PRETTY CRAZY
By Sailor DKC

On the moon, in the castle…

As the dancers glided across the ballroom floor, Lita and Nephlite
stared at each other as if trying to figure each other out. The music
ended, and the applause afterwards snapped them both back to reality.
Blushing, they averted their eyes here and there. As the music
started up again, Nephlite cleared his throat. “I believe we should
have another dance, Lady Lita.”
Nodding, the Jupiterian princess placed her hand on his offered arm.
“Yes. Let us dance.” On the dance floor, they moved like robots,
keeping their distance from each other at an arm’s length. They did
not look at each other, but rather look over the other’s shoulder.
As they danced, both were in deep thought.

‘I don’t believe it!’ Lita thought in bewilderment. ‘Nephlite is the
Earth man that Princess Serena is secretly seeing? It doesn’t make
any sense.’ She made a sad face. ‘But then why did he go under the
staircase unless she told him that’s where her letter will be.’ Then
she made a silent sigh of resignation. ‘Who am I kidding? I’m just
probably a stand-in for her. It was the same with that other guy I
was involved with.’
Nephlite grinded his teeth as he concentrated not to grab hold of
Lita by the shoulders and demand that she is not the lady of the Moon
with whom Prince Darien had been seeing. ‘How can this be?’ he
thought in shock. ‘Her first kiss was with me. I know it! The way she
kissed me I could tell that no man has yet touched her lips.’ Letting
out a frustrated breath, he swung Lita around. ‘But I saw her pocket
the envelope when she came from under the staircase. The only person
who knew about it would be the lady whom my prince is secretly
seeing!’

The music stopped, and Lita and Nephlite withdrew from each other and
clapped unenthusiastically with the rest of the other dancers. A new
piece started just as Lita saw Princess Serenity, a.k.a. Serena,
across the ballroom, gesturing her to come over. She faced Nephlite.
“Um, Lord Nephlite, your lov-, I mean, my princess needs my services!
Will you please excuse me?”
Nephlite nodded, calmly, his fists tightening. “Of course, Lady Lita.
I also have matters to attend to your lov-, I mean, my prince! So, by
your leave.”
As they went in opposite directions, Lita struggled hard not to let
tears spill from her eyes while Nephlite breathed harshly so he would
not shout out in anger.

Serena grasped Lita’s hand as she approached her and whispered, “Did
you get it?” Nodding sadly, Lita reached in her concealed pocket and
took out the letter. The Moon princess then pulled her friend out
onto the balcony nearby. As the princess of Jupiter gave her the
letter, her heart broke as Serena squealed while she opened it. “Keep
an eye out so nobody will walk in on us!”
As Lita kept watched, she snuck glances at her princess. She was
making expressions of sighs, smiles and eyes closing as she read the
letter. When she kissed it and pressed it to her heart, Lita turned
away quickly and shut her eyes tight, forcing a tear to slip out and
slid down her cheek. Finishing the letter, Serena put the letter
away. “Oh, Lita! I’m so happy! He wants to profess our love to each
other!”
Quickly wiping away the tear, Lita whirled to look at her, eyes
widening. “The man from Earth whom you’ve been seeing?”

“Yes!” Quickly, creating a note and pen from Moon magic, Serena wrote
quickly on the note. When she finished, she made the pen disappear
and folded the note. Placing the note in her friend’s hand, she said,
“Now you’ll give it to him so he can meet me here.”
“But I can’t give this to him!” protested Lita.
“Huh?” Serena said, puzzled. “Oh, that’s right! You haven’t met him
yet. Come here.”
They returned to the ballroom, and Serena scanned the room. “Look!”
She pointed to where Prince Endymion, a.k.a. Darien, and Nephlite
were in conversation. “There is his companion, General Nephrite. My
love said to send a reply through him. He’ll know what to do. In my
note, I wrote that you will lead him to where my love and I will
meet.”
‘Very clever,’ Lita thought, sadly. ‘She still won’t tell me who it
is, but it doesn’t matter. I know who he is.’ Bowing before her
princess, she said, “I will do as you say because I want you to be
happy.” Then she headed into the ballroom towards the two men.

Nephlite came up to the prince as he was conversing with Queen
Serenity. “Begging your Highness’ pardon,” he said. “but may I have a
word with you?”
Darien nodded and turned to the Queen of the Moon Kingdom. “If you
will excuse me, your Majesty?” The queen nodded, then turned when
other Moon officials requested her attention. The prince and his
general retreated to a corner, and Nephlite gave Darien the envelope.
Taking a deep breath of anticipation, Darien opened the letter and
read it. As he did, a grin began to spread on his face. Noticing
this, Nephlite felt the anger in him, boiling up. As the prince held
the letter up to his lips and kissed it, the general turned away with
a silent growl, fists clenching. “Nephlite?”
Taking a deep breath to calm down, he turned to face Darien. “Yes,
your Highness?”
“I may need your help. I wrote to my lady of the Moon that I want to
profess our love to each other.”
“What?” Fury erupted within him all over, and he struggled to control
himself.
“I don’t know how she’ll reply, but she will have a note delivered to
you soon. I’ll keep myself hidden to watch you read it. If the note
indicates that my lady and I should meet, then go to that place and
I’ll follow you,” Darien instructed.
“As you wish, my prince” choked Nephlite and thinking, ‘He’s so
excited to see her, and yet he still does not want anyone to know.
But I know who she is.’

“Excuse me?” a female voice said from behind.
Nephlite turned and nearly lost it when he faced Lita. “Um, yes?”
Darien cleared his throat and excused himself, giving Nephlite a
knowing look. As soon as he was out of sight, the couple looked at
each other, emotionlessly. Then, slowly, she held out the note to
him. Going slowly also, he took it and read it. While he read, Lita
thought as she stared at him, ‘How can this be? I thought I meant
something to him. Ever since we met as kids, I dreamed of seeing him
again and experiencing my first kiss with him. Was it all a game to
him? Is he really a compulsive liar like Ken told me?”
Nephlite finished the note and looked at Lita as if waiting for her
to say something. She stared back, expecting his answer. Finally, he
spoke, “I will follow you.” Feeling her heart being crushed, she
raised her chin up, defiantly, made a turnabout, and walked in the
direction of the balcony.

Nephlite felt his heart being slammed on the floor. ‘She is actually
going to meet him!’ he thought, grinding his teeth as he followed
her. ‘Why? Why her? Why is she the one I cannot have?’ The idea about
her being with the prince soon made his hands clench and unclench in
anger. ‘Molly is right about my temper. I must control myself for the
prince’s happiness!’ Yet he cannot help feel his blood erupting to
escape from within as he took in the romantic setting of the balcony
where Lita had led him. ‘But I can’t stand it! The atmosphere is too
romantic here. He will surely kiss…my Lita!’
Lita then stopped at the center of the balcony and turned to face
him. They stood motionless, staring at each other. Then they heard
two voices at the same time.

“My love!” It was Prince Endymion.
“My darling!” It was Princess Serenity.
Simultaneously, Lita and Nephlite closed their eyes as they listened
to the voices speaking to whom they believe was intended for someone
else. ‘I cannot bear to watch him hold her,’ Lita thought, feeling
the tears burning under her shut eyes.
‘I cannot bear to see her kissed by another man,’ Nephlite thought,
shaking with fury. There was the sound of embracing, deep sighs, then
a stolen kiss. At that point, Nephlite snapped. Drawing out his
sword, he yelled, “GET YOURSELF OFF OF HER!”
Gasping, Lita opened her eyes to behold a shocking sight. She
witnessed Darien and Serena in a loving embrace, staring wide-eyed in
shock at Nephlite, also wide-eyed in shock, pointing his sword at
them.

“I…I…I…” he stammered. Dropping his sword, he stared at the embraced
couple. “Your Highness?”
“Nephlite!” Darien said, sternly.
“Princess!” Lita exclaimed.
“Lita!” replied Serena. “What in the moon is going on here? Why was
the prince’s general pointing his sword at us?”
Kneeling on one knee, Nephlite crossed his chest with his arm and
bowed his head. “My prince, forgive my outrageous behavior. The
reason why I acted is because I thought your lady of the Moon was
someone else.”
“By the Earth’s gravity, who?” Darien asked. Looking up, Nephlite
quickly cast a quick glance at Lita who, in turn, became startled.
‘Why is he indicating me unless…’ she thought, trailing off with
realization. ‘Oh!’
The general stood up to face the prince. “Princess Lita of Jupiter.”
Serena and Darien gasped, then looked at Lita, then back to Nephlite.
“Oh, come on, Nephlite! It could have been anyone else. What made you
think it was her?” Darien asked.

“Your Highness, may I speak?” Lita interjected. “I believe it’s
because I am Serena’s messenger of her love letters. And if I’m
right, Lord Nephlite is the messenger of yours.” She looked at him
with hope in her eyes. “Am I right?”
Realization also dawned on him, and Nephlite let out a hearty laugh.
“Yes.”
Squealing, Serena clapped her hands in joy. “Oh, Lita, then this is
the person you talked about? I can’t believe it!” Then she made a
frown as she realized something else. “Wait a minute. Did you think
he was the man from Earth I’ve been writing to?”
Blushing, the Jupiterian princess nodded. “I guess I assumed wrong
like Nephlite did. I feel like such a fool.”
“Oh, come on, Lita, don’t be so hard on yourself. People act pretty
crazy when they’re in love.” Serena turned to Darien. “I think it’s
time to let everyone know of our relationship. Shall we, my love?”
Chuckling, Darien offered his arm to her. “We shall, my darling.”

As the couple left the balcony, Lita and Nephlite looked at each
other, then away from each other, then back again. They continued on
like this until they heard applause from inside the ballroom. “Well,
uh,” he began. “I guess they made it publicly official.”
“Yeah,” she replied, wringing her hands. “Nephlite, about what
happened-“
“Please, let me,” he cut her off, abruptly but kindly. “You see when
I first met you, you were so feisty and so determined. I never forgot
that look after our first fight. And when you first kiss my cheek, I
acted on impulse and bet to kiss you if we ever meet again. And we
did meet again. You have changed and have grown more beautiful. I
didn’t care if I won or lost the bet. I wanted to kiss you anyway.
You don’t know how happy I felt when I realized I was your first.
That is why it angered me so when I thought my prince was in love
with you. I would do anything to prevent any other man kissing you.”
Taking a deep breath, Nephlite sighed deeply. “I’m so sorry I acted
so rashly just a few minutes ago.”

Smiling, Lita stepped forward to him. “You were the first boy who
praised me so well after our first fight. Since then, I trained not
to just improve my skills, but to impress you. You’ve always been on
my mind since I first kissed your cheek. I always wondered if I would
ever see you again.” She closed her eyes, briefly. “I have had combat
with other guys, but they were only for competition in skills. Then
there was this guy. I sort of fell for his charm and good looks, and
I thought he liked me. But it turned out I was just a stand-in when I
found out he was in love with another girl. He was just using me to
make her jealous. I guess that is why I assumed you were the love of
my princess.” Opening her eyes, she looked up at him, tears swimming.
“I didn’t want to be hurt again so instead I’d rather let my princess
be happy.”

Reaching out, Nephlite placed his hands on her shoulders. He wiped
away a runaway tear on her cheek. “Oh, Lita, I promise I would never
ever treat you like that.”
She placed her hand on his while he caressed her cheek. “I know. Hmm,
maybe my princess is right, Nephlite. People act pretty crazy when
they’re in love.”
“Then I guess we’re pretty crazy,” he murmured as head lowered down
to hers. Lita raised hers also, and warmth and shivers explored all
over them as they tenderly kissed.

SEVERAL YEARS LATER…

Lita and Nephlite materialized on the Earth, along with their twin
children of seven years, Leto and Nephelia. They walked across the
green field which had rolling green hills and the beautiful blankets
of flowers everywhere. Stopping by a patch of pink roses, Lita picked
one up and sniffed it. The kids ran around her, laughing while
Nephlite watched them, smiling. He thought his wife never looked more
beautiful standing there in her light green dress. Looking back at her
husband, Lita smiled as he walked towards her, looking so handsome in
his white shirt opened to his dark blue pants, revealing a white
undershirt. As he stood by her, their son Leto was putting a crown of
pink roses on his sister’s head. Giggling, Nephelia tucked a pink
rose behind his ear. “Mommy,” she said. “This place is so beautiful.
Why do you like it so much, besides the pink roses?”
“It’s where your dad and I first met,” Lita answered, placing her
hands on her hips, proudly.

* Smiling, Nephlite placed his arm around her as Lita looked up at
him, smiling back. *

Later, they passed by the gazebo and stopped a few yards away from
it. “Why are we here, Dad?” Leto asked. “Is this a special place,
too?”
“Mm-hmm,” Nephlite agreed, as he hugged Lita from behind. “It’s where
your mom and I first kissed.”
“Eeeewwww!” both kids yelled, and they ran into the gazebo. “They’re
crazy, totally crazy!”
Laughing, the couple held each other as they watched their children
run around in the gazebo.
“We sure were,” they said, together. “Pretty crazy.”
