Darien entered the arcade and felt his life fall back into place. Somehow, no matter how hard school was, or how stressful work was, he could always relax in this place. Serena was leaning against her crutches, talking to Andy while Mina played a video game. He came up to her and nodded.
“Hey there, meatball head.”
“My, my, what a unique creature. I think I've discovered a new species of farm animal.”
He chuckled softly and Andy snickered as well. “How's the ankle?”
She sighed. “I want to get rid of these crutches. My arms are killing me.”
“How much longer?”
“Another week.” He saw the nervousness in her eyes. How much longer would Beryl wait before striking again? “My foot feels fine, but I don't want to push it.”
“Sounds wise. Who are you and what did you do with Serena?” She stuck out her tongue at him and he grinned. “Don't stick that out unless you intend to use it.”
She blushed and sucked her tongue back in. “Pervert.”
He leaned closer, his breath caressing her cheek. “Care for me to prove it?”
She gasped softly her eyes snapping to Andy's reddening face before she could focus on him. “Darien…”
He moved away, a sly smile touching his lips. Serena wasn't sure if she wanted to slap him or kiss him. Since kissing him tended to lead them down a road she preferred to explore in private, she settled for huffing with annoyance and hobbling over to where Mina was playing. Andy reached up and touched Darien's forehead. Darien swatted his hand away.
“What's wrong with you?”
“You were flirting with her.”
Darien's smile softened as he watched her, and Andy gaped. He had never seen his friend so…so content looking. “You have to admit, though, she is more than worth flirting with.”
His eyes narrowed. “What happened between you two? And how did she really hurt her ankle?”
Darien glanced at Mina and moved toward the back of the arcade, Andy followed. Making sure no one could over hear, Darien told him about their encounter with Evan and his friends. Andy sucked in his breath, his eyes narrowed and Darien saw the beginnings of a righteous rage building inside him.
“That animal actually said…offered to share her with you if you let them…rape her?”
“Yup.”
A slight smile touched his lips. “I was wondering how he got hurt.”
Darien shrugged. “He should learn how to use a knife before he tries to carry one. It was a simple maneuver to stab him with his own blade.”
There was a smugness in his voice, but Andy knew it was born out of his confidence in his experience rather than a need to prove himself superior. “You could have killed him.”
“So?” For the first time, and Andy hoped the last, Darien's eyes became cold. Andy knew, instinctively that Evan had indeed been in mortal danger, whether the other knew it or not. “It's not like anyone would protest.”
Andy nodded. They both turned and watched as Ami, Lita, and Rei joined the other two. He reached over and squeezed Darien's shoulder gently.
“Yah did good, man. I'm proud to know you.”
They went back over just in time to hear Lita suggest a shopping trip. Ami immediately declined, she had to study. Serena laughed and shook her head.
“Hell no, I can hardly feel my arms as it is. I think I'll head home.”
Rei, Lita, and Mina left a few minutes later. Ami sat down next to Serena. “Do you want me to call you a cab?”
Darien stepped forward. “I'll drive her, it's not so far out of my way.”
“Actually, if you could drop me at the museum that would be great. I can take the bus home from there.”
All three of them jumped slightly. “Um, sure, no problem.”
He helped her into his car and started toward the museum. She smiled at his silence. “You want to know what I'm doing. Well there's an exhibit on myths and legends that center around the moon and, I don't know why, but I want to check it out.”
“Mind if I join you?”
He cast a smile her way and she nodded. “I was actually hoping you would. I don't know if I would ask the right questions.” She reached over and took his hand gently in hers. “And I miss spending time with you.”
He smiled at her, remembering how it had felt to wake up with her in his arms. There had been something vitally right about it. In those few moments before they had been forced to stir he had been content, completely at peace. He had also had the strange sense that this feeling was not foreign to him, as though he had awoken in that position many times before. After their little encounter a few days later, though, neither had been willing to get too close, afraid they would loose control again. He parked the car and helped her up the steps. At the entrance, an over-zealous security guard got her a wheel chair and they joined the tour. There was the usual nonsense about werewolves and harvests, the type of folk legends most people had heard of. There was even a section of how female sexuality was supposedly affected by the moon. Darien had to admit he found it interesting the way Serena's face would color at the mention of certain things. At last they came to the last exhibit. This one caught their attention.
“According to this legend, over a thousand years ago there was a great kingdom on the moon. An ancient evil appeared and the Moon Queen gave her life to protect this planet and all life in our universe. Now as you can plainly see, the Moon Queen is a representation of Kannon, the Bodhisattva of Compassion…”
Serena blocked the rest of the analysis out and wheeled over to the drawings. The artist's renderings were close, but not quite right. There were too many pillars, not enough fountains, and there should have been a garden filled with only white roses. She started suddenly and leaned back. Where had all that come from?
“This is supposedly what the crown of the Moon Queen looked like. As with many legends of this nature, it is also said that the Moon Queen or perhaps her daughter depending on the teller, will return to save us from this evil again in the future. I hope you have all enjoyed this exhibit…”
She zoned him out again as she and Darien filled past the crown. They stood in the hall for a moment before Darien spoke. “Her crown…there shouldn't have been anything but white diamonds in it.”
Serena nodded. “And the royal palace was laid out like a fan, not like those buildings. There were no strait lines, everything was curved, graceful.”
The curator stepped out of the exhibit and smiled at them. “We'll be closing soon, so you had better move along.”
Serena cleared her throat lightly. “If you don't mind my asking…how did you come by those drawings?”
He grinned. “That is a trade secret.”
Darien drew himself up and to Serena it suddenly seemed as though he were a great general or a king. The world would jump if he told it to. “It is important to us.”
The older man frowned at them, his eyes looking inward for a moment before nodding slightly. “I'll show you, come on.”
Darien took the handles of her wheelchair and they followed him back into the exhibit. A door hidden as a wall panel opened to reveal a vast work space. Here he guided them to a locked cabinet. He pulled a key from a chain around his neck and unlocked the twin doors. The book he selected was almost too big for him to carry and obviously old, its pages yellowed with time. He set it down on the table.
“I still have trouble believing this thing, and I've read it hundreds of times. It claims to be the history of the Moon Empire. It talks about Warriors or Princesses of each of the Planets, but for the most part if focuses on the center of the Empire, the Moon Palace.”
He opened to a page of drawings and Serena slowly levered herself out of the chair. Her fingers skimmed over the pages without touching them. A smile touched her lips when she saw the date.
“No wonder the fountain was missing…this was drawn before it was commissioned, before the Great Quake shook down half the North Wing.”
The old man frowned at her. “Please, child…speak English, or at least French. I do not understand…was that Chinese? I know these characters bear a certain resemblance to Chinese. That was how I pieced together my translation.”
Serena flushed and shook her head. “Sorry, just talking to myself.”
She turned the pages slowly, her eyes skimming over the foreign and familiar language until she came to the end. Here was the telling of the last battle between her mother and the dark powers. Silently she closed the book.
“You have my gratitude. Please, whatever happens, do not allow harm to befall this tome. It is truly a treasure, whether it is fact or fairytale.”
“You believe it to be fact, don't you?”
She smiled up at him. “I know it to be, but my reasons for that are my own.”
“Then do you believe as I do, that this Sailor Moon and the Sailor Scouts, are none other than the Princesses? I know they call themselves by the names of the planets.”
“I would have to say, that you are not far from the mark. We have to go now. Once again, I thank you.”
He inclined his head slightly. “The pleasure was mine.”
Darien took hold of the handles on her chair and wheeled her to the elevator. They got off in the lobby where she retrieved her crutches, once they got outside though, neither wanted to go home.
“There's a café nearby, would you like something to drink?”
She nodded. “Yeah, that would be nice.”
They got a table and ordered coffee before they spoke again. “Did you learn what you needed?”
She looked up at him. Could she tell him? Would he believe her? “I…”
The coffee arrived and she fell silent. She examined her drink for a long moment before looking back up at him. She saw fear and understanding in his eyes, perhaps it was all right to tell him.
“I've been having strange dreams, almost like memories. I don't ever remember seeing these places though, but I know about them…like with the exhibit.”
He nodded. “There should have been a rose garden, by the North wall. They were all white.”
She nodded. “And there was a great fountain out front. We used to play in it in the summer.” Tears touched the corners of her eyes. “What's wrong with me?”
He reached over and took her hand. “Nothing. It seems that we…that memories of an age long ago have returned to us. It will be all right. These may yet help us.”
They finished their coffee, but instead of driving her home he took her over to his place. Serena called Molly and got her friend to cover for her before calling her mother to tell her she would be spending the night with Molly. Darien watched her in silence as she hung up the phone.
“You don't like lying to them, do you?”
“No, but with my father the way he is, it's a necessary evil.”
He rose and walked over to her, his hands running over her arms. She shivered with delight at his touch. He leaned closer, his lips brushing hers. He went slowly. Before they had both been gripped with this strange need that had consumed them, now Darien enjoyed her taste, the feel of her lips against his. He reveled in her innocence as she slid her hands around him. He pulled her against him, sliding his tongue along her lips. Timidly she granted him access to her mouth. He dragged against her tongue, enticing her to be bolder. At last they separated, slightly winded.
“Why did you want to stay here tonight?”
She blushed as she looked up at him. “Because I feel safe when I'm with you.”
He slipped a hand down to her butt and lifted her against him. “Do you know what you do to me? God, just walking into a room with you in it is torture.”
She gasped softly. “Darien…what are you saying?”
He bent his head, resting his forehead on her shoulder. Should he tell her? Should he say it? “I love you.”
Serena felt a smile touch her lips. “I love you too.”
He lifted his head, looking her in the eyes. “I want…I want you. I know you're young, and it seems like we have all the time in the world but…”
She reached up and touched his lips. “Tomorrow I might get into a battle I can't win. The same goes for you. We are not children, Darien. We have been living as adults for a very long time.”
He bent and kissed her again. Gently he lifted her, carrying her into his bedroom. He laid her down, his body covering hers. With a soft sigh his lips traveled up her jaw to her ear. From there he traced a line down her neck. She gasped softly, her hands sliding over him as heat pooled in her groin. She reached down and pulled his shirt out of his waist band. With a speed she did not know she possessed she unbuttoned it. There was his perfect body for her to see. She slid her hands over him, pushing his shirt off and he gasped softly as she brushed his nipples. She did it again, and felt his whole body shudder. He reached down and tugged her shirt upward. She lifted herself to help him remove it. He continued his downward journey until he came to her lace-covered breasts.
He laid a kiss on each nipple before reaching behind her and unsnapping her bra. Freed of their constraints her breasts came into view. He gazed at them, licking his lips hungrily. She blushed and looked away, embarrassed by his scrutiny.
“I…I know their small…”
He kissed her lips to silence her. “You are perfect.”
She arched her back, rubbing her breasts against his chest. He groaned softly, he was already painfully hard. It seemed impossible for him to become even more aroused, yet with each passing moment she continued to prove him wrong.
“Are you sure you want to do this? I don't know if I'll be able to stop. I know that sounds bad, but I want you so badly. I've wanted you for so long. I want to show you I love you and only you.”
She slid her hands over his chest, down his stomach and began to unbuckle his belt. “I'm a virgin, Darien, so please, go slowly with me.”
He groaned softly before climbing off her. He shucked his pants and boxers in one motion and watched as she removed her skirt and panties. She looked up at him, her eyes wide when at last she saw his erection revealed. That was supposed to fit inside her? He saw the fear in her eyes as he slipped between her legs. He kissed her gently and reached down to her nest of blond curls. He parted the lips of her sex and slid his fingers along her. She gasped as he found her tiny bud. Her whole body jerked with sudden spasmodic pleasure as he manipulated her clitoris. Slowly he slipped one finger inside her, thrusting gently. She was so tight and so hot he almost lost it. He closed his eyes, fighting hard for control as he slipped a second finger inside her, stretching her tight passage. After a moment he pulled his hand away. She looked up at him, her eyes glazed with arousal.
He slipped his slick fingers over his member, lubricating it as he positioned himself her entrance. Gently he gripped her hips and thrust into her. She gasped, her whole body going ridged with pain. It felt as though she was being torn in half. He leaned over her, his lips by her ear, whispering soft words of comfort. Slowly the pain ebbed and he felt her relax. Her legs came up to wrap around his waist, locking him against her. Gently he rocked against her. She gasped softly, and winced in pain.
“I'm sorry. We'll stop.”
“No, it's getting better. Don't, please.”
He rocked against her again and she relaxed slightly, a soft moaning sigh escaping her lips. He began to thrust into her, his movements slow and deliberate. He reached down to adjust her hips slightly and felt her gasp as he penetrated her even more deeply.
“Move with me.” He whispered softly. “That's it, Serena.”
She gave a soft moan of pleasure as her hips rose to meet his. He could feel himself speeding up and consciously forced himself to slow. She would come first. He was determined to see her through more than one orgasm tonight. Sweat covered them both. With each breath, a soft moan slipped past her lips. He felt her gasp suddenly and her hands gripped at him. Her nails dug furrows in his back as her body arched under him. He sped up slightly, enjoying the feel of her losing control beneath him. She writhed crying out softly as her inner passage contracted around him. He groaned, forcing control as his body screamed for him to gain his own release. After a moment he felt the flood-tide ebb. She seemed to collapse beneath him. His thrusts slowed to a soft undulating tempo and she gazed up at him.
“We're not finished yet, Love.”
She smiled and nodded as his pace increased again. She arched against him, her nipples, hard as rocks, pressing against his heated flesh. He groaned as his muscles trembled. He needed to come so badly he ached. She pulled him down to her and he kissed her, his mouth hard against hers. She tasted and smelled so good. He increased his pace and she did as well. Suddenly he couldn't hold on anymore, it was all too much. He heard her gasp as her second orgasm swept over her and he let himself go, pounding himself into her willing body and shooting his seed deep within her. Then, exhausted, he collapsed. They lay there, breathing hard for several minutes before he found the strength to lift himself off of her. They were slick with the evidence of their love-making, but neither really cared. He reached over and turned off the light, then pulled her against him.
“Serena…marry me?”
She laughed softly. “I thought you'd never ask.”
