Serena walked out of school her books in hand and glanced up and down the street. Molly came running after her and hooked her arm through Serena's.
“So what are we doing today?”
Serena shrugged slightly and started walking. She had the strangest feeling, as though the next shadow was going to pounce on her. “I was going to a nursing home just down the street.”
“A nursing home?”
“Yeah, I started volunteering there twice a week.”
“Why?”
Serena smiled at her friend's predictable response. “A couple of reasons, first it feels good to help people, second the elderly have a lot to tell us. Some of them are down-right spunky.” She giggled at Molly. “Mr. Jones followed me around for four hours last Tuesday, begging me to marry him so he could take me away to Tahiti and show me a real time.”
“Sounds weird.”
“He's a sweet guy, and it was funny watching him try to keep up with me with his walker.”
Molly giggled. “He still sounds weird.”
Serena shrugged. “It was all a joke and everyone knew it. Whenever he passed Mrs. Peterson she would whack him with her cane a tell him to stop thinking with his limp pecker and start thinking with his Viagra.”
Molly gasped softly and could hardly contain the laughter. After a few minutes she managed to calm herself down. “It can't all be like that.”
“It's not, but then I didn't sign on to do the easy fun stuff. I figured they'd stick me with the jobs that no one else wants. It can be smelly, and tough, and down-right disgusting, but I still do it.”
“Why, I mean, if it's so hard?”
“Come with me today, and you'll see.”
The building smelled of medicine and age, but it was still clean. Molly walked into the front lobby behind Serena and saw immediately what her friend meant. They lit up. Every man and woman in the room seemed to become more alive, more animated the second they crossed the threshold. Serena introduced her around and then got to work. Molly helped her all that evening, and though the work was hard and some of it messy, Molly decided that she would come as often as she could. These people weren't on the brink of death, they were on the tail end of life and they planned on living as well as they could.
