Serena awoke slowly. She was warm and very much enjoyed the feeling. She shifted and felt her source of warmth move to accommodate her new position. Slowly she opened her eyes. Darien lay watching her, a contented smile on his face once he saw she was awake.
“Welcome back.”
“The Crystal?”
He nodded toward the night stand and she saw it sitting along with her wand and her broach. With a sigh of relief she snuggled against him. He had replaced her air cast, and though it was a little tighter than she liked, it felt good to have the added support. As for the rest of her, he had dressed her in one of his shirts and left only her panties on. She smiled at him.
“Did you enjoy changing me?”
He chuckled softly. “It would have been more fun if you were awake.”
She punched him lightly in the chest. “Pervert.”
“Yup.”
Closing her eyes she rested her head against his chest. “My pervert.”
“And no one else's, ever.” He ran his fingers through her hair. “We're going to have to tell your parents eventually.”
He felt her wince then nod. “Yeah, but not tonight.”
He gathered her to him, just enjoying the feel of her next to him. This was how it had been back then. Silently he hoped that Beryl would just leave. He knew it would never happen, but he could still hope. He closed his eyes and they drifted toward sleep together.
When Darien awoke he saw Serena digging through her purse she pulled out a sheet of pills and opened one. He watched as she went into bathroom. He rose and examined the pills. Birth control. She was on birth control. He heard her come in and looked up. She blushed and took them from him, replacing them in her purse.
“I've been on it for about a year. It helps with my cramps.”
He touched her cheek gently. “At least we don't have to worry about what happened last time.”
She nodded, her eyes suddenly sad. “I wonder what he would have been like.”
“It could have been a daughter too.” She leaned against him and he stroked her hair gently. “I'm sorry.”
“Don't be. You were right to keep me from battle.”
“I can see now, though, that is why we lost last time. Your mother and I wanted to protect you and we ended up denying ourselves our strongest ally.”
She shook her head and looked up at him. “Come on, let's get this over with. My parents will start to wonder soon.”
He rose and nodded. “Yeah, I can already tell this is going to be an interesting day.”

Sammy giggled with glee when he saw his sister and that boy walking up the path to their door. This was going to be classic. His mother opened the door, a strained smile on her lips as she let them in. Serena leaned her crutches against the wall and Darien helped her remove her sandals. She leaned on him into the kitchen where they sat down. Her father sat glaring at them, waiting for his daughter to talk. She looked pointedly at the table top. Finally Darien cleared his throat.
“I would like your permission to see your daughter.”
“Absolutely not.”
They both winced at the predictable answer. “I know I'm older than her but…”
“Yes, and she is too young for boys.”
Serena opened her mouth to protest but her mother beat her to it. “Darling, be reasonable. I was only a little older than her when we met.”
“That is different.”
“Why is it so different? I think we should allow this. At least we will know where she's going.”
“It just is!”
She sighed softly. “Well I think that if Serena truly wishes to see this boy she will see him. We cannot control her every action and I think there would be less anger between us if we let this happen.”
“I…but…”
He came to a sputtering stop as she reached over and gripped Darien's hand. “We would love to have you for dinner if you can stay.”
“I would love to.”
“Good, I'm so glad that's settled.”
She rose and smiled at Serena. “Why don't you two watch some TV, dinner should be ready soon.”
Serena rose and Darien wrapped an arm around her waist, practically lifting her off the ground as he helped her into the living room where they turned on the evening news. Her father almost snarled at her mother.
“She is too young for boys.”
“Did you see how he dotes on her? I think this will be good for her, especially if she's going to heal properly.”
“I still don't believe her. She may be a little clumsy, but she's never hurt herself like that before.”
“I know, I don't believe her either, but there isn't much we can do until she decides to tell us the truth.”
When dinner was ready they all sat down to what turned out to be a civilized meal. Sammy bolted his food, much the way Serena usually did, but Darien noted that once again she ate slowly, though she did eat more than the average human. He listened carefully as her father told them about his day, then told them about his job before starting to talk about school. At last he rose and told them he had to go. Serena moved to rise but his hand on her shoulder stopped her.
“No you don't. Not until that cast comes off.”
She snorted. “I'm not helpless.”
“I know, but you are still hurt. I can find the door on my own.” He leaned over and kissed her cheek. “Stay safe.”
“You too.”
He left them and she listened as the front door closed behind him. She heard his car start and sighed as he pulled away. Her mother started to clear the dishes as Serena rose and got her crutches.
“I have homework to do. `Night all.”
Her mother froze mid-action, her mouth open as she watched her daughter ascend the steps to her room. Never in all her life had she ever heard of Serena voluntarily doing homework. What had happened to change her? She was different, she could tell. There was a seriousness about her that had never been there before. Perhaps Darien was good for her in other ways as well.
