Rurouni Kenshin Fan Fiction ❯ The Perfect Life of Kamiya Kaoru ❯ Prologue Part 1 ( Chapter 1 )

[ Y - Young Adult: Not suitable for readers under 16 ]

Hey there! This will be my third attempt at an RK fic and the first one that Im actually going to post. I love Kenshin/Kaoru pairing and I love Battousai/Kaoru even more, although I don't think I write it too well.

Either I make him too much like the rurouni or I make him completely like Hiei from YYH. I'll do my best to find that happy medium and if I get it wrong --- Please read, very important --- LEAVE A REVIEW TELLING ME SO! Thanks in advance ^_^…

Oh, and if you want, you may skip the prologues. I just slipped them in here to provide background information and stress how close Kenshin and Kaoru were. I also needed to show how and why exactly she ended up in an asylum. Proceed…

The Perfect Life of Kamiya Kaoru

Prologue Part 1:

Very few people in life `Have it All' as the saying goes…

Very few people can honestly say they have no qualms with how their life is going; and I don't mean petty worries about overdue library books, annoying siblings, and expensive car payments…

Kamiya Kaoru, however, was one of them.

She had two sisters, a father, a nice house, and her best friend; Himura Kenshin.

They'd known each other practically since birth, but only recently had she realized her huge crush on him. The raven-haired girl was often blind-sighted by this fact to how good she really had it…

“You've got to be the lowest coward ever to disgrace the Earth with your presence, Kaoru!” she murmured to herself angrily from the silence of her bedroom.

She lay sprawled out on her navy blue bed, picking distractedly at a single stray thread on her comforter.

“Kaoru! Come downstairs, Kenshin's here! Ohhohohohoho….” Her older sister Megumi let out a stream of her infamous, coy laughter.

She could often be compared to a fox; clever, but devious. Megumi had been flirting with Kenshin ever since the day Kaoru's crush on him became obvious.

Giving a fleeting glance toward the small mirror on her vanity to check on her hair, 14-year-old Kaoru eagerly bounded downstairs with her math book She was wearing a casual, yellow dress that stopped just above her knees and made her smooth legs appear longer.

Kenshin had offered to tutor her since he had already taken geometry as a sophomore. Kaoru herself was still a freshman, but math was her favorite subject.

There was always a right or wrong answer; there was nothing more complicated about it than memorizing procedures, formulas, and rules. Kaoru had always had the best memory…

She had a way of remembering even the smallest details.

Kenshin, who was three years her senior, smiled uncomfortably in greeting. As usual, the sight of him brought heat to her face, sweat to her palms, and a quickening of the pulse.

The source of Kenshin's discomfort became clear at once. Megumi had wrapped her slender arms artfully around his neck and was pressing her body very close to his, all the while laughing at everything he said as if he were the wittiest person in the world.

If Kaoru had been able to look at them from a dispassionate point of view, she would have had to admit that they made a nice-looking couple even with Megumi's height that was a few inches taller than his.

Megumi had all the beauty and - Kaoru frowned - sex appeal she lacked.

“Don't you have to type up some research paper for school?” Kaoru asked pointedly.

Megumi, although she should be a senior like Kenshin, was already a freshman in college, blazing her way through medical classes and swapping phone numbers with young fraternity members. She had always been the brains of the family.

Megumi smiled teasingly. “Very well, I'll let you have Ken-san back… for now at least. Ohohohohoho….” She glided out of the room leaving an embarrassed silence and both teens blushing to the roots of their hair, in her wake.

Kaoru was still very red as she invited Kenshin to have a seat on the sofa. He had not expected it to be so soft, however, and shifted slightly into her and, quite by accident, laid his hand on her bare leg.

It took him a minute or so to compute what he had done, and Kaoru only took notice when he pulled back his hand hastily, blushing so that his face matched his hair.

Kaoru almost immediately wished that the comforting warmth and weight had not ceased, but said nothing and simply opened the book between them as if nothing had happened.

His hair, she thought with sudden overwhelming fondness, was one of the things she loved most about him.

The brilliant fiery red swept far down his back in a low ponytail, and fell in haphazard jagged bangs into his lovely amethyst eyes. His features were a consistent blend of gentleness and vivacity.

The combination was enough to leave most girls, especially this one, breathless. Kenshin blinked his lavender orbs adorably.

“Kaoru-dono?” Kaoru flushed again when she realized she had been staring.

He was always so overly-formal with her, even though they'd known each other practically forever. She supposed this was part of his charm.

If it hadn't been for his deceivingly small build and somewhat feminine - although undeniably good-looking - features, he would have found himself with a ridiculously large fan club.

As it was, the fiery but good-natured Hirogeshi Shura, sophomore swim captain, was also vying for Kenshin's affections ever since his long-time girlfriend Yukishiro Tomoe had broken up with him.

People who didn't know about Kaoru's feelings for her best friend (In other words, almost the whole school) often commented carelessly on the uncanny similarities between her and Tomoe.

Apart from a few physical characteristics - long black hair, fair skin, etc… - Kaoru felt horribly inferior to the older girl's willowy, but graceful figure and her quiet, demure ways. Despite this, Kaoru had never felt truly bitter of Tomoe, especially not now that Kaoru had decided to confess her feelings to Kenshin this very night.

`Which I'll get around to!' she thought fiercely, but continued to stall. “Kenshin I—” she winced when her voice only came out as a tremulous squeak.

He watched her with that mysteriously fond expression he often wore when it was just the two of them together. It made her heart flutter, and at the same time gave a strange strength to her voice.

“I --” sayitsayitsayit! She tried again. Why couldn't she just spit the damn words out already?! “I --” loveyouloveyouloveyou! (Do not own)

And it was love. Kaoru had seen enough of loveless marriages to know at least vaguely what it looked like. Her feelings for Kenshin had ceased being a childhood infatuation long ago.

She sometimes cried for no apparent reason if he was not with her, and she could only console herself with thoughts of what they would do together when she saw him again. She felt at peace when she knew he was happy and she grieved when he was upset. He had become such an important part of her life that she could not imagine what it could possibly be like if he wasn't there.

This would prove to be her undoing…

Bracing herself mentally, Kaoru took a huge gulp of air. “Kenshin I've been in --”

“KAO-NEE-CHAN!!!” Came the overly hyper voice of her 12-year old sister Misao. “HaveyouseenwhereMegumiputthesugar?Iswearsheistryingtohideitfromme!&# 8221;

Misao didn't breathe until she saw the deadly look on Kaoru's face. She had flushed a dark scarlet out of pure fury and was grinding her teeth together to keep from jumping up and maiming her little sister severely.

`I. WAS. SO. DAMN. CLOSE!' It was too much. Her clenching fists released and she charged at a deeply frightened Misao, who promptly began screaming at the top of her lungs as she took off, running for dear life.

Unfortunately for Kaoru, she was too busy wanting to strangle Misao with her own braid to notice the impossibly soft way Kenshin was looking at her.

The next morning, Kaoru got up feeling as though she hadn't slept at all. Her stomach hurt and she had a mild headache.

`It couldn't be THAT time of the month already?' she worried ominously, though with doubt. She'd always been regular as an almanac.

Not thinking much about it, she grabbed a few Midol and swallowed them with a quick bite of toast and orange juice.

Prancing up the stairs, she showered quickly, dried and brushed out her long raven hair, put it in a high ponytail, and threw on her school uniform. It consisted of a short, but relatively modest black skirt with a matching black blazer over a collared white shirt.

She felt a bit cold today for some reason and opted to grab a long-sleeved collared shirt instead of the more seasonal one. She also wore her thickest pair of knee socks.

“See you guys after school! Love you!” she called into the house as she swiftly grabbed her backpack on the way outside.

Megumi often drove Misao to school on her way to the university, but Kaoru enjoyed walking and therefore left earliest.

The unsettled feeling in her stomach was not helped by the pills she took that morning, if anything, it grew steadily worse.

This very organ somersaulted into her throat for some odd reason when a certain red-head was missing from homeroom…
