:: Aquaphobia ::

Rei stared at the water with wide eyes.

"No, fucking, way." She growled at the blonde next to her. Usagi pouted. "Oh come on Rei-chan! What's wrong with taking a swim in the pool?"

Rei glanced back at the water and stiffened as memories began to flood her mind.

"Daddy!" a young Rei cried as she held a pint-sized fish on her hook. "Lookit! I caughted one Daddy!"

A tall man with raven hair chuckled and raised a thick eyebrow. "How big is it Rei-chan?" he asked playfully.

"Umm," Rei looked at the little fish and said, "It's as big as a Sharptooth!"

Rei's father laughed. "'Sharptooth'?"

"It's what the baby dinosaurs call those big dinosaurs on 'Land Before Time' Daddy!" Rei pouted. "Don't you know nothin'?"

Rei's father scratched his head and grinned. "Bring that Sharptooth fish over here so we can cook it!" Rei giggled and leaped on a damp stone. "Coming Daddy!" She jumped on another stone.

And lost her footing.

Rei screamed as she fell into the pond, her small feet flying from under her. The water parted around her and for a split second, she saw her father's face, contorted in pure horror. Then, it rushed in, enveloping her with its deadly embrace. She opened her mouth to scream, but water rushed in there too. She kicked and pushed with all her might, but the surface and the sun were simply drifting away from her.

'Daddy!' she screamed in her mind. 'Help me!'

"Rei? Rei! Hellooooo? Anyone there?"

Rei blinked and caught the hand that was waving in her face. "What?" she asked, slightly irritated that Usagi had been invading her personal space and slightly relieved that the blonde-haired girl had resurfaced her from her own thoughts.

"You just kinda zoned out on me there."

"Sorry."

It was then that they realized that Rei still held Usagi's hand in her own. The raven-haired girl blushed and let go as if Usagi's had burned her.

Silence reigned between.

Usagi was the one to speak first. "I think I know what you need Rei." There was something in her voice that set warning bells off in Rei's head, but she didn't really pay attention.

"And what would that be Odango-Atama?"

Usagi grinned evilly. "A good PUSH!"

Usagi caught Rei off guard, grabbed her wrist and tugged the Fire Senshi to the water with all of her might. Rei's eyes widened as the water came rushing.

It was almost saying, "Welcome back." And that's when she did something she hadn't done in a long time.

She screamed. The wail seemed to ripped from her heart, from her soul. She'd tried so hard to be strong, to get over it, but she couldn't. History seemed to repeat itself as the water parted around her, giving her a split second to make eye contact with Usagi.

It was all that was needed.

Usagi's laughing face fell as she saw the stark terror in Rei's eyes. Her face went from confused, to horrified as she realized something.

This wasn't a game anymore. Rei's scream wasn't a startled scream. It wasn't a shriek of joy. Of anger.

Rei was scared. And that, made Usagi realize something even more heart-wrenching.

Rei would hate her for this. No, hate was too soft a word. Rei would utterly dispise her for this.

The raven-haired girl fell head first into Usagi's pool. She clawed and thrashed in the liquid, eyes shut as she paddled her way in what she hoped was the right way up.

When her fingers touched the concrete, she knew, without a doubt, that she'd gone the wrong way.

And she was out of air.

Rei screamed but the wail was muffled underneath the water.

'Daddy!' she cried. 'Daddy help me please!'

Then, it seemed as if all the fight just, flowed out of her. She relaxed and watched through half lidded eyes at the flickering sun.

'That's right,' she thought as she heard a weird sound coming from above. 'Daddy dosen't want me anymore...He can't save me...'

As she felt small, but sure hands grab her from underneath her arms, Rei closed her eyes and surrendered to the dark. 'Can you Usagi?'

Usagi gasped as she broke the surface of the water. She dragged Rei's still form over to the edge and hauled her up. "Oh God Rei-chan," she whispered as she rolled the limp miko on her back. "I'm so sorry!"

Her hands hovered over Rei's body, half afraid to touch her, half afraid that she would hurt her.. "CPR," she whispered to herself.

Usagi placed her hands over Rei's chest and pumped three times. Pinching Rei's nose shut, she leaned down and breathed air into her friend. She pumped her hands three more times, before she leaned over to breath into her friend again. After the fourth time she did this, Rei sat up and sapt out what seemed like a gallon of water. Wheezing for air, frantic violet eyes searched for something.

Until they landed on Usagi. Giving a mournful little wail, the miko lunged toward the moon hime and grabbed her in a hug. Usagi's breath escaped in a shaky sigh of relief as she simply held the miko's trembling body.

Later, Ami would say that Rei was diagnosed with aquaphobia.

A fear of water.
