Fare thee well, little broken heart

Downcast eyes, lifetime loneliness

Endymion slowly opened his eyes. The first thing he became aware of was Serenity's moonlight scent hitting his nostrils. Smiling softly to himself, he reached out a hand to touch what he most certainly thought was there, but was surprised when what he felt was the soft fabric of the bed sheets. Funny, Endymion thought, I hadn't heard Serenity get up. Maybe I really am a sound sleeper like Serenity says I am.

Standing up and stretching, Endymion took a look around the room. It seemed kind of odd to him… something, somewhere, seemed a little off. As he became more alert and awake, Endymoin could have sworn that there were some things missing, mainly Serenity's things.

Hell, they were all of Serenity's things, Endymion noticed.

What the heck is going on here? Endymion though, puzzled, as he made his way to the bathroom. Stepping in to wash up and brush his teeth, Endymion's eyes drifted over to the toothbrush holder, which seemed a little empty. He then saw Serenity's toothbrush, which usually lay next to his, was gone. Endymion opened the medicine cabinet and gasped at how empty it looked when it only contained his things. He didn't realize how much stuff Serenity kept in there.

Endymion's knees started to shake as he slid to the floor, quickly realizing what had happened.

Did… did Serenity leave me?

Whatever walks in my heart will walk alone

Constant longing, for the perfect soul

Unwashed scenery forever gone

Whatever walks in my heart will walk alone

Deciding that this all must be some nightmare his tired mind produced to him, Endymion stood on shaky legs as he exited the bathroom and entered the conservatory. But he noticed more of Serenity's things missing, he knew he was indeed living in reality. His mind raced with the events last night. Had anything occurred between the two lovers that would just have Serenity up and leave him like that? Endymion tried as hard as he could to think, but nothing came to mind that would make Serenity leave him.

Endymion then noticed the note sitting on the conservatory table. Sure enough, his name was scrawled across the front of it. Afraid of what the letter might hold, Endymion reluctantly reached out and opened it, his eyes filled with tears as he read the words contained within.

Endymion,

Consider yourself lucky that I left a note concerning my sudden departure. Sorry to break this to you, but things aren't going to work out between the two of us. I don't see a future for us. I hated to have gotten your hopes up. After what we did last night, I got to thinking and realized I really don't love you. I was only blinded by my need to do something unladylike. I hope you realize any exchange of words between us from now on will be strictly business. Have a good life.

Serenity

Endymion winced at the choice of words Serenity had used. She wanted to be “unladylike” instead of a gentle princess. Was that the only use Endymion was to Serenity? Someone she could get between the sheets to pleasure her?

Endymion noticed the paper in his hands grow wet with the tears that freely fell from his eyes. But he didn't care. The only woman he had ever loved… the only person he had ever loved, and whom he thought returned those feelings… just told him that he was exactly the opposite.

“Why, Serenity?” Endymion asked aloud, his voice shaky. “Why did you use me like that? I thought…”

No love left in me

No eyes to see the heaven beside me

My time is yet to come

So I'll be forever yours

Endymion remembered when Serenity had confessed her “love” to him. She had said things to Endymion that nobody had ever said to him… words he thought were coming from Serenity's heart. And they seemed to be… but now that Endymion thought about it, her voice hadn't possessed a loving tone of any sort. It had been lust… pure and simple lust.

Endymion grit his teeth as the memories flooded back to him. What a fool he had been! He had been through similar situations countless times, and each time he had allowed himself to be fooled. Serenity had been no exception. Endymion couldn't understand how he couldn't see through Serenity's act… how Serenity just took the feelings she knew Endymion had for her and use them to her advantage, with no intention of having Endymion's heart.

Instead, she chose to walk on Endymion's heart just to bring herself some pleasure, just like so many others had. But for some reason, he saw something with Serenity that he didn't with all the others. He saw sincerity… he saw honesty… he saw someone who cared for him… he saw so much more… when in reality all he saw was a living lie. He had been blinded by the love that he felt for the moon princess.

“God damn it… Serenity…” Endymion whispered, the tears which had stopped momentarily starting to fall again as more memories came back to him.

Whatever walks in my heart will walk alone

Endymion remembered how Serenity would spill her heart out to him, and tell him things of her past that he knew Serenity had not told to anyone else; and in turn, Endymion had done the same. It seemed to Endymion that Serenity had trusted him, and had maybe loved him, just as the Earthian man had loved and trusted her… all Serenity was looking for was a good time, doing “unladylike” things, as she so blatantly put it.

Endymion didn't know how it happened, but he soon found himself sitting on the saddle of his horse, riding furiously to the moon, his mind set on confronting Serenity about this. He had to set the moon princess straight, and he had to get more answers. He wanted them from Serenity's mouth, not from a piece of paper.

No love left in me

No eyes to see the heaven beside me

My time is yet to come

So I'll be forever yours

Serenity's face kept popping into Endymion's mind as he drove, distracting him even further than he was at the moment. He realized what had attracted him to Serenity in the first place… her gorgeous blue eyes. Endymion had always been a sucker for eyes. Serenity's eyes were quite stunning… somehow captivating, and he found that he couldn't draw himself away from what he considered Serenity's best feature. He would find himself daydreaming about those eyes many times during his day, and at night, he would dream of them. He would dream of the day when Serenity would cast a loving look in Endymion's direction with those eyes. And that day finally did occur… or so he thought. The moment had gone as quickly as it had come.

Surprisingly, Endymion found himself in the courtyard of the castle in one piece. Getting off of his horse and forcefully tying the reigns to a pillar, Endymion stalked his way up to his and Serenity's room, finding his unfaithful princess sitting there, sipping on some tea and reading a book. She didn't even glance up as she heard Endymion enter the room.

Endymion slammed his fist down onto the table. “Who the fuck do you think you are?” he growled.

Serenity looked up, acting oblivious as to the reason of Endymion's foul mood. She then proceeded to shrug her shoulders and ignore Endymion, going back to her book.

This only angered Endymion more. He walked over to Serenity and grabbed her by a pigtail, pulling her out of her chair and pushing her back against the wall. “Don't you dare play your fucking games with me, Princess,” Endymion seethed, pulling emphasis on the last word.

Serenity found she couldn't meet Endymion's gaze. “I thought my letter said all that needed to be said,” Serenity said nonchalantly, a smug look on her features.

“How could you fucking do this to me, Serenity? AFTER ALL WE'VE BEEN THROUGH!” Endymion yelled, not caring if he would cause a scene or not.

What Serenity did next caused Endymion's eyes to widen in astonishment.

Serenity laughed at him.

Whatever walks in my heart will walk alone

Serenity was laughing so hard; Endymion could see the tears rolling down her cheeks. “You… you can't be… serious… can you, Endymion?” Serenity managed to say between fits of laughter.

Endymion just continued to glare at her.

Serenity went on, seeming to have calmed down a little. “Don't tell me you took any of our actions seriously?” Another glare. “I can't believe you, Endymion! I didn't think you were that stupid!” Serenity started to laugh again.

Endymion couldn't take any more. He pulled his fist back and punched Serenity hard in the face. Serenity fell to the ground out of Endymion's grip, startled and holding her cheek, already feeling a nasty bruise forming there. “Why, you little…!” Serenity hissed.

Endymion crouched down so he was eye-level with Serenity, the hurt clearly showing on his face. “You selfish little bitch. To think I even fell in love with you… I feel so incredibly stupid for being fooled by your act. You told me you loved me, Serenity… how the hell did you expect me to react? I let you into my home, my heart, and my soul… and for what? Tell me, Serenity… why the hell should I have to suffer so you can benefit from a simple pleasure? Do you think any man would just give himself so willingly like that? God, Serenity… you were the first person I gave that special gift to. I vowed to myself that I would stay a virgin until I was sure I had found my soul mate. And you… you fooled me into thinking that you were. How the hell do you feel when you've taken something precious from someone… knowing that you lied… ANSWER ME, SERENITY!” Endymion commanded.

Whatever walks in my heart…

Serenity shrugged and looked away. “Just get away from me, Endymion. This conversation is over. I have nothing more to say to you.” Serenity stood and brushed herself off before exiting their room, leaving behind a hurt and ashamed Endymion.

I gave her everything without asking for anything in return…

Endymion sat down on a plush chair, burying his head in his hands, his body shaking with the tears that wracked his body. He didn't care who would walk in at that moment… he didn't care who would see him cry. He couldn't hold it back.

Serenity… why did you betray me… I thought you really loved me… God, why?

Endymion knew that no matter what just happened, he'd never stop loving Serenity. He knew those feelings would never be returned, but his feelings couldn't be denied. For as long as he lived, Serenity would forever haunt his dreams.
