It's been seven long years…

Seven long years since…

I left home…

Yes. I actually had the guts to leave…although the pain was unbearable, I couldn't stay any longer. All I could do was bring the little household a bundle of troubles…I would endanger their lives, even though they didn't mind. I didn't care. Their lives were far more important than mine…I couldn't stay any longer…

…so I left…

…left them all…even the one dearest to me…

…Kaoru…it broke my heart to see you cry. I know you're mad at me…for leaving…for not being there when you called out my name…I'm so sorry…

I reminisce all the memories we shared. I recall all the times we laughed. I can't believe myself! How stupid was I to not see the love so obvious in the glow of your eyes?! I finally stood up to you and told you how I truly felt and you accepted me…why? I know I don't deserve someone like you…but you loved me anyway despite my blood-stained hands and unforgivable past. I popped the question, you accepted. We are now joined and paired for eternity proved by the identical rings we wear till this day. But I was wondering…are you still wearing it? I am. Never took it off…I couldn't. The night of passion and pure bliss we shared together was something I couldn't just forget…

…so I walked down this vaguely familiar dirt road in the heart of Tokyo, after seven long years of misery and loneliness…

I stopped at the spot…our spot…the very area where I first expressed my love for you…the night I first left you…I even had the intention of never coming back from Kyoto…at this riverbank where nobody seems to find special. The night of darkness lit by fluttering fireflies and painful sadness…

I continued my walk, possessions in hand…my heart pounded even harder in my chest as I neared the gates of your quaint little home. I stopped dead on my tracks as I saw the same sign in the wooden gate.

“Kamiya Kasshin Ryuu, Kamiya Dojo”

I was half excited, half scared. I took in a deep breath to help me relax. I knocked lightly at the gate…

No response…

I knocked a bit louder… but then I heard soft footsteps to the gate. Now I'm really nervous. The gate slowly opened and I looked down only to behold a boy at around the age of six, “May I help you, kind sir?” he said, blue eyes gleaming. I knelt to his height so he wouldn't have to look up to me.

“Does a Kaoru Himura live here?” I asked.

“Please wait”

He was such a beautiful boy. He had brownish-red hair except his eyes were of azure blue.

“Okaasan! There's a man here to see you!”

“Who is it?”

“I don't know”

I heard footsteps padding to the door. I started to panic. I perspired at the thought that I was going to see you again.

“Kenji! I told you not to talk to strangers…”

“Hello.” I said plainly. This was all I wanted - to see you once more. I stood on my feet to take in a better view of you.

“What are you doing here?” you grabbed the young boy by the shoulders as if you were keeping him away from me.

“I wanted to see you again. Kaoru, I…”

“Get out!” I don't understand…

“Oi Jou-chan! What's going on?” Sano came in.

“Sano…” I called my friend's name.

“WHAT THE HELL ARE YOU DOING HERE?!”

“Sano…” he threw a punch at me and I fell flat on the ground… I really don't understand!

“ONLY MY FRIENDS CALL ME SANO!” he was going to give me another one…

“Sano Stop! He's not worth it!” you blocked his way.

`I'm not worth what?' I thought.

“kaasan…” the boy murmured.

“Kenshin…please leave…” you said shielding your eyes with raven strands.

“You can't just come in here and live your life before…” I can't believe what I'm hearing! Koishii…

“That was seven years ago…” tears started to flow from your eyes. Why is this so?

What I had feared finally came. Tears started trickling down my cheeks. I couldn't believe what I was seeing. Please let this be a nightmare…please let me wake up in the dojo with my beloved in my arms…please…Kami-sama…you started fidgeting with your fingers. I clenched my teeth due to unexplainable emotions burning inside my chest. Anger? Regret? Hatred? Your ring slid from your finger and it fell to the ground right in front of me…no…

“I don't know you anymore…” your bangs revealed your blue eyes to me…full of tears…

“Okaasan…” the boy cried.

“How would you like some sponge cake Kenji-chan.” You faked a smile again, for the boy's sake.

“That's right! Get out of here!” Sano threw his fish bone at me. I ignored him I couldn't show how I felt so I hid my face with red locks. I picked up the ring and saw my name engraved in the inside, `Kenshin, my love - forever'

I just sat there…oblivious to the world around me…it was just me and misery…after a few long minutes of dirt staring, I finally got a hold of myself. Seeing Sano still right in front of me, and that I desperately wanted to know what happened, I asked him,

“What happened?”

“Wait, wait, wait, wait, wait, hold on a second there! You mean to say that you had no idea what just happened?!”

“I-I don't understand…”

“Understand THIS - Once upon a time there was a happy couple. Then one night the man lost his senses and decided to leave. What he doesn't know is that his heartbroken wife couldn't eat for four weeks and she wanted to die. Next morning she was visited by the local doctor and told her she was two weeks pregnant. Because she loved her husband so much, she decided to keep the child and not let herself die. Seven years later, her insolent husband returned and wanted to live with her again but his sweet loving wife couldn't take it any more so she demanded divorce and she and her little boy lived happily ever after. O-WA-RI!”

“My…child…Kenji?”

“Yipidee-freakin-doo-daah! You just won two million yen!”

“Sano…Will you please let me see her again?”

“No.”

“Please…I beg of you…” I hid my face again.
“And cause more mayhem?! Heck no!”

“Let me see her…” Battousai took over me, my eyes were burning.

“No!”

“Let me see her now!” I unsheathed my sword and pointed it at his throat. I couldn't take it anymore! I could've sliced his throat then and there but I didn't. Although he was being very unreasonable, he was my friend. Drops of rain fell on us. The gate behind him slowly opened and there you stood, Kaoru, drenched and frustrated.

“Kenshin put the sword down!”

I did so without hesitation.

“Kaoru I…”

“Sano, get in.”

“I ain't leaving you out here!”

“Inside!” I didn't know you could be so demanding.

After a few minutes of solemn silence you spoke up to me.

“What do you want?”

“…forgiveness…”

“You have it. Please…Leave.”

“I can't…”

“WHY NOT?!” your yells were heard aside from the dripping sounds of raindrops. I fell silent once more, unable to answer a simple question.

“…better yet, why did you leave?”

Once again, I fell silent. What should I say? The truth sounded awfully pathetic but I know I couldn't lie to you. You're my wife, after all. Courage struck me from inside and I told you what you had to hear.

“I love you…”

“That doesn't answer my question.”

“I love you…”

“THEN WHY'D YOU LEAVE?!” you once again raised your voice. I heard short breaths of air from you, and soft moans. I didn't deserve your tears, but your reaction to the situation felt quite right. I wanted to comfort you but I couldn't. I tried anyway. I held my arms out, gesturing you for a warm hug.

“Why did you leave?! Do you not love me!? Do I not make a good wife?! Do I not please you?! Is it because I'm broke?! ANSWER ME!”

“No, it's none of those.”

“WHY THEN?! Do you know how hard it is to raise a child on your own? Do you know how hard it is to tend to 3 tenants in a small dojo? DO YOU KNOW HOW HARD IT IS TO TELL THE CHILD THAT HIS DADDY WOULD BE COMING HOME SOON ALTHOUGH HE KNOWS VERY WELL THAT HIS DADDY DOESN'T EXIST?! WELL, DO YOU?”

“No…but do you know how hard it is to leave your loved one, the one most dearest to you, only to make her fell safe and secure from her monstrous husband?”

“Do you think I felt safe and secure when you left? I lost my senses back then, Kenshin. I couldn't eat for a month. I wanted to die. I needed you! You knew that very well! You've ran out of excuses. Why did you leave?”

“Kaoru…”

“Why did you leave?”

“Kaoru…”

“WHY…DID…YOU…LEAVE?!” your eyes were burning blue then. I can't stop now! I wrapped you around my arms but you were struggling to break free. I won't! I can't lose you ever again!

“Let go of me! Let go! Why? Why did you leave me? Why?” soft whimpers and sobs soaked my gi even more. I cried, unable to hold the pain in any longer.

“I'm so sorry…” I softly sobbed against your raven hair.

Sobs and sniffs was the ambience of our atmosphere. You raised you head and I once again saw the glow in your eyes. They were of a different glow…more…radiant…full of love…

“Don't ever leave me again…”

I closed the gap with a soft kiss. This book was closed. I led us to the nearest bedroom as we made love for the first time in seven years…

I woke up with you by my side. I smiled at the thought that we were together once again. You squirmed around my arms and you turned around, showing me those blue orbs again.

“Anata…” I haven't heard that in a long time.

“Koibitou…” I haven't said that in a long time as well.

“I want my ring back…” you smiled. I placed the ring on your left hand on the ring finger…where it should be…

“Where it should be…” I whispered kissing your forehead.

“Kenji!” I sat straight.

“Don't worry…he knows…I told him his daddy came back and he had to wait with Sano in the row house…”

I smiled at the cleverness of you as I reached in for a passionate kiss.

“I love you…”

“I love you too…”
