I AM PRETTY
By Sailor DKC
"Lady Raye, may I say it has been the greatest pleasure being your
companion to the ball tonight."
"But of course it was!"
"If I may, would it be possible for me to accompany you to the
Harvest Festival on Earth?"
"Oh, I'm sorry, Lord Devon, but I promised Sir Chadlore that he would
be my escort."
"Oh, I see. Perhaps then-"
"Another time, then! Ta!"
Blowing him a kiss, Raye turned and headed into the halls of the Moon
Palace to her room. How she loved having many handsome suitors. It
gives her the ability to show off how pretty she looks standing with
them.
'Men are so into my looks,' Raye thought as she undressed in her
room. After slipping on her gown, she sat down at her dresser and
brushed her long black hair. "I am pretty!" she sang. "Oh, so
pretty! I put other girls into shame! And there's no man out there
that I cannot tame!"
A knock sounded on her door. "Oh, just in the middle of my favorite
part!" Raye said, angrily, as she went to answer it. She opened the
door to reveal Princess Serena. "Oh, your highness!" Raye quickly
kneeled onto the floor.
"Raye, please, get up!" Serena chuckled, entering.
After getting up and shutting the door, Raye followed the princess
and waited until Serena sat on her dresser chair. She stood before
her. Serena began talking. "I need you to be ready for tomorrow for
we are receiving guests. Prince Darien of Earth is arriving with his
guardians."
"Of, course, your Majesty."
"You will be an escort for one of his guardians."
"Who will it be?"
"It will be either your or the guardian's choice. The other
princesses, Amy, Lita, and Mina, have been given notice. So look your
best."
"As always, your Highness."
Serena looked at Raye for a moment, then smiled. "Raye, I swear you
seem to enjoy meeting different men everytime they visit the Moon."
"I can't help it if men find me gorgeous!" Raye struck a pose. "So I
make their dreams come true. Just standing next to me or being my
escort to the festivities."
"Oh, Raye!" Serena protested. "What about those who want more than
just a pretty face? I understand Sir Chadlore is smitten with you. I
hope you're not encouraging him too much."
"Well, I admit he follows me around like a lovesick puppy, and he is
kind of cute, but it's not serious. I can't help it if he asks me out
just at the last second I need a date!" Raye shrugged with her arms
open.
"Yes, but going out with him a lot is making him believe that you are
serious about having a relationship!"
"Aw, Serena! Don't worry!" laughed Raye, giving a wave of her hand
like it's no big deal. "It's not true. Chadlore is just another guy
who dreams of being with a gorgeous princess. Me!"
Serena sighed. "I just hope you realize soon that being pretty isn't
all there is to be." She got up and walked to the door. "Good night,
Raye. See you tomorrow."
"Good night, Serena," Raye replied as Serena shut the door behind
her.
The next day, in the throne room, the four princesses met with the
four guardians. After introductions were made by Queen Serenity,
she, Princess Serena and Prince Darien went to the conference room to
discuss royal business.
Raye watched with keen interest at the four guardians who stood
before her and her friends. She admitted to herself that they are all
very handsome. 'But who is the lucky one who'll be with me?' she
thought, giddily.
The first guardian to step forward had long white shocking hair.
'Ooh, good-looking, but he looks so serious,' Raye observed.
"My name is Malachite, and you are-?" he asked, lending his hand out
to the blonde with the red bow.
"Mina," she said as she took his hand. They proceeded to leave the
throne room.
'Hmmmm, maybe Mina is suited for him. After all, she is very bubbly
and lively. That Malachite looks like he could loosen up a bit!' Raye
thought, then heard Amy gasp. Turning, she watched one of the other
guardians tipping her friend's chin to make her look at him. This
guardian had long red hair with hints of blond in it.
"Such beauty should not be looking down at the floor," he commented.
"My name is Zoicite. And what is your name?"
"Amy," the blue-haired girl answered, blushing. He offered his arm to
her, and she took it. They were the next to leave.
In shock, Raye thought to herself, 'Shy Amy with that gorgeous hunk?
I'm not jealous, but why didn't he come to me? I'm just as pretty as
he is.'
There were two pairs of couple left. Raye looked at the two last men.
One had long brown hair, and although his face was serious, there was
a hint of gentleness in his eyes. The other had short blond hair and
had a rugged look in his face. Raye noticed he was staring at her
intently, not a stare of awe or admiration, but a stare of something
deep and dark. She felt like he was staring right into her soul, and
it excited her a little.
The girl with the soft brown-haired ponytail spoke up. "I'm Lita. I
can give you a tour of the Moon gardens. I'm sure your planet has
gardens and-" Trailing off, she covered her mouth in embarrassment.
'I can't believe Lita said that!' thought Raye, rolling her eyes to
one side.
Suddenly, the dark brown-haired guardian started laughing softly.
"Very amusing," he said, stepping forward and taking Lita's hand.
"For an ice breaker. I'm Nephlite. Come, show me these gardens that
we on Earth are suppose to have."
Laughing, Lita led him to the hallway that leads to the gardens. Now
Raye was alone with the blond short-haired guardian. Looking at him
more closely, she admitted he looked really handsome. Folding her
hands behind her back, she walked up to him as he folded his arms
across his chest. "So," she began. "it's, uh, just you and me. I'm
Raye." She offered her hand. He took it and just shook it.
"Jedite," he replied, quietly, as he let go of her hand.
Raising an eyebrow, Raye thought, 'What's with this guy? He didn't
even kiss my hand.' She cleared her throat. "You know there are
public park concerts with a lot of singing performances in the city
near our kingdom. Would you care to go?"
"All right." Jedite offered his arm, she took it, and they both left
the throne room.
The concert was entertaining, and the singers were amazingly
talented. During the event, many men passed by and greeted Raye
enthusiastically. She responded by waving back and giving them a
smile or a wink. Several times, she stole a glance at Jedite, who was
sitting next to her, expecting him to be staring at her. But the
whole time, he was focused on the concert. Frowning, she stopped
responding to her admirers and concentrated on the concert. When
intermission arrived, Jedite turned to her and asked, "Would you care
for something to eat?"
Startled that he finally spoke to her, Raye stammered, "Um, um, yes.
Anything is fine."
He got up, bowed, and left to seek out the refreshment stand.
Raye took the opportunity to take out her purse mirror and looked at
herself. 'Is something wrong with the way I look? He never said a
word to me since the concert started.' As she checked her features,
she didn't notice someone coming up behind her. Only when she turned
the mirror a bit did she see his reflection. "Oh, Chadlore!" she
cried out, turning and standing to face him. She put her mirror away.
"How nice to meet you!"
"Raye, what are you doing here?" asked Chadlore. "You told me last
week you couldn't come to these concerts with me."
"Oh, I'm just here as an escort with one of Prince Darien's
guardians."
"I see." Chadlore frowned. "And it's just duty, isn't it?"
"Of course it is!" Raye gave him one of her pretty smiles which made
Chadlore smile back and straighten up.
"Then would you be my companion to the ice skating festival in your
kingdom?" he asked.
"Oh, I'm so sorry. I promised Sir Gerald that he'll take me."
Losing his smile, Chadlore blinked, confused. "Is this also duty?"
Puzzled, Raye looked at him. "No, he's my date."
"Date?" His eyes widened in shock. "But I thought you and I were
getting serious. You've accepted every date with me."
"Oh, I date other men as well, but you're my favorite. You're always
there whenever I need a date."
"Need?" Chadlore said, his voice trembling a little. "I'm a spare?"
"Not a spare, Chadlore. Just someone to be with in case no one else
turns up." Raye shrugged her shoulders as if the matter was closed.
Chadlore looked off to one side as if Raye was not there anymore.
"You never cared about me at all?" he spoke softly.
Raye then felt that maybe she spoke a little too rash. "Chadlore, I
thought we were just friends and I-"
"I must go." He turned and left very quickly.
Opening her mouth in protest, Raye wanted to say something, but
nothing came out. Feeling awful, she sat back in her chair.
"That was very cruel of you to treat him that way," said a deep
voice. Raye whirled wide-eyed to face Jedite, holding a couple of
wrapped sandwiches. No one was nearby to hear the conversation
between them.
"Were you eavesdropping?" Raye huffed, standing up to face him. "How
dare you!"
"Me?" Jedite chuckled, sarcastically, putting down the sandwiches on
her chair. "You dare to string that poor guy's heart along with other
men you have dated." At Raye's astonishing gasp, he continued, "Yes,
I know of you and your dating lifestyle, Princess Raye. 'Love'em from
one guy to the next.' When I heard that you were part of the royal
court of Princess Serena, I couldn't believe a lady like you could be
a heartbreaker for men!"
"I'm not a heartbreaker!" Raye angrily said, placing her hands on her
hips. "I don't string men's hearts like a necklace!"
"Oh, please!" Jedite crossed his arms and rolled his eyes. "How many
other guys like that Chadlore have you gotten their hopes up and
dashed? After what I've seen throughout this whole night, all you
care about is being seen, not being with!"
Scoffing with her mouth open, Raye stared at him. Then she finally
found her voice. "Well, well, well, well, well...what about you?" she
burst furiously. "You think you can just judge me after we just met
today? I'm only doing my duty in being your escort for this evening.
By Mars' fire, I can't believe I even considered you being lucky to
be with me! What a waste of time this evening was! You didn't speak a
word to me or show any notice that I'm actually here. At least, when
I do a duty, I try to make the task more enjoyable and comfortable.
You act like my company with you is a burden. And to top it all off,
you accuse me of heartbreaking! Well, let me tell you something, Lord
Jedite, I-"
He swept her up in his arms and slapped a kiss on her lips.
* Astonished, Raye stared wide-eyed as Jedite, eyes closed, kissed
her. She placed her right hand on his chest, to steady herself. *
The kiss deepened and she finally closed her eyes as she gave in to
his rough yet gentle manhandling of her. She felt him sneaking a hand
to her bottom and pressing her against him. Gasping, she broke off
the kiss as she felt him. They stared at each other. After a while,
he started moving against her slowly, very slowly. Moaning, Raye
tried to pull away. "Stop," she whispered, feeling his hot breath
against her lips. "We're in a public place."
In response, he held her tighter and she gasped again, feeling him.
Bending his head to touch her forehead with his, he whispered back,
"You're more than a pretty face, you know."
A bell tone sounded, signaling the end of intermission. Jedite
finally released her. Breathing hard, he stepped back as people
started to fill in seats. "Whatever happens," he said. "I will not
be one of your heart strings." Then he looked up and down, surveying
her. "But this I know, if we are ever in the same situation again, it
will be more than kissing." He grinned leeringly at her, chuckled
wickedly, turned and walked off, his cape swirling about him.
Also breathing hard, Raye balanced on a chair before her with one
hand. 'What a night,' she thought, frustrated. 'At least it can't get
any worse, can it?" As she sat down in her chair, she heard and felt
a squishing sound. She got up to turn and see the remains of the
sandwiches Jedite brought on the chair and on her dress where she
sat. Making an exasperated face, she scooped the mess from her dress
and stared at it. "Obviously, it can," she said, as she threw the
mess on the ground.
"SHHHH!" someone whispered as the concert began.
