Chapter 10
Getting Colder
Next morning:
Usagi, and her family spent alot of time togeather after the assailant invaded in their home. Alot of that time was spent talking about that night, and how to deal with it together. Kenji, in particular, was very talkative and was desperately trying to reasure himself, whether he knew it or not, for his family. With two of her very best friends in critical condition in the hospital and Mamoru still sore form the attack and was unable to help if needed.
Speaking of whom, Mamoru was laid-up in bed, but was unable to even try to rest. All he could see when he closed his eyes was the black mask of the intruder, the assailant. [Rinnng! - Rinng] His phone rang and reached for it too quickly, then was reminded of his sores.
"Hello?" He answered while squinting his eyes.
"Mamoru?"
"Oh, hello Rei."
"Hi, I just wanted to check up on you. So... how are ya doing?"
"Uhh, not bad I guess."
"Oh. What about Usagi, how's she doing?
"She's been with her house ever since. Right now they really need her alot more than I do."
"Oh, well that's nice and all, but what about you, I mean are you taking care of yourself?"
"I manage."
"Well I couldn't help but wounder."
"Thanks."
"Well, I've probley kept you on long enough, so get some rest."
"Thanks Rei."
"Bye." They both hung up. Mamoru felt alot better with the phone call. He stared at the ceiling, but wouldn't be able to get any peaceful sleep soon.
It would be several hours later that day, but over at Ami's apartment it was empty, and the fridge. It was completely emptied out. Ami entered the livingroom from the hall and was in the middle of stuffing half a fish in her mouth. She walked to the fridge again and stopped. Their wasn't anything thing left inside it anymore, she had eaten everything from the canned beets to the popsicles. Aside from the box of baking soda in the back corner there was nothing left. She closed the fridge, and by now swollowed the rest of the fish in her mouth. She looked at the rest of her apartment and then went for her shoes, laced them up and was out the door.
At the Hospital: (once again)
Ami's mother was at her daughters bedside, holding Ami by her hand as she laid there with machines and tubes keeping her alive. It was her greatest fear come true, her own daughter, as her own patient, in crtical condition.
[rinng-rinng rinng-rinng] She opened her cell-phone
"Hello?"
"Mrs. Mizuno?"
"Ah, Usagi. How are you?"
"I'm fine, but I was going to actually ask you that."
"[Sigh]... I never though something like this would ever happen, to my Ami."
"How is she, by the way?"
"She's still... not to good. Usagi? You've been such a good friend to Ami, I don't know how to thank you enough. Even as the new girl in school, you insisted being her friend. I really don't know how to thank you enough after all these years."
"Oh no, you don't have to thank me for anything. Being Ami's friend has always been like a blessing. She's always helped me in my homework, even though I'd think she'd would want to give up."
"Usagi, I happen to know that your friendship to her, means more to me than you'll ever know." Her voice began to choke up as she spoke.
"I can't even think of what your friendship could be priced at."
"Oh you don't have to say that."
"So, how are your parents? Are they okay?"
"... Yeah, they're okay. They're just umm, you know, hanging in there. Oh and were all giving our best wishes for Ami's quick recovery."
"That really means alot to me, and I'm sure Ami will recover in no time."
"I'll let yo go now, I'm sure you have plenty of things to do and stuff."
"Alright, say hello to your folkes for me."
"Sure will. Bye." Both hung-up their phones. Usagi got up, and went for the kitchen for some soup she heated for her brother. His back was so baddly brused, and a deep purple color on his upper back. He couldn't even move his arm real well enough to even write his own name. Usagi carried the soup up and spoon fed her brother and gave him two asperins to dull the pain that would sometimes surge up.
She couldne't remove the image from her mind, him and the explosive entry he made, and virtrully destroying her family.
(If there was a way to defeat him, if he had a weakness. If we could find what gave him his strength and energy, and remove it.) But Usagi's thoughts were only "what ifs" and nothing else. She walked back down stairs, with heavy thoughts in her mind. She needed facts and a plan, but neither her or any of her friends had either. To many of her friends were hurt and it would be only a matter of time before the masked gunman, the creature, or the entity would finish what they started. To many people were hurt and killed, and so far they had done nothing to avenge their deaths.
[knock-knock-knock]
She nearly jumped out of her skin at the sound.
(He wouldne't come back so soon, would he?) She stood still for a few moments.
(If I don't answer. He might go away. He might also break-in.) She started walking over with a hand over her heart.
[knock-knock-knock]
It seemed to take forever to reach the door, and even longer for the door-knob. She wasn't aware any of her friends coming over, and usually they would at least call her. It also could have been one of her borther's school friends, but it could still be that masked man with the gun. She dug her hand in her pocket for her broach, just in case. She opened the door slightly and peered through.
"Hi Usagi, can I come in?"
She didn't know what to say, or even how to respond. She stood there with her mouth open, and her thoughts seemed to make a 200 mile-per-hour crash into a stone wall. Before Usagi could get to her next thought, her eyes rolled back into her head, the blood rushed out of her head and fainted backwards on the floor.
Ami was a little puzzled by her reaction and let herself in and closed the door.
"Usagi? .... Are you okay?" Ami crinckled her brow in confusion.
(Huh, I wonder what come over her.) Though slightly unsure of what to do, Ami got behind Usagi and draged her from under her arms and into her house and closed the door.
It was some time later Usagi woke up in her bed.
"Huh?" She sat-up and looked around.
"Was I dreaming?" She, didn't remember going to bed. Then again, Ami was perfectly okay in her dream.
"Wow, some dream." She got up, and noticed the time. She had been asleep for two hours. She must have left a window open, because it was even colder.
(That's real smart of you, Usagi. You're in charge of taking care of your own family, and you leave the window open.)
She saw instead her window open and then closed it. She walked back down and went to the fridge in the kitchen, but saw the fridge was running low on some supplies. She figured her family was getting sleep and decided to go to the store. She picked up her purse, her dad's car keys, and was off for the store.
"Hi Usagi." Usagi turned to the voice behind her.
"WHOA!!" She tripped over and fell back. She saw standing above her, Ami, in person.
"Wha – who? Who are you?"
"Usagi, stop kidding around, you know it's me." Ami said.
"Uhh – uhhhh? Huh?" Lost for words, she had no idea what to say.
"Ami?"
"Yeah?"
"Is that you?"
"Usagi, what wrong with you, are you okay?
"But, you're... you're... how?" Ami wasn't to sure what her friend was trying to say or how to say it.
"How, what?"
"I..." Usagi began to stand."
"I just talked to your mother."
"Oh, that's nice. What did ya talk about?" Usagi was on her two feet, but still shaking in the knees.
"You."
"Oh, that's nice."
"You're still in the hospital." Now Ami was really confused.
"Huh?"
"You were hurt real bad. On the streets, a few days ago."
"I don't get it. What are you talking about.? I'm fine." Usagi had just talked to Ami's mother just a few hours ago. Now right in front of her was her best friend, Ami. Happy as usual, and not a mark on her. Just as she was four days ago.
"Acctually, I do have a question about that."
"Sure...what?"
"Well, what was I doing inside a locked metal box in a hospital?"
A few hours later Usagi had already driven Ami to Rei's shrine, and then the questions began to fly.
Rei was in disbelief.
"I don't beleave this." One of Rei's first words that came out. Their Ami stood in front of her.
"I sincerely don't beleave this."
"Why, are you guys actng so weird?" Ami asked.
"Ami... You are Ami right?"
"Rei, I got you a purple silk blouse for your birthday last year. Remember?"
(Okay it's her)
"But, why arn't you still in the hospital?"
"Why should I be? By the way, why was I in a metal box when I woke up?"
"Ami, don't you remember?" Usagi asked.
"Remember? We fought that guy in the mask with the gun, and that big monster. Before that their were explosions in the streets."
"Well I remember the explosions."
"Don't you remember being hurt aferwards?"
"Uh, I remember something about being hit in the arm, but nothing after that."
"Ami, you were hurt really bad. Their was blood everywhere. I just talked to your mother, and she said you still haven't woken up!"
"Ami are you sure you don't remember anything like that?" Rei asked. Ami just shrugged her shoulders.
"If you don't mind me asking, when was I hurt? Also so far noone has answered why I was in a locked metal box?"
"Ami... don't you remember anything?"
"GUYS! I don't know what's going on! Please, just tell me!" An uneasy moment of silence fell, then Rei spoke.
"Ami, you were almost killed a few days ago."
"On the streets" Usagi added.
"What a sec, if your here, then who's at the hospital?" Rei, and Usagi looked at each other and then at Ami.
"Well, we could check."
"Yeah"
The apartment: 5:45pm
They were already gearing up. Both were dressed in very similiar black clothing. The assailant had tucked his t-shirt in his pants and snapped his belt tight around his waist. He attached his .45 pistol, grenades and other gear on with a second belt his shoved the large knife in its sheath attach to the waistban of his back.
The thug tucked a 12-gauge shot-pistol in his waistban. The thug diden't have as much extra gear as his partner, but he carried alot more spare ammunition.
Both equiped a Mac-10 on the left side for a crossdraw and with plenty of spare magizines, the thug however had three times more ammo .
The assailant threw on his black jacket with a hood, along with a black knit cap, then put on a pair of black leather gloves and snapped them tight around his wrists.
The thug picked up a long grey duffle bag and carried it out to the trunk of their car, a white Chevrolet Celebrity. The assailant came out shortly with his black duffle bag and a second smaller backpack, and put his gear in. He checked quickly to see if anyone was looking at them from their rooms then tossed the backpack in the frontseat.
"You lock the door and everything?" The thug asked.
"Yeah."
"Lets's go." And the thug closed the trunk lid of the car.
