Sailor Moon Fan Fiction ❯ Ami ❯ Ami ( One-Shot )

Ami sighed as she shook the rain from her hair. It had been a long evening at the hospital and she still had homework to do. Dropping her bag in the hall, she headed to the kitchen for a snack. She'd left her lunch at home and hadn't had anything to eat since the night before.
Hearing the noise from her room, Mrs. Anderson came down to greet her daughter.
"You're home. That's good. I can't talk long but I wanted to see how that exam went."
"As I expected it to. An almost perfect score. Greg beat me by a point. What do you mean, you can't talk long?"
"It was really sudden; I swear it wasn't planned. One of the researchers has gotten ill in the
jungles of South Africa. It's really remote and they need a doctor/researcher. No one else would do it so I stepped in and volunteered. I leave tonight." Mrs. Anderson looked at her
watch. "Actually, in precisely 30 minutes."
"Mom, we had plans tomorrow."
"I know. I'm sorry but it just happened."
"It just happened that you volunteered?"
Mrs. Anderson's face grew stern. "Ami, don't be so childish. You know this is important."
"But that was important, too. I hardly get to see you and do anything with you. I was really getting excited about this tomorrow. Never mind anymore. I'm tired and I've got homework to do.
Enjoy your trip. You'll be gone a month?"
"Two." Ami began to walk out of the kitchen. "Where are you going?"
"To my room, Mom."
"I'm not finished talking. Stay here."
"You have a plane to catch. I'm going to my room. I don't want to listen any more."
"I don't care what you want! You will stay, young lady!"
"What will you do? Actually stay home for once in your life? Ever since I can remember, the only real interest you have ever shown in my life is my grades. I have been raised by nurses and maids. I can remember watching you through the stairs as you hurried off to another country. It always seemed as though you loved your projects and research and job more than your own child!"
Mrs. Anderson's hand flew up and hit Ami's face. Ami reeled back, surprise dulling the pain momentarily. Tears swam to her eyes and she ran off leaving her mother standing in the kitchen with her hand red and throbbing.
Ami ran, not knowing where until she stopped, breathless and tired. She caught her breath and walked. Walking for what seemed an eternity, she stopped and looked around herself. The
beach lay in front of her, wild and restless. Ami smiled. She knew this area well. When she was little, before her father left, Ami would come here with him. She would play in the sand until sunset and her father would take her in his arms and they would watch the sunset together.
Climbing onto a rock, she watched the sky change color and the sun begin to rise. She thought of the words she'd spoken to her mother and winced as she remembered. Ami wiped at the tears
beginning to fall and looked out at the ocean. Light was playing off the waves as they crashed angrily at the rocks, as though it felt what Ami felt and was lashing out. Ami, despite her anger, found herself being comforted by the raging of the water at her feet.
She had been there for hours when she heard a car pull up behind her and someone get out.
Footsteps crunched softly on the sand and Ami felt a hand on her shoulder. Still looking out at the ocean. she shrugged the hand off. "Why are you here?"
Ami heard a sigh. "You know why, Ami. Because I love you."
"You never act like it."
"But I do. I know it's hard to understand but someday you will."
"No, I won't. I'll never understand why you insist on running away every time I want to get to know you. You only care about my grades and you insist I act perfect, that I be perfect."
"Who told you that?"
"No one. I only assumed."
"You know what they say about assuming things. Ami, I have
never once told you that I expect you to be perfect. I do hold you to high standards. I expect you to do well in school and make good grades and to be a lady like I told you. Never have I asked perfection of you. And as for running away, I admit that I do that. I get scared, Ami. I get scared you'll grow up and you'll disapprove of me. You're so smart and independent, everything I wasn't when I was your age.. Oh Ami, I'm sorry. I know you've had it rough. And things will change, today, now. I'll cut back my hours at work and I'll try not to go out of town so often."
"I'm sorry I said what I said. I didn't mean it."
"I hope you did."
"What?"
"I never want you to ever say something you don't mean. If you feel like you don't want to do something then say it. I'm glad you spoke your mind last night. Things will be different because of it. Oh, but I'm tired. I've been driving all around Tokyo looking for you."
"And you just now found me?"
"Tokyo is a big place, you know. But after driving around I realized that this is where you'd be. Your father used to bring you here when you got mad, which wasn't often. He used to tell me that you would fight the waves and it would calm you. Now I'm hungry. Want to go get breakfast?"
"Yes."
"Promise?"
"No. I want to stay here a little longer. Speaking of staying, you missed your flight last night. Aren't you going?"
"Not unless you want to miss our outing today. Oh Ami, I'll never do that to you again. I promise. I love you." Mrs. Anderson wrapped her arms around Ami in a hug and Ami smiled as she returned it. When the hug broke, Mrs. Anderson sighed. "Now I'm really hungry. Let's go get breakfast and you can tell me about this Greg."
Ami blushed as she stood and wrapped her arm around her mother's waist. "He's just some boy I met last year."
They started walking and Mrs. Anderson looked down at her daughter. "Just some boy? Ami, they're never "just some boy". You know, you can have him over one night if you like...."
Ami sighed happily as the rain began to fall once more. She was tired but it wasn't the tired she'd felt the night before. Her day was long last night and it was going to be long again. But with the comforting support of her mother, she wasn't going to mind at all.
