sano’s hands from his shirt.
“She’s only doing it to protect us! You don’t know what she’s been through!”
“You do!?”
“Yes! I love her!” Sano shouted to end the argument. The statement may have seemed slightly irrelevant, but Sano felt like it needed to be said. There was silence for a few moments before Saitou’s voice came in little more than a whisper.
“You fool. Your emotions will get in the way.”
“What? She’s Kenshin’s sister too, shouldn’t his feelings be compromised!?” Sano shot back.
“Himura is a seasoned samurai and would never allow attachment to get in the way!”
Kenshin remained silent the entire time. He stared at the floor silently contemplating why Takara had done what she did. He could think of no reason. She knew that he was the Battosai and that they could all handle themselves. ‘Why? Why would she do this?’ He thought. Suddenly they encountered the sound of sandals running down the porch. The door flew open and one of Saitou’s informants fell before them. “Sir, we have confirmation that Shishio and the Shinsengumi have returned to Kyoto!”
Kenshin jumped at this news. “For how long?”
“We don’t know. The chief insists you hurry to Kyoto, he thinks that Shishio has something big planned.”
“Let’s go.” Saitou jumped up with Kenshin and Sano not far behind. They grabbed a carriage and off they went towards Kyoto as fast as they could go.
Meanwhile…Shishio was once again going over the plan with one of his business lackeys. Soujuro stood by as usual smiling away like a dog waiting for someone to throw him a bone. Yumi lounged in a chair and watched Shishio’s every move as if in a trance. Takara sat in a dark corner at the other side of the room; polishing her katana. She liked to isolate herself from them as much as possible; not just because they disgusted her, but because it could compromise her plan.
Takara had known what she was doing from the start. She had a master plan and it was slowing coming into its final stages. She had spent the last two months earning the trust of the Shinsengumi and she knew she had succeeded. With their trust none of them would ever suspect her plan to turn on them. Tomorrow night Shishio was planning to burn Kyoto in a flashy anarchist and arsonist political statement. She was put in charge of the outside operations. She would have complete control over all of the Shinsengumi. Once they were disposed of she would cut back, catch Shishio unawares and kill him!
The thought of killing her hated “boss” made her grip tighten on the sword. She knew killing them all wouldn’t repent for all the innocent souls she had killed in the last two months, but she had another plan for that as well.
“Just think Katana, this time tomorrow the Meji government will finally see the error of their ways.” Shishio said. Yumi leaned over and stared deeply into his eyes. “It’ll be wonderful.” She cooed.
“And you helped make it all possible.” Shishio threw her a glance, she turned her head and stared back unmoving. Her face showed no signs of remorse.
“However I can help.” She said simply and went back to polishing. Soujuro watched her closely. He was still sore at her for making him look the fool in front of Shishio. He only trusted her because his master did.
An hour before sunset Takara sat perched upon the high roof top of a building overlooking the alley where she was supposed to be meeting the members of the Shinsengumi. They were all gathering below her at that very moment.
The wind blew by her cheek and her hair flapped in the breeze. She was dressed in a midnight blue uniform with short sleeves and long bottoms. Her hair was held atop her head in a high ponytail. Her hands had gloves without fingers. Her weapons hung from her body.
Her hand rested on the hilt of her sword. She was preparing herself to kill all the Shinsengumi in one fell swoop. In the last two months she had come to know their fighting styles and she knew she could handle them easily. Once they were all gathered in the alley she heard one of them say, “Where is Katana?” On cue, she swooped down from her perch like a hawk on its prey and sliced the owner of the voice in half.
Without so much as a hitch she began to massacre them all. They were confused and off guard and she made quick work of the lot. Finally she stood alone amongst piles of corpses slathered in blood. Her sword was filthy. She pulled the cleaning rag from her belt and ran it over the blade in one swift movement clearing it of blood. Her arms and hair also held stains of blood, yet she took seemingly no notice of them as she sped off, back to Shishio’s hide out.
Sano, Saitou, and Kenshin arrived in Kyoto as the sun began to set the next day. They were met by the Kyoto chief of police. “I’m glad you made it. The Shinsengumi have been parading around this last week picking fights and threatening the Meji government. From all the reports we believe something big is going to happen tonight.”
Kenshin looked at Sano then back at the chief, “Where?”
The chief mumbled, “We don’t know.”
“Great!” Sano growled punching one fist into his open palm.
“Sir!” A short man dressed in the uniform of a police officer ran to the chief with a note in his hand. “We just received this sir!”
The chief took the note and read it to himself. Kenshin watched his eyes enlarge. When he was through he handed it to Kenshin. “Where did you get this?” The chief asked.
Before the man could answer Kenshin read the note, In the alley behind the Kyoto Inn you will find the bodies of most the Shinsengumi.
“It was delivered here by a messenger boy, he said a woman with green hair paid him to bring it here.”
“Takara!” Kenshin and Sano said in unison. All at once they bolted for the Kyoto Inn across town.

The door slid open and Katana slid in. “Katana? What are you doing here?” Shishio asked.
“There’s been a change in plans.” Katana said casually fingering the tip of her sword.
“Where are the others?” Shishio’s business advisor asked.
“I’m afraid they are no longer with us.” She looked up and stared coldly at him. She slowly took her bow and an arrow and began to inspect them. All was silent for a moment, all eyes on her. “Why don’t you join them!” She shouted, unsuspectingly pulling the arrow back in the bow string and releasing. The arrow flew fast and true into the heart of the advisor.
He hit his knees gurgling. Yumi gasped and grabbed onto Shishio. “What do you think you’re doing?” Shishio asked calmly.
She pulled another arrow out and took aim at Shishio. “Stopping you.” She let loose the arrow, but Soujuro caught it in mid air. “I can’t allow you to do that, Katana.” He said cheerfully.
She stood stark still staring at him. She placed her bow and arrows behind her back once more and held up her sword. “Shall we?”
Soujuro drew his blade and stepped forward taking his stance. All was silent for a moment, they both bolted forward at unreal speed.
