"Lunarock"

Author's note: This story is based on the "Sailor Moon & The Scouts: Lunarock" soundtrack album. It occurs after the English-dubbed episode, "Follow the Leader" (Japanese episode 89).

Some anime purists that are reading this may hate that I'm Americanizing the series, but I have to. I don't know enough about Japanese culture or geography to set it in Japan. Also, I prefer the North American character names over the Japanese character names. The girls live in San Fernando, California, thus explaining Serena's accent and dialect. I've also given the characters American last names, which I had discovered at the Internet Movie Database a while ago (they've since been removed). I've updated the time frame as well.

I prefer to think of the characters as inhabiting an anime world and appearing as they do in the TV series. However, if you wish to picture them as being live-action, go right ahead. As for the voices, I'm picking the voice actors that I like best: Serena = Terri Hawkes, Amy = Karen Bernstein, Raye = Katie Griffin, Lita = Susan Roman, Mina = Stephanie Morgenstern, and Darien = Toby Proctor. Luna has a young, American-sounding voice.

I wrote this story on Monday, March 29, 2004, from 8:00 PM to 10:15 PM; from Sunday, July 18, 2004, 8:30 PM to Tuesday, August 3, 2004, 8:25 PM; and from Monday, February 21, 2005, 7:00 PM to Tuesday, March 29, 2005, 9:45 PM. Serena Campbell couldn't sleep.

She was still hyper after all of the snacks and soda that she had before she went to bed, and she was still pumped from her battle against Wiseman.

Serena got out of bed and walked over to the door. She closed it and walked over to her PC. She turned it on and turned the desk lamp on.

Luna, who was sleeping on Serena's bed, woke up and yawned. "Serena, do you have any idea what time it is?"

Serena sat down in her computer chair and turned to face her cat. "It's Serena-can't-sleep time, so I'm gonna try writing some more songs."

Luna yawned. "Not this again."

Serena frowned. "Hey, if you don't like it, shut up and go back to sleep."

Luna closed her eyes. "Hmph."

After less than a minute, Luna was snoring.

Serena turned back to face the monitor. Windows had opened. Serena double-clicked on Notepad. Notepad opened. Serena started typing lyrics.

The doorbell rang.

Serena walked over to the front door, unlocked it, and opened it.

Lita Jenkins, Mina Tanner, Raye Hino, and Amy Anderson walked in Serena's living room, saying hi to Serena as they passed her.

Serena closed the door and locked it.

The five girls went and sat on the couches in the living room.

"Thanks for coming over, gang." Serena held up three sheets of paper. "Ta-da! I wrote three new songs last night! Well, I actually wrote two new songs and adapted an existing song, Anyway, take a look."

The other girls took the sheets of paper, trading them with each other occasionally until each of them had read all three songs.

Mina smiled. "Wow! These are awesome, Serena!"

Lita smiled. "Yeah, definitely!"

Amy smiled, too. "I like them, too."

Raye smiled, too. "Yeah."

Serena grinned. "All right! I'm glad you like them! Three songs aren't enough for an album, so, if you each could come up with at least one more, that'd be awesome!"

"Okay." Amy, Raye, Lita, and Mina agreed.

Serena grinned. "Great! What should we call it?"

The girls thought for a moment.

"'Smart Songs'?" Amy suggested.

"With Serena writing some of the songs, it would be a misleading title." Raye said.

"Shut up." Serena said. "Next?"

"'Scouts On Fire'?" Raye suggested.

"Too generic." Serena said. "Next?"

"'We Kick Ass'?" Lita suggested.

Serena chuckled. "Next."

"'The Power of Love'?" Mina suggested.

"Mmm, that's catchy, but how do we know that all of the songs will be about love?" Serena asked.

"You've got a good point." Mina admitted.

"How about 'Lunarock'?" Serena suggested.

"Yeah!" Venus praised.

"Awesome!" Lita praised.

Raye smiled. "I like it."

"So do I." Amy said. "Did you get the name from 'lunar rock' or from 'Luna' and 'rock'?"

"Both at the same time, really." Serena smiled. "I'm glad that you all like it."

The girls shared a silent moment, smiling at each other.

Serena looked at all of them. "Okay, everybody, get your instruments, write your songs, and we'll meet back here in one week."

Serena, Amy, Raye, Lita, and Mina were standing in Serena's bedroom.

"Has everybody got their songs?" Serena asked.

Raye handed a sheet of paper to Serena. "Here's mine."

Serena read the lyrics. "Nice. Is this about me?"

"Yeah." Raye replied.

Serena handed the sheet back to Raye. "Lita?"

Lita handed a sheet of paper to Serena.

Serena read the lyrics. "Nice, but...you don't have a father, Lita."

Lita smiled. "It's nice to dream."

Serena handed the sheet back to Lita. "Amy?"

Amy looked embarrassed. "I couldn't come up with a good song. May we put the original version of 'Only a Memory Away' on our new album?"

"I don't see why not." Serena replied.

"Thank you, Serena." Amy said.

"Mina?" Serena asked.

Mina looked embarrassed. "I couldn't come up with a good song either."

"Oh, no." Serena said. "Well, do you want to cover another song?"

"I don't know." Mina replied. "I'll figure something out on my own."

"Okay, let's record what we've got." Serena said. "We'll plug the instruments into my computer one at a time and record each instrument in a separate file. Then we'll record our vocals separately. Finally, we'll mix the tracks together to form the songs. Let's get to work!"

Over the next six hours, between lunch, soda, snack, bathroom, and dinner breaks, the girls recorded their instruments.

"Okay, let's record our vocal tracks now." Serena said. "We'll do 'The Power of Love' first."

"Okay." Amy, Raye, Lita, and Mina agreed.

"Yes. I'm shy when it comes to singing. I'll be represented by the original version of 'Only a Memory Away'."

"Okay." Serena said.

"I'll sit this one out, too, Serena." Mina said.

"You sure, V-Babe?" Serena asked her.

"Yeah." Mina replied. "I want to come up with something on my own."

Serena shrugged. "Okay. Don't come crying to me later."

Serena gave her a smile. "Let's see, we've got...five songs. That's not enough for a standard album. If we add in 'Only a Memory Away', that would be six songs. We need something more."

"I'll get to work on a song tomorrow." Mina promised.

Serena smiled. "Great! I'll get to work on mixing these songs. You can leave your instruments here, if you want."

"Good night, Serena." Amy, Raye, Lita, and Mina said.

"Good night, guys." Serena said.

Amy, Raye, Lita, and Mina left Serena's room.

Serena burned all of the WAV files to CDs and then got to work on mixing the songs.

Serena sat on her bed in her room, picked up the telephone receiver, and dialed Raye's home telephone number.

The telephone rang three times.

"Hello?" Raye asked.

"Hey, Raye, it's me." Serena said.

"Hey." Raye said. "What's up?"

"Well, I was just thinking." Serena said.

"Really?" Raye asked. "This is an event!"

"Shut up." Serena said.

Raye giggled.

"Anyway, Mina might not get a song written, so maybe we should write some more songs to fill the album." Serena suggested.

"I was thinking the same thing." Raye said. "How about a duet?"

"Hey, awesome idea!" Serena exclaimed.

"I'll be right over." Raye said.

There was a knock at Serena's bedroom door.

"Come in!" Serena called.

The door opened, and Raye walked into the room.

"Hey, Raye." Serena said.

"Hey, Serena." Raye said.

Raye closed the door.

Serena was sitting at her computer. Raye picked up Serena's desk chair, brought it over, set it down, and sat to Serena's right.

"I've already got Notepad open." Serena said.

"I admire your preparation." Raye said sarcastically.

"Oh, and I suppose you've come up with a topic for our song?" Serena asked her.

"Well, I, uh - "

"Uh-huh. That's what I thought." Serena said smugly.

"Fuck you." Raye said.

Serena grinned in excitement. "That's it! You've given me an idea for our song!"

"Huh?" Raye asked in confusion.

There was a knock at the door.

"Come in!" Serena called.

The door opened, and Mina, Amy, and Lita walked into Serena's bedroom.

Lita closed the door behind her.

"Sorry, Serena, I wasn't able to come up with a song." Mina said.

Serena grinned. "That's okay! Raye and I prepared for that eventuality and cowrote a song."

"Awesome!" Mina exclaimed. "Hey, what do you mean by 'eventuality'?!"

Serena ignored her. "Let's record the instruments, then we can sing it!"

For the next half-hour, the girls recorded their instruments.

"Got 'em down!" Serena exclaimed.

"Great." Raye said. "Now, we can record our vocals."

"Hey, what's your song called?" Mina asked.

"Our song is called 'Who Do You Think You Are'!" Serena replied.

"Ha! Well, I should be, 'cause you're such a Meatball Head!" Raye yelled back at Serena.

"Oh, yeah? I've gotten you out of plenty of messes before!" Serena yelled.

Raye chuckled. "That's nothing compared to mess you make when you eat!"

"I do not!"

"Do, too!"

"Well, I'm the leader, and that's that!" Serena yelled.

"Well, why should I listen to a ditz like you?!" Raye demanded.

"Well, maybe because I'm Sailor Moon, champion of love and justice."

Raye chuckled. "Well, all I know is you must be wearing your ponytails too tight!"

Mina started laughing.

"What's so funny?" Serena asked.

"You two." Mina replied. "You're both still arguing over who's gonna be the leader. We should add that argument at the end of the song."

Serena and Raye smiled. "Yeah!"

"That's still only seven songs." Amy pointed out.

"Yeah, what do we do?" Lita asked.

"We'll have to come up with something else." Serena told them.

Mina sighed. "I'll try."

Serena was sitting on her bed in her room, reading a comic book.

There was a knock at the door.

"Come in." Serena said.

The door opened, and Lita and Mina walked into the room.

Mina closed the door behind her.

"Hi, Serena." Lita and Mina said.

"Hey, Lita. Hey, Mina." Serena replied.

"Well, I haven't been able to come up with a new song." Mina said.

"I'm, like, totally surprised." Serena said sarcastically.

Lita grinned. "However, I'm come up with a solution!"

"Oh, yeah?" Serena asked.

"Songs inspired by the Sailor Scouts!" Lita took an MP3 player out of her front right pants pocket. "I found some! Have a listen!"

Serena put down her comic book, stood up, walked over to her computer, and unplugged her speakers.

Lita and Mina walked over to her.

Serena plugged her computer speakers into Lita's MP3 player and turned them on.

"The first is 'Moonlight Densetsu' by a Japanese singer named DALI." Lita told Serena. "It means 'Moonlight Legend'."

"It uses the same tune from my 'Sailor Moon Theme' song." Mina added.

Lita pressed the Play button.

"Um,...there might be." Lita said. "May I?"

"Go ahead." Serena said.

Lita sat in Serena's computer chair, set her MP3 player down, and opened Internet Explorer.

"I should probably find the lyrics on a Japanese Sailor Scouts fan site." Lita said.

Lita started searching.

"What's taking so long?" Serena demanded.

"Fuck you." Lita said. "I can't read Japanese."

"Me either." Mina said. "It's nothing but symbols."

Serena and Mina continued to wait while Lita searched the Internet.

"Bingo." Lita said.

"Read the translations." Serena said.

"'I'm sorry, but I cannot tell. I can only tell you within a dream. Before my nerves become shorted, I wish to meet with you now. It seems to be crying, the moonlight. Since I cannot telephone past midnight, I do not know what to do with the love of you. My heart is a kaleidoscope. The moon's light will guide me, so that I can once again meet you. Serena smiled. "Aw, how sweet."

Although I want to have that sweet dream, I cannot allow it, and it's all because of them! As I'd expected, I'll just have to do it; won't I? I must smash them and, with my own hands, destroy the evil! I must keep at it until the job is done! Awaken, blue soldier! No matter how bad a person is said to be, if you love them, you try to believe in them. But taking advantage of that love this way, that, they cannot do! "Awesome!" Serena exclaimed.

Serena, Amy, Raye, Lita, and Mina arrived at Matt's office.

They each were wearing their Sailor Scout outfits.

Lita knocked on the door.

"Who is it?" Matt asked.

"The Sailor Scouts." Jupiter replied.

"Come in." Matt invited.

Lita opened the door, and she, Serena, Amy, Raye, and Mina walked into the office. Mina closed the door behind her.

Matt was sitting at his desk. "Welcome, Scouts. I hope this meeting isn't at a bad time. You girls didn't happen to be fighting evil by moonlight; were you?"

The girls exchanged glances with each other.

"It's the middle of the day." Raye told him.

"It was a joke." Matt told them.

The girls remained silent.

Matt cleared his throat. "Anyway, the songs are great, and we got Michael Jackson's permission to use your cover of 'I Want To Hold Your Hand'. It was easy. He needs the money right now. We also got permission to include the Japanese songs. However, we're going to leave 'Only a Memory Away' off of the album."

"What?" Amy asked in surprise. "Why?!"

"It's redundant, since it appeared on the first album." Matt replied.

"But that was the new version that you had me record." Amy told him. "This is the original version."

"Uh-uh-uh, I don't wanna hear it." Matt said.

"That leaves only eight tracks." Serena said. "It seems rather short for an album."

"Heck, 'Mortal Kombat: The Album' had more tracks." Mina said.

"I wonder if we can come up with another song to cover quickly." Lita said.

"No, eight tracks is fine." Matt said. "One thing: since 'I Want Someone To Love' is about Sailor Moon's love for Tuxedo Mask, I've asked him to provide some vocals to mix into the song."

Serena was surprised. "Is he a good singer?"

"He's gonna record in a few minutes." Matt said. "Come and hear him for yourselves."

Matt, Serena, Amy, Raye, Lita, and Mina walked into the recording studio.

Matt pressed a button on the console and looked at the man in the sound-proof room. "Okay, Tuxedo Mask, we're ready to lay down your vocals. The Sailor Scouts are hear to listen."

Darien Phillips, wearing his Tuxedo Mask outfit, was standing in the sound-proof room.

Darien waved. "Hi, girls!"

The girls waved back at him. "Hi, Tuxedo Mask!"

"Okay, let's do it." Darien said.

Matt pressed some buttons on the console to start the playback and recording and then blocked off the sound from their room.

Darien occasionally said "Go" and "Here we go" in a deep voice.

Matt pressed some buttons on the console to stop the playback and recording and then pressed another button.

"Great job, Tuxedo Mask." Matt said.

"Thanks." Darien replied.

"What the hell was that?" Serena asked Matt. "Tuxedo Mask added absolutely nothing to the song."

"Oh, but he did." Matt told her. "His voice is raw, and girls love raw voices."

"What?" Serena asked in confusion.

"American girls more than Canadian girls, so we'll include less of his vocals on the Canadian release of the album and more on the American release."

"Huh?" Serena asked, becoming even more confused.

Matt now had an evil look on his face. "We'll even have a different mix of 'I Want To Hold Your Hand' on the American release than on the Canadian release. We'll put the breakdown up-front here in America. I might even put out an EP with six mixes of the song."

"This is ridiculous." Serena muttered.

Darien opened the door and walked out of the sound-proof room. He closed the door behind him.

He walked over to Serena. "Hey, Meatball Head."

Serena couldn't think of what to say. She held her hands palms-up in front of herself and shook them while trying to think of something appropriate to say. Serena finally settled on "What the fuck?"

"Huh?" Darien asked in confusion.

The girls and Darien were standing in Matt's office.

Matt was sitting in his chair.

"Please listen to what we're saying, Mr. McGuire." Amy pleaded.

"This is outrageous - and not in a 'Jem' way!" Serena yelled. "You're choosing which tracks are going on our album!"

"I tell you what." Matt said. "You can choose the album cover and the pictures that will go in the booklet."

"Oh, yeah, big whoop." Lita said.

"Fuck that." Mina said.

"How lame." Raye said.

"Take it or leave it." Matt said.

"We'll take it." Serena growled.

Serena, Amy, Raye, Lita, Mina, and Darien turned and walked over to the door. Serena opened it and stormed outside, followed by Amy, Raye, Lita, Mina, and Darien. Darien closed the door behind him.

"Those are some real bargaining skills that you've got there, Serena." Darien said.

"Not another word out of you!" Serena demanded.

Serena, Amy, Raye, Lita, and Mina were sitting on the floor in Serena's living room.

There were a lot of photographs spread across the floor.

The girls were examining each of them and considering them carefully.

"How about this one for the cover?" Serena held up a photo and showed it to the other girls. "It's us in a group pose."

"Do we really want to use a group pose?" Raye asked. "Amy and Mina aren't represented on the album."

"Let's let them decide." Serena told her.

"I'm okay with it." Amy said.

"So am I." Mina said.

"Then it's settled." Serena said. "This will be our cover: all of us displayed on an album that, although flawed, we can stand by and be proud of."

Serena, Amy, Raye, Lita, Mina, and Darien were sitting at a table in the local Sam Goody, autographing copies of their album for their fans. The girls were wearing their Sailor Scout outfits, and Darien was wearing his Tuxedo Mask outfit.

"Well, girls, looks like our album's doing pretty well." Darien commented.

"What do you mean by 'our album'?" Serena asked him.

"If this one does well, we might even record a third album." Raye said.

Molly Baker was next in line. She handed her copy of the album to Serena, who autographed it and returned it to her.

Serena smiled. "I hope you enjoy it, Molly."

Molly smiled. "I'm sure I will. I've got a question. Who came up with the name, 'Lunarock'?"

"I did." Serena replied.

"I like it." Molly said.

"Thanks." Serena leaned close to her. "Oh, I apologize in advance for Tuxedo Mask's horrible vocals on 'I Want Someone To Love'. You'll see what I mean."

"What was that?" Darien demanded.

Serena panicked. "Oh, nothing!"

"Yeah, right!" Darien yelled.

"Really!" Serena insisted. "Just chillax; will ya?!"
