Serena's father was by nature and necessity a suspicious man, and he did not like the look of the car that had just pulled up in front of their house. A young man got out and jogged around to the other side where he opened the door to help Serena out. He felt a righteous temper begin to boil up inside him. Who was this man and what was he doing with his daughter? True to form, his wife answered the door before they even got halfway down the walk.

"Serena? What happened?"

Serena blushed. "I slipped and fell and Lita got Darien to take me to the hospital then drive me home."

Serena's mother turned her attention to Darien. "Thank you very much. How do you know Lita?"

He shrugged. "Lita spent…um…"

"Two months." They both jumped at Serena's dry tone. "Two months of hellish torture hearing about that boy."

Darien chuckled softly. "Lita spent two months trying to attract the attentions of one of my friends. That was almost a year ago, so I've known Serena and her friends on and off for that long." He shrugged. "Really I think they called me because I have a car and Andy has a motorcycle. It just made more sense for me to take her."

"Thank you again."

He nodded to them both. "I better get going, I have to go to work. Try not to break your neck, klutz."

"Go suck an egg you jerk!"

Serena smiled at his back before turning to face her parents. Her mother placed her hands on her hips. "You should have called."

"At two a.m.? No thank you. I was almost asleep as it was by the time the X-rays got done."

They went inside and Sammy ran over ready to insult her, but his mother spoke first. "That boy seemed nice."

Serena tried to shrug but she was only marginally successful with the crutches. "He's ok. He teases me a lot, but he's really very nice."

"Yes I can tell."

Serena glanced at her mother and saw a knowing look on her face. She shook her head. "Oh no, not like that. Rei would kill me."

"Rei likes him?"

She winced slightly and hoped they assumed she had just jostled her foot. "Yeah, she's going to have a cow when she finds out he drove me home."

She sat down in the kitchen with a sigh and smiled as her mother pulled out some cakes for them to munch on. Sammy grabbed one and proceeded to cram in down his throat. Serena chose a small one. After her meal last night she wasn't very hungry. There was a knock at the front door and Sammy ran to answer it. A few minutes later Ami, Mina, and Lita appeared. Serena smiled at them.

"You'll have to excuse me if I don't get up, I'm a little sore."

Her mother left them, ushering Sammy out of the room and they all sat. Ami was the one to start. "What Rei said last night…"

Serena held up a hand. "She meant every word of it. You and I both know that. An apology means nothing unless it comes from her. Besides, it worked itself out in the end."

"She didn't know you were hurt!"

Serena shook her head. "It wouldn't have mattered. She still would have said it."

Mina jumped up. "But you're not useless and she had no right to call you…call you that name!"

"Mina, please." Serena made a slight placating gesture her eyes darting to the door through which her mother and brother were listening. "What's done is done. I don't hold a grudge, that's what you're worried about, right? That I'm upset with her?"

They all nodded. Lita bit her lip. "We…we need…"

"All of us must remain together, but with Rei in a temper it makes it hard, I know. She'll come around, just let her work through her anger. I'm not upset and you shouldn't be either."

"Are you sure?"

She smiled and nodded. "Yeah, I'm fine."

Mina sat and checked under the table examining her foot. "That looks bad."

"The doctor said I'm to stay off of it for a few weeks." She chuckled softly and leaned closer so that her mother and brother could not hear. "Hopefully I put the fear of God into Beryl and she'll give me time to heal."

The other girls smiled and nodded. At last they rose. "If you need us to help out, just ask. We'll see you around?"

"Sure thing."
