Chapter 3: Heart to Heart

~

`Well, what did you expect?' Rei screamed at herself. `For Usagi to return your feelings? To be able to hold her and wake up next her?' She slumped against a wall, `To be able to hide your feelings forever?'

Tears continued to run down her cheeks as she picked herself off the ground and continued to walk. She bumped into someone as she walked and fell back into the snow. "Gomen," she said as she got up without looking.

"Rei-chan?"

She froze. `No.' Turning to the voice, her suspicion was confirmed.

It was him.

"Are you all right?" he asked.

"Why would you care?" she snapped.

He was visibly hurt by the comment, and Rei took pleasure in that fact. `Deserves the bastard right for stealing her heart, breaking it, and holding onto the pieces for himself.'

"Rei-chan," he said, still concerned for the girl. "Do you want to talk about it?"

Rei was taken aback by the question. "With you? No," she shook her head in disgust.

"Listen, I know you probably hate my guts right now. There's nothing I can do about how you feel about me. But I'll still listen to your problems with a helpful ear if you want to talk it off."

Rei looked at the man before her with a respect she hadn't felt for him since they had dated briefly. Smiling, she decided to take him up on his offer. "All right, but you're not going to like what I'm going to have to say."

"I kind of figured that already," he replied, a sad smile gracing his lips.

They walked to a small café near Rei's high school. It wasn't anywhere she ever went with the other girls, so she wasn't worried about Usagi finding her.

"So what's on your mind?" Mamoru asked after they had ordered two cups of coffee.

She smiled faintly as she looked at him. "What's on yours?" she shot back, already knowing the answer.

"Usagi," they replied in unison, causing a chuckle to rise from both of them.

"So, you finally told her how you feel, huh?" he asked with a sly smile.

Rei's cheeks flushed as she stammered a response. "No… how… Wait, you knew?"

He laughed at her response. "Of course. You had to be blind not to see it," his face grew somber. "If only I could have loved her half as much as you do, things might have turned out differently."

Rei glared at him, her anger starting to rise as she remembered what he had done to Usagi. "Is Maori - is that her name? - Was she worth it?"

The prince of the Earth just sighed. "I don't know. She's great and all, but she's no Usagi-chan."

"Are you stupid enough to think anyone could compare to Usagi?" she asked in disbelief. "Why did you do it?"

He looked down to the coffee cup that had just been brought, as if hoping to find the answer somewhere in it's murky depths. "No matter what I say, it will sound as if I'm telling a bold face lie, or trying to justify it somehow," he sighed. "I do know now that nothing could have prepared me for her walking in on us. I don't regret it, if that's what you are asking. It would have been impossible for me to tell her we were through, again."

"So instead of being a man about it, you take a coward's path: fuck someone else until she finds out on her own? What the hell is that?" It took every ounce of control in Rei to keep her from screaming.

"You're right, of course. I was too afraid of change to be able to tell her. I tell you what though, I have never been more afraid in my life than when she yelled at me," he smiled nervously.

"Good," Rei spat. "You were nothing but a bastard that could never see what you had."

Then, looking into her own cup, "What you still have."

"What?"

She looked at him, hate glaring in her eyes. "She still loves you, you asshole," she said calmly. "Even though you took her trust and threw it out the window, even though you didn't respect her enough to at least tell her you were through before you screwed someone else, even through all the times you have broken her heart, she still loves you. What the fuck do you think of that?" Tears were threatening to fall, but Rei's pride would not allow her to cry in front of him.

Mamoru, for his part, was shocked, to say the least. "She still... how… what?" he stumbled, trying to get a grip on what Rei had just revealed to him.

Rei gazed at the table, feeling as if she had just betrayed Usagi.

"If she loves me, then why won't she return my calls? Why won't she talk to me when I see her on the street? Are you just playing a cruel joke? Because if you are, I hope you're finding it funny -"

"It's not a joke, jackass," she whispered. She smiled wryly as she shook her head. "She will always love you. You were her first love," she looked at him with resignation. "But she can never trust you again. This runs deeper than anything else anyone could have done. Usagi's heart is filled with love for any and everything, but you held a bigger part than the rest of it combined." Tears were streaming down her cheeks as she stood to leave.

"You managed to do the one thing our enemies never could. You made her give up hope."

Rei, no longer trying to conceal her tears, pulled out a 200 yen note and threw it on the table. "I hate you," she said as she walked out the door.

It was everything Chiba Mamoru could do to not break down crying in the café.

`Why did I say that? Another one I love runs out of my life. Oh Kami, please let her forgive me for lying to her.'

Rei ran through the blizzard, blinded by her tears. She was so angry she wanted to scream. So sad, all she wanted was to disappear. And so in love she just wanted to be held.

"An eternity with a one-sided love is too much to bear," she whispered as she slowed to a walk. "I can't -"

Rei's head suddenly hurt and her vision faded.

~

"Are you sure it's her this time?" the man asked as he looked at the prone form at his feet.

"It's her," the woman sneered, walking out of the shadows.
