Act Two: Magic Games

Disclaimer: I do not own many of the spells I use. I borrowed them from Dungeons & Dragons, and other games. Please let it be noted that for this chapter I will use the Chrono Cross method of field effect with the addition of Violet: Illusion. Plus some of my own changes to spice up the fight scenes.

Physics and Orchestra glided by, but when Charsi stepped into the darkened hall that was her Advanced Magic class, fear arose. Geminite again, this was his class, and there would not be any rest for those who could not keep up.

“What ever happened to Kami-sama? I thought he decided to pull double this year?” Charsi muttered, trying to make sure that Geminite could not hear her.

“He's not teaching this class anymore. He is pulling double however, running the Mythology Dept.” One of her friends, Michira, said matter-of-factly, her finger twirling with her wavy, aqua hair. Michira snapped her eyes back to Charsi’s face from where her green orbs had previously been staring. Michira, as many knew, was one of the major ‘players’ in the lesbian crowd at SLA, and was her sister, Chibitaru’s, girlfriend. They haven’t told Nazz; much less Hotaru about themselves but Charsi thought that the time would come soon. Charsi glared at her, even though she knew she was joking, but never got to speak

“All right class we've got a lot to do and not as much time to do it in. So no time will be wasted on stupid questions.” Geminite said with a deep, uncaring voice as he swept himself into the room. As he entered the room darkened, as if a great shadow was saturated in the room. He stood tall, and very imposing at the head of the classroom, in front of a blackboard, that had once had formulae and other magical theory equations on them. With a wave of a hand, the board as well as his desk was gone and the floor had shifted from white tile, to a black hardwood, much like a dojo.

“Konbanwa, Sensei!” The class greeted him upon his arrival. This was tradition, plus it wouldn’t be bad to get on his good side. The freshmen that had taken the class were shuddering in their desks, and the seniors were trying to control their temptations to welcome the new Sensei with ‘Open arms’.

“Suck ups… I want you all to look to your left. Now to your right…behind you and in at least twelve other directions. At least forty percent of you will fail this class. Half of that will be because I simply don’t like you, so there will be no tolerance for anyone who falls from my esteem. First, I will explain the things I expect and will receive from this class. One: There are no bonus points. I do not want a bunch of cheesy reports on half-baked theory or obscure incantations. Magic is an art, not a science.” He paused for a minute, allowing the students to collect themselves from his blistering delivery.

“Two: I don’t care what is wrong with your relationship or if you need to see the counselor, if you’re the SGA president and have to be at a presentation, if you have Marching Band or other things. There will be no leaving this class. Unless you lie bleeding, about to turn black in the face, pass out, and die on my floor, or I tell you get out, you will not be allowed to leave. No passes to come in here after hours, either. I have places to go as well, probably more important that you pitiful rejects do. Three: I am the law, and if you break that law, there will be consequences. In this room, you are in Hell, and I am your keeper. If I say up is down and day is night, it will be so, and when I tell you to do something. Do it, with no question. Now is that clear enough for the likes or you, or do I have to put this in other words for the feebly invalid? No, then get up out of your desks and stand against the wall.”

Everyone stood up and Geminite brushed his hand once more. Instantly desks started vanishing every which way and everyone was against a wall. The fear that the freshmen emanated before hand was now shared by their upperclassmen.

“Now, we’re supposed to start with a bunch of theory, simple spells, mana gathering excersises that will last about two weeks, which is a bunch of shit, and you should know that anyway. How about we do something a little more contesting? Time for the Aptitude Test aka Magic Fight!” Geminite finished.

Now this was easily going to be Charsi's favorite class. During the mercenary job Nazz had taught her basics of attack, illusion, and status magics. She also studied golems, and was very proficient in this task.

“Don’t think that this course will be all fun and fighting. There will be order and a disciplinary report will be filed against any cheaters, whiners, and gun jumpers. Sometimes the losers will be written up as well, if I feel that they have been just, completely incompetent. Now there will be three broadcasted battles, so step to the side if you don’t like publicity.” Geminite entoned as several students stepped to the sides of the room. He looked for a minute and chose three pairs. “Well, have a little fun here… Li Vs. Kokoro…Hmmm. Ahh, yes. Cortana Vs. Seiji, and You Vs. The Glowstick.” He finished.

“Sir, my name is not Glowstick! It’s Kashya.” Kashya stated indignantly. She was the racial opposite of her teacher, who was supposed to be a Dominarian-the people of the Prime Negative Plane-while she was a Stratton-the resident race of the Prime Positive Plane.

“As long as you are in this room, you’re a damn Glowstick if I say so. Places!” Geminite commanded as the rest of the combatants took their positions. The other students laughed a bit at his quip.

“That remark is beneath notice!”

“Don’t notice it then. Now, get to your place!”

“No. I think I rather like it right here.”

Geminite raised his arm back, in preparation to blast the offensive student into total oblivion. He paused and then lowered his arm. She would be important later on, plus Kami wouldn’t like for his daughter to be obliterated.

“Fine Keyshyeh, hold your tongue and get to your place. We run a tight schedule, here, miss.” He growled at Kashya as she moved to where she was in front of Charsi.

“Well, this should be a short and not to mention, light contest.” Charsi scoffed at her friend. Charsi had known Kashya for a while, since she moved to Earth from her home plane of Stratta.

“Watch it, bitch.” Kashya retorted.

Girls…There will be time for foreplay later. Take your places, now!” Geminite cast at them. He waved his hand yet again and three large screens appeared on the wall behind him.

The three pairs stepped into circles of light. The circles shimmered, and the combatants winked out and appeared on the screens, in blank grey arenas. There were blue numbers at the bottom left and bottom right, that were under the words “Mana Count”, representing the magical capacity of the fighters. There were also seven grey bars at the top, representing the elemental alignment of the area.

“As you can see, all mana counts have been set to 100. For any imbecile who doesn’t know what a mana count is, one, you should be with the General Magic group, and two, it is the energy limit that you have to cast spells with. Each opponent can only use magic in this contest. If a physical skill is used, then the offender will be subject to a consequence free strike against them. Now, for a field change, Pyrofield!” Geminite said, once again waving his hand.

The stadium changed abruptly into a fire filled room with a single path of solid ground which at each end the where combatants stood. The veiwscreen had developed a film of glare from the intense heat.

“The field will only change once seven spells of the same type have been cast in a row. Disabling your opposition is allowed. Okay… 3... 2... 1... Let’s Jam!” He ended with a flash.

With the flames distorting the light with the heat, Charsi thought to cool things down a bit. She didn’t know that many Ice spells, but she could throw down with some water and status magics…

Aqua Beam.” Charsi cast at Kashya. She was far enough away to do no damage, but give her foe a light misting. Kashya readily complied with a Water Spray spell. But the water heated increasingly, sending steam to cloud Charsi’s vision. They started to volley water spells at each other, on the seventh spell. The field effect changed abruptly causing mana burn to both girls. Now, they simply stood on two pillars and the rest of the arena was an enormous sea. Charsi saw an opening as Kashya started gathering her Mana.

Windslash!” she said as she hurled a cyclone of bladed wind at her foe. Kashya was knocked off of her pillar. She landed with a splash, with the area where she landed glowing with her genetic halo. She remained submerged for a full thirty seconds before she swam to the top, dripping with water. Her uniform soaked, she clambered onto her pillar and readied for a spell.

Holy Word!” She shouted as she threw her right hand out and then brought it down in a swift, rigid motion. The spititual energy ripped through the arena and sent Charsi flying from her pillar. She managed to pull out her wings and fly back to it before she became as waterlogged as Kashya. She paused for a moment, getting her berrings. The Mana count was Kashya: 67-Charsi: 44. There were five blue bars, a green bar and a white bar at the top of the viewscreen.

“Sensei, may we have partners in this battle?” Charsi asked Geminite with heavy breathing.

“What, is the lizard too tired… Ha, yes, let’s make this a multifight.” He replied as he sent in two students, who’s pillars rose out of the water and they materialized on them. Shard, a Dominarian student, appeared beside Kashya, and Michira appeared beside Charsi. The fight continued with Shard’s Raigeki tech, and Kashya followed with a Misdirection to Michira’s Id Insinuation-a psionic technique. The volley continued for a while, when the field suddenly changed to a chaotic landscape with floating pools of red, green, and blue. The field had changed to Chaos, which increased Shard and Michira’s powers three fold.

The Mana Count had dwindeled to Charsi: 10, Michira: 50, Shard: 90, and Kashya: 15. They had been fighitng for over an hour and a half. The period was almost over, just thirty minutes to go…

Shard looked up at the others, he could take them all out, and gain superior recognition… He raised his hand, laughing with a voice that sounded as a fanatical preist making a sacrifice…

Zier, zombar, Zike, zom. Servants of the Shadow, come, serve thy master. Summon my allies: Hyderra, Krakken, Millian, Lichtesa. The Four Fiends, I command thee!” Shard shouted at the top of his lungs. The four spirits appeared in the chaotic arena. Unfortunately, Shard couldn’t controll them in their amplyfied state. They wrested free from Shard’s imprisonment image-You MUST keep the spirit in an image you create, if they get free, they will turn on you. Their true forms were nothing but gas. Michira acted quickly, “Mind Crush!” she cast at the four, and instantly they were gone. The effect wasn’t just at the spirits; however, everyone else in the arena had been hit as well, Shard had fallen donw on his pillar, shaking. Kashya was holding her head, and Charsi’s ears and eyes were dripping blood. Kashya’s aura fired up as she started to rise in the air, levitating on her own holy power.

Divine Hammer, Holy Word, Holy SHOUT, Force Wall!” She cast at the rest of them, but Charsi was already charging for something… But the rest of the combatants had been forced out of the arena, due to damage. Charsi raised her hands and thrust them out at Kashya.

Triumvirate Attack: Pandemonium” Charsi screamed as the etherial, chaotic energy ripped through Kashya. She was weak to Chaos, being Law alligned. They both appeared back in the classroom, to a standing ovation. Geminte stepped forward from the group, and the rest of the class fell into silence.

Most impressive. I look forward to our next class. Your level is higher than I expected from a lizard and a damn glowstick. And Charsi, tell your father to stop by my office after the day is over.” Geminite stated. He was impressed that the two had so much power-and that is saying a lot.

“It’s time to go, Sensei….” Aeris said meekly.

“Curb your yammering skullcave, girl. I will say when it is time to go… Class dissmised, and the last one out has detentions!” Geminite shouted as the class left the room, “And then there was one…” He finished as he faded into the shadows, becoming a part of them.
