"I Wanna Be A Star!"

Author's note: This story is based on the "Sailor Moon: Songs from the Hit TV Series" soundtrack album. It occurs after the English-dubbed episode, "Sibling Rivalry" (Japanese episode 72).

Some anime purists that are reading this may hate that I'm Americanizing the series, but I have to. I don't know enough about Japanese culture or geography to set it in Japan. Also, I prefer the North American character names over the Japanese character names. The girls live in San Fernando, California, thus explaining Serena's accent and dialect. I've also given the characters American last names, which I had discovered at the Internet Movie Database a while ago (they've since been removed). I've updated the time frame as well.

I prefer to think of the characters as inhabiting an anime world and appearing as they do in the TV series. However, if you wish to picture them as being live-action, go right ahead. As for the voices, I'm picking the voice actors that I like best: Serena = Terri Hawkes, Amy = Karen Bernstein, Raye = Katie Griffin, Lita = Susan Roman, Mina = Stephanie Morgenstern, Darien = Toby Proctor, Rini = Stephanie Beard, and Julie Lemieux = Sammy. Luna has a young, American-sounding voice.

I wrote this story from Friday, November 8, 2002, 5:30 PM to Sunday, December 8, 2002, 1:14 PM and from Wednesday, August 13, 2003, 9:00 PM to Thursday, August 14, 2003, 12:25 AM. I updated it on Thursday, August 14, 2003, from 11:00 PM to 11:06 PM. Serena Campbell couldn't sleep.

She was still hyper after all of the snacks and soda that she had before she went to bed.

Serena got out of bed and walked over to the door. She closed it and walked over to her PC. She turned it on and turned the desk lamp on.

Luna, who was sleeping on Serena's bed, woke up and yawned. "Serena, what are you doing?"

Serena sat down in her computer chair and turned to face her cat. "Oh, sorry, Luna. Did I wake you?"

"No, I'm talking in my sleep." Luna said sarcastically. "Why are you up at this time of night?"

Serena smiled. "I can't sleep, so I've decided to try writing some songs."

"Songs?" Luna asked with a yawn.

"Yeah." Serena said. "Someday, I'm gonna be a rock star! I admit that my previous attempt with Molly didn't work out, but I bet that I can do better."

Luna scoffed and closed her eyes. "Do what you want. I'm going back to sleep."

After less than a minute, Luna was snoring.

Serena turned back to face the monitor. Windows had opened. Serena double-clicked on Notepad. Notepad opened. Serena started typing lyrics.

"Why'd you call us all over here, Serena?" Lita asked.

Lita Jenkins, Mina Tanner, Raye Hino, and Amy Anderson were sitting in Serena's living room.

Serena held up four sheets of paper. "I had an awesome idea last night! Wouldn't it be cool if we form a band and make an album?"

"Huh?" Raye asked in surprise.

"Sounds neat." Lita said with a smile.

Amy smiled, too. "Yes, it does sound interesting."

"I've always wanted to be a singer!" Mina exclaimed.

"Hang on." Raye said. "How do we know that you all can sing and play instruments?"

Serena hadn't thought of that. "Oh, um, well, we know you can, Raye. Let's go to my room and practice!"

Serena opened a sound-recording program on her computer and started recording. She placed the microphone in the middle of their semicircle.

"Okay, I'll start." Serena said. "We got the beat. We got the beat. We got the beat. Yeah, we got the beat! Raye?"

"I'd start a revolution, if I could get up in the morning." Raye sang.

Serena snickered. "Uh,...good, Raye. Lita."

"Standin' alone, I'm holdin' my own. Gonna show the world I'm the one." Lita sang. "I don't care what you think. I could kill you if you blink. No pretenders left when I'm done."

"Okaaay!" Serena interrupted. "That's...great, Lita. Mina?"

"You fuck me, then you leave. You sweat upon my sheets, and then you run, but I'm not done." Mina sang. "You tell me I'm the one just long enough to cum. You think I'm dumb. You think I'm dumb."

"Awesome, V-babe!" Serena praised. "Amy?"

"Gee, I'm afraid I don't know any daring, self-empowering songs like you guys." Amy said.

"That's okay, Amy." Serena said. "Sing anything."

"Okay." Amy said. "A new boy in the neighborhood lives downstairs, and it's understood he's there just to take good care of me, like he's one of the family. Charles in charge of our days and our nights, Charles in charge of our wrongs and our rights, and I see I want - I want Charles in charge of me. The other girls clapped.

"See, Ames?" Serena asked. "You're a great singer!"

Amy smiled.

"Okay, now we need to know which instruments we'll each play." Serena said.

Raye raised her right hand. "Synthesizer!"

"Good." Serena raised her right hand. "Drum programming!"

Lita raised her right hand. "Guitar!"

"Me, too!" Mina raised her right hand. "Guitar!"

Amy raised her right hand. "Um,...I can play the saxophone. Is that okay?"

Serena grinned. "One of my new songs calls for a sax! Definitely, Amy!"

Amy smiled.

Serena looked at all of them. "Okay, everybody, get your instruments, write your songs, and we'll meet back here in one week."

Saturday, October 25, 2003, 9:32 AM

Serena, Amy, Raye, Lita, and Mina were standing in Serena's bedroom.

"Has everybody got their songs?" Serena asked.

Raye held up her two sheets. "Here are mine."

"Okay, we know yours are good." Serena said. "Lita?"

Lita handed a sheet of paper to Serena.

Serena read the lyrics. "Nice. Is this about Ken?"

"Yeah." Lita replied.

Serena handed the sheet back to Lita. "Amy?"

Amy handed a sheet to Serena. "It's about when I was going to go to school in Germany."

Serena read the lyrics. "Very nice."

"Thank you, Serena." Amy said.

Serena handed the sheet back to Amy. "Mina?"

Mina looked embarrassed. "I couldn't come up with a good song."

"Oh, no." Serena said. "Well, do you want to adapt 'I Wanna Be A Star!' for yourself and sing it?"

Mina shook her head. "No, it's your song, Serena. You should sing it. Thanks, anyway. I'll figure something out on my own."

"Okay, let's record what we've got." Serena said. "We'll plug the instruments into my computer one at a time and record each instrument in a separate file. Then we'll record our vocals separately. Finally, we'll mix the tracks together to form the songs."

Suddenly, the door opened, and Serena's younger brother, Sammy, walked into the room, followed by Rini, Serena's daughter from the future.

"Hey! What are you guys doing in here?!" Rini asked.

"We're recording an album." Serena replied.

Sammy grinned. "Cool! We want in!"

"Yeah!" Rini demanded. "We're gonna be the next Scene 23!"

Serena scowled. "No way, ya little spore! Get out!"

"No!" Sammy and Rini yelled.

"Okay, I hate to resort to my Dawn Summers impersonation," Serena told them, "but get out, get out, get out!!!"

Sammy and Rini turned and ran out of the room. Rini slammed the door closed behind her.

Serena grinned. "I knew that would get rid of them. Let's get to work!"

Over the next six hours, between lunch, soda, snack, bathroom, and dinner breaks, the girls recorded their instruments.

"Okay, let's record our vocal tracks now." Serena said. "We'll do 'I Wanna Be A Star!' first. Last chance, Mina."

"I'll pass." Mina said.

"Good night, Serena." Amy, Raye, Lita, and Mina said.

"Good night, guys." Serena said.

Amy, Raye, Lita, and Mina left Serena's room.

Serena burned all of the WAV files to CDs and then got to work on mixing the songs.

Mina, Amy, Raye, and Lita walked into Serena's bedroom.

Lita closed the door behind her.

Mina held up a sheet of paper in excitement. "Serena, I wrote a song, and it's about you!"

Serena grinned. "Really?!"

"Like, fer sure!" Mina replied.

"Cool! Let's record the instruments, then you can sing it!"

For the next half-hour, the girls recorded their instruments.

"Got 'em down!" Serena exclaimed. "Okay, Mina, go for it!"

"You'll have to come up with something else, Mina." Serena told her.

Mina sighed. "I'll try."

Serena was sitting on her bed in her room, reading a comic book.

The phone rang.

Serena picked up the receiver. "Hello?"

"Serena?" Mina asked in a nasally voice.

"Mina, are you all right?" Serena asked her.

"No." Mina replied. "I caught a cold at school."

"Gee, that sucks." Serena said.

"I feel horrible." Mina told her. "I can't concentrate to write a new song, and, even if I do write one, I'm in no condition to sing it."

"Oh." Serena said.

"I'm sorry, Serena." Mina said.

"So am I. I know how much you wanted to be a part of this album." Serena replied. "Well, drink plenty of water, get plenty of rest, and feel better."

"Thank you, Serena." Mina told her. "Bye."

"Bye." Serena hung up the receiver.

There was a knock at the door.

"Come in." Serena said.

The door opened, and Lita walked into the room.

She closed the door behind her.

"Hi, Serena." Lita said.

"Hey, Lita." Serena replied sadly.

Lita frowned. "Hey, what's wrong?"

"It's Mina." Serena told her. "She caught a cold at school and doesn't feel well enough to write or sing a song."

"Aw, shit!" Lita exclaimed. "What are we gonna do now?!"

"I dunno." Serena replied.

Lita sat down on the bed.

The two girls were silent for a moment, deep in thought.

Lita clapped her left hand on Serena's right thigh. "That's it!"

Serena wailed. "What do you mean?!"

"I've got an awesome idea!" Lita exclaimed, fire in her eyes. "I'll see ya later, Serena!"

Lita stood up, ran over to the door, opened it, and ran out of the bedroom, closing the door behind her.

"What the hell was that about?" Serena wondered.

Saturday, November 1, 2003, 11:31 AM

Serena, Amy, Raye, and Mina arrived at a recording studio.

They each were wearing their Sailor Scout outfits.

"You were called here, too, guys?" Raye asked.

"Yup." Serena replied. "How ya feelin', Mina?"

"Better." Mina replied. "Still a little run down, though."

Serena held out a can. "Here, Mina, take my Rockstar Energy Drink. It's got a lot of vitamins in it, and it'll wake you up."

Mina took the can. "Thanks, Serena."

"I wonder what Lita called us here for." Amy said.

Mina snapped open the can and took a swig of the energy drink.

The door to the recording studio opened.

Lita stood there, wearing her Sailor Scout outfit. "Hey, girls! Glad you made it!"

"What's up, Lita?" Serena asked her.

"Yeah, why'd you call us over here?" Raye asked.

Lita smiled. "Follow me!"

The other girls walked into the recording studio and followed Lita into a room.

Mina closed the door behind her.

A man was standing in the room. He turned to face the girls.

"Mr. McGuire, the rest of the Sailor Scouts are here." Lita informed him.

"Great, Jupiter." Matt replied.

"Girls, this is Matt McGuire." Lita introduced.

Serena, Amy, Raye, and Mina all said hi.

"Hi." Matt said. He turned to face the man in the sound-proof room. "Okay, Stan, we're ready to lay down your vocals."

"Total Transformers hunk!" Serena exclaimed. "Jupiter, how'd you manage to convince Stan Bush to do a song for our album?!"

Lita smiled. "He's a huge fan of ours!"

"No shit?" Raye asked, surprised.

Stan smiled and waved at them. "Hi, girls!"

Serena, Amy, Raye, and Mina waved back at him. "Hi, Stan!"

"Okay, let's do it." Stan said.

Matt blocked off the sound from their room.

Matt let the sound from their room back into the sound-proof room.

"Well, what do you girls think?" Stan asked them.

"Wicked cool!" Serena exclaimed.

"I dunno." Raye said. "It's kinda repetitive."

Mina started snapping her fingers. "She's got the touch. She's got the power. Oops, wrong song."

"Yeah, exactly." Lita said. "It's too similar."

"Well, I cowrote the lyrics with Michael Benghait, who did the guitars, and Andy Heyward." Matt told them.

"Andy Heyward?" Lita asked.

"The Dick guy?" Serena asked.

"It's pronounced 'Deek', Meatball Head." Raye told her.

"Same thing as far as I'm concerned." Serena said.

"Destruction in Cartoons." Mina commented.

"Uh, they're publishing our album." Lita commented.

"What?!" Serena exclaimed.

"Rhino is releasing it." Lita added.

"You traitor!" Serena yelled, angry.

"I did the drum programming." Stan commented, trying to change the subject.

"Sailor Mercury, we'd like you to rewrite 'Only a Memory Away'." Matt told her.

"Why?" Amy asked.

"It just isn't working." Matt replied vaguely.

"Gee, I like it just the way it is, but okay."

After Amy had revised the lyrics and music, the other girls returned from home with their instruments - including Amy's saxophone.

They went into the sound-proof room and laid down the music.

Then the other girls left the room, and Amy sang the lyrics:

"That was good." Raye said.

"Too country." Lita said. "I like the original version better."

Just then, the door opened, and Rini barged in.

She slammed the door shut behind her.

"There you are!" Rini yelled, upset.

"Rini!" Serena exclaimed. She frowned. "How'd you know to find us here?!"

"I found Jupiter's message on your answering machine." Rini replied.

"Damn, I should have erased that." Serena muttered. "Well, what do you want?"

"I wrote a song about you for Venus to sing." Rini told her.

Serena held out her right hand. "Let's see it."

Rini offered the paper to Mina. "You read it, Venus."

Serena got angry.

Mina took the paper and looked over the lyrics and music. "Hey, this is good!"

Serena, Amy, Raye, and Lita gathered around Mina and looked at the lyrics.

"I like it," Raye said, "though it's pretty misleading and uncharacteristic of the true Sailor Moon."

"Shut up, Mars!" Serena yelled. "Are you up to performing it, V-babe?"

"Sure." Mina replied. "I feel much better."

"Okay." Serena said. "Let's record the instruments."

The girls spent the next half-hour laying down the music.

"Okay, girls." Serena said. "Let's leave the room and let Sailor V do her thing."

"It's a duet." Rini informed them. "I'm singing with Venus."

"What?!" Serena blurted. "No way!"

"Either I sing, or I won't give you permission to record my song." Rini told her.

"You little bitch!" Serena yelled. "I should never have you!"

"Easy, Moon." Mina told her. "It's okay. I'll do it."

"You sure?" Serena asked her.

Mina nodded.

"Okay." Serena agreed.

Serena, Amy, Raye, and Lita left the sound-proof room.

"Well?" Rini asked.

Serena, Amy, Raye, Lita, Stan, and Matt applauded.

Mina and Rini took bows.

"I love it!" Matt exclaimed. "It's going on the album as the lead-in song! We'll even edit it down into a shorter version to close out the album!"

"Eleven tracks." Raye said. "Not bad."

Serena, Amy, Raye, Lita, and Mina, wearing their Sailor Scout outfits, were sitting at a table in the local fye, autographing copies of their album for their fans.

Darien Phillips and Rini stood to their right, watching.

"Well, girls, looks like your album's doing pretty well." Darien commented.

"Yeah." Rini agreed. "Who woulda guessed?"

"Shut up!" Serena yelled at her.

Rini giggled.

"If this one does well, we might even record a second album." Lita said.

"Yeah, that would rule." Mina said.

"I don't know." Amy said. "Writing songs is hard for me, and I was pretty nervous performing."

Molly Baker was next in line. She handed her copy of the album to Serena, who autographed it and returned it to her.

Serena smiled. "I hope you enjoy it, Molly."

Molly was surprised. "You know my name?"

Serena panicked. "I, uh, I know everything!"

"The overstatement of the year." Darien whispered to Rini.

Rini smiled.

"I've got a question." Molly said. "The album booklet credits Sailor Moon with singing 'Call My Name (And I'll Be There)', but the promo poster for the album credits Sailor Mars with singing that song, and Sailor Mars is credited in the booklet with writing the song. I can't tell who's really singing it, but it makes no sense for Moon to sing it. What's the deal?"

"Let me listen." Raye said.

Molly handed the album and her portable CD player to Raye.

Raye unwrapped the jewel case and opened it. She opened the CD player, took the CD out of the jewel case, put the CD in the CD player, closed the CD player, put on the headphones, turned on the power, selected track 4, and pressed Play.

She listened for a while.

"What the fuck, Sailor Moon?!" Raye demanded.

Serena grew nervous. "I just thought it would be fun to sing the song. I had no idea they would actually use it on the album."

"Sure, you didn't!" Raye yelled back.

"Really!" Serena insisted.
