Sailor Moon Fan Fiction ❯ Perfect Flaw ❯ Partners... ( Chapter 1 )

[ T - Teen: Not suitable for readers under 13 ]

Okay, some people wanted a sequel to my fic Flawed, so I wrote a sort of spin off. It's not as dark, and will be different, much different, though it's in the same setting. I think that's all, aside from the usual disclaimer, I don't own anything.

Tsukino Usagi stood in front of a small convenience store, appearing to wait for someone. She was female, and appeared to be about eighteen, though there was something strange about her crimson eyes, something almost unnerving that belied the youth her face shone with. Long bangs brushed against her cheeks and fell in her vision, though she had long since given up trying to brush them away. The rest of it was pulled back in a hasty braid that fell to where her shoulder blades met. It shone bright in the midmorning sun, reminding those who glanced at her of cherry blossoms, and their thoughts turned to warm spring days that awaited them, after the long cold winter that they now endured.

She was dressed peculiarly for the cold weather, her coat hanging open and her legs bare, not wearing stockings under her short skirt.

She watched the people walk by, studying each one intently with her strange eyes. Her hands were shoved casually in her pockets as she waited. `Ten twelve, three minutes before the baka's late.' She thought silently, checking the clock on the bank building across the street.

She actually didn't know the person she was to meet. She didn't even know if they were male or female. What she did know was that whoever this person was, she was going to hate them. Why, because this person was to be her partner.

Usagi hated partners. She worked alone.

`Ten fourteen, one minute,' she thought, checking the clock again. More and more people walked by, not seeming to notice her. She noticed all of them though. Each person that walked by, she noticed. She glanced at them, and in an instant, had memorized there outward appearance, and begun to analyze what was inward, by watching the short series of actions she would witness as they walked by. It was something she had been trained to do.

That's all life was, training. Preparation for the next step.

A man she hadn't noticed before, now stood beside her, staring into the crowds as she did, his hands shoved into his pants pockets as well. She glanced at him from the corner of her eyes, not turning her head.

`Ten fifteen.'

"The weather today is nice." The man spoke up.

"It will rain tomorrow." She replied, still staring ahead.

"Then I shall have to remember my umbrella."

Her fingers loosened their grip on the leather handle of a dagger inside her pocket, though she still held the weapon. She nodded slightly, turning to him. "Tsukino Usagi," was all she said, and she walked towards a car that was parked along the curb. She got in the driver's side, and turned the ignition.

The man followed her, getting in on the passenger's side. "Trunks Briefs," he returned.

--------------------------------

The car ride was reasonably silent, Usagi drove, her eyes seemingly glued to the road, though at times she would glance at her new partner through the corner of her eye. She noticed he was doing the same, as he gave her the directions on how to get to the apartment they would be sharing.

That was how everything worked. With partners, the knowledge of the mission was split, that way if one was captured, they would know nothing of what the other was doing. Usagi had had the car, Trunks had known the directions to the apartment, and had the key. Usagi had her list of targets, and she was sure he had his.

"Turn right," he said. She did so, dropping her speed down to fifty before accelerating back up to seventy moments later. He didn't seem to notice. "Where are you from?" he asked, trying to make conversation.

"Tokyo, 3009, A.D." she replied, not taking her eyes off the road. She was constantly alert when she drove, her eyes either glancing in her mirrors or on the road, never at her speedometer though. She was always accelerating or braking, turning the wheel, shifting gears. All of her senses were working continuously, more so than a normal person's would. Just in case.

That was the way Usagi's mind worked. Just in case.

"And you?" she asked, though she didn't really care.

"West Capitol, year 784," he replied. "Turn left and pull into the driveway,"

"Hnn," was all she said as she turned into the parking lot of a dingy apartment building. Her boss never was one to spoil her employees.

---------------------------------------

Later that night, Usagi entered a small dark tavern, dressed in a black dress that made several men sit up straighter. She paid them no attention though as she sat down in a booth across from a man who looked to be not much older than herself, with brown hair, his bangs so long they fell in front of his cobalt eyes that seemed to sparkle with mischief.

"Konban wa," she said. "Do you have what I asked for?"

The man smiled. "Hai," he slid a large envelop across the table to her.

She opened it, shuffling through the photos quickly. "Any other information?"

"He's been invited to a large cocktail party tomorrow night, and I'm sure he'll be attending." He passed her another slip of paper. "That's the address and the time."

"Good," she said, glancing at the note.

"So where's my money?" he asked, cutting to the chase. "Or do I get something else?" he winked suggestively.

Usagi rolled her eyes. "That's not my problem, take it up with Setsuna,"

"I'd rather get paid by a babe like you instead of that woman," he shivered slightly at the last part. "I don't know how you could have stood growing up with her,"

Usagi gave him a sharp look, and he stopped shivering.

"Well, I guess it does explain a few things, " he said with a grin.

Usagi closed the envelope and placed it in her coat pocket, along with the note. She stood. "Arigatou, I'll be seeing you soon,"

"Next time we go somewhere nice for dinner, okay gorgeous?" he said with a wink.

Usagi didn't appear to hear him as she exited the bar.
