After thirty four rings, Usagi placed the telephone receiver back on its stand. It was the same procedure she had been doing regularly every day, each with the same result: nothing. She strained her memory back to the last conversation she'd had with her love:

"Usako, you know I love you, don't you?"

"Yes, Mamo-chan"

"I won't let a week go by without calling you, and you can call me whenever you want".

"I will, Mamo-chan"

"But there are times when I may not answer, Usako. The workload will be heavy, and I'll be very busy for a while, but please, please don't doubt me…"

A week, just one week, no more than that without a call. But the thing was, it had been four.

The room was dark, apart from a shaft of moonlight escaping through a fist sized hole in the rotten brickwork, cutting the darkness like a knife. A figure was stood by the hole, peering though at the night sky. After a short while, a second figure appeared, a rustling of feather light clothing and a jingle of tiny bells complimenting her arrival.

"Seiya" she said softly. "Seiya, you must stay focussed on our mission. Your thoughts have long been on she who they shouldn't, and not long enough on she who they should". There was a pause, and then a reply.

"I am sorry, my Princess, but I am unable to abide by your wishes as much as I want to. There is a bad feeling in my heart, and I know she is connected to it, but in what way I cannot tell".

"Seiya, you must concentrate on our own troubles. That is all that matters". The woman returned to the shadows, but still the man stood and stared at the moon; clear, white, and bright in the evening sky.

"Moshimoshi, Mamoru speaking"

For a moment the words stuck in Usagi's throat, but talking a breath she began to speak.

"Mamo-chan, this is Usagi". There was a silence on the other end. "I… err… well I just thought I would give you a call, y'know, as we haven't spoken for about four weeks and you said you wouldn't let a week go by without talking and you know I'd never doubt you because I love you Mamo-chan and…"

"Usagi" said the other voice flatly. Usagi stopped in mid-sentence. Usagi? Not Usako, or even Odango? "Usagi, I told you I would be busy. The work at my college is hard, far beyond your level, it takes a lot of effort to meet the standard".

"Oh, I see…" Usagi faltered at the obvious insult. "Well, I have some good news! I have a…"

"Look Usagi, I don't have time to chat"

"But…"

"I'm sorry, I have to go now"

"Well, ok then, Mamo-chan. Bye for now…" She was answered by a dial tone. Usagi sat on the stairs and put her head in her hands. From the dark room, a cloud passed over the moon.
