Chapter 6

Nick stared out of the window of their limo, watching the scenery
flash by. He sighed, and rested his chin on his left hand, careful not
to aggravate his right arm, which was now held in place by a sling.
Luckily he would not have to perform at the VMAs, but he was worried
right now about the concert afterward. All that flying...

Finally they reached the airport and he grinned at his friend. "AJ
asked his mother to make pizza for you," Brian said. "For the road.
Pepperoni, of course."

Nick smiled back, although he didn't feel hungry. He was still trying
to grasp all that had happened, from what Tiffany did to him up to
what his father, or rather Bob Carter had told him. Food didn't seem
to satisfy him as it used to. He needed something more... an answer,
perhaps.

Who was his twin? All his father had gotten out before Aaron's
outburst was, "You'll never believe it, but-"

Aaron.

Nick couldn't stop thinking about him, worried that their bond was all
a lie because they weren't really brothers. Somehow, Nick couldn't
believe it. He knew that Aaron must have felt the same way.

"You coming, Nick? Or do we have to eat that pizza without you?" Brian
interrupted his thoughts.

"Sure, coming B-Rok," Nick snapped back to reality, and the two best
friends walked towards their gate.

The sound of sneakers squeaking as the Backstreet Boys rushed to their
flight was muffled by the screams that followed close behind them.
"We're late again because of you, Kaos," Kevin panted. "I hope you
realize someday how to stay on schedule."

"And I hope you realize someday that you're just an old bossy man!"
Nick responded with a sly grin on his face.

Kevin just shot an annoyed look at Nick. He always became irritable
when they were running behind schedule.

They arrived at the gate, and quickly boarded the airplane. "New York,
here we come!" Howie cheered, then yawned. Time to catch up on some
sleep.

Nick scrambled for a window seat and Brian sat beside him. "Man, I
miss our private jet," Nick pouted. "Too bad it needs its yearly
inspection this week."

"Better that then to go down in flames," AJ flashed an evil smile at
Nick, knowing his weakness.

Nick cringed, and Kevin glared at AJ. "Not now, Alex..." Kevin warned
him.

"Aw, Nick knows I'm just kidding with him," AJ reached over and
smacked Nick's good shoulder playfully. "Right, Kaos?"

"Yeah," Nick said, trying unsuccessfully to hide his nervousness.

He always felt anxious on airplanes, hating to wait to go from here to
there. He wondered if he could use his teleporting powers to get him
places someday...

He soon dozed off, watching the fluffy white clouds float by.

"Nick? Earth to Nick? Hello?" Brian's voice came out of the darkness,
but Nick didn't want to answer him, still groggy with sleep.

"Go away." He slurred.

"If you stay on this flight, you'll be headed to Chicago in thirty
nine minutes. That's a two hour flight, at least."

Nick leapt out of his seat. "Alright, alright man! I'm up! Let's go!"

It was an hour before show time. Nick was fixing up his hair in his
dressing room. He made a disgusted face as he glanced at his image in
the mirror, aimed at his injured arm in a sling. `Not very
attractive,' he thought glumly.

Instead of being upset with what Tiffany did to him, he turned his
tears to anger. How could she do that to him? He thought that she was
one of the sweetest, down-to-earth girls he had ever met. He vowed
never to be deceived by another good-looking woman from that moment
on. Beauty really was only skin deep.

He got up, smoothed his shirt and admired his reflection one last
time, but before he left his dressing room to meet the other guys he
paused. He fished out his necklace, right below the collar of his
shirt.

The crystal seemed lighter in color tonight, and it sparkled with an
even brighter, mysterious luster than Nick had ever seen it before.
"Whoa." He breathed and tucked it back under his shirt.

He felt the cool crystal touch his warm skin, and a shiver ran down
his spine. His arm hurt a little less than it had earlier, and his
spirits seemed to lift.

"Show time," Nick smiled, suddenly in a very good mood, and ready to
shock everyone by not only being on time - but also being EARLY to a
show.

He stepped out of the dressing room and met Brian outside. "Ready to
check this scene out?" Nick smiled as Brian exaggerated his Southern
accent.

"Yeah, after you Mr. Littrel," Nick grinned.

They turned the corner of the hallway, joking around. Nick felt almost
back to normal, the only thing reminding him otherwise being his
injured arm.

Suddenly, Nick ran smack into someone else. He doubled over in pain,
as the burning ache returned and radiated from his shoulder. He felt
his crystal slip out from his shirt, but was in too much pain to stop
it from falling to the floor.

"Oh my gosh! Nick, are you okay? I'm so sorry," a VERY familiar voice
asked in a worried tone.

Nick clutched his wounded shoulder and let out a deep moan. He looked
up at whom he had run into.

It was Justin Timberlake.

"You okay, man? I'm really sorry," Justin repeated, concerned for his
musical rival.

"I'm fine," Nick choked out, the pain suddenly unbearable.

Justin caught Nick as he suddenly collapsed, but Nick said, "I'm
fine," and pushed Justin away, knocking something from Justin's body
in the process.

Justin's hand quickly grasped at where his necklace had been, but it
was already resting on the ground.

Nick and Justin both bent down to pick up their necklaces, nearly
bumping heads together.

They gasped when they saw their pendants on the floor.

Justin looked at Nick, and Nick looked at Justin.

"YOU'RE-" They chorused, and then both fainted, falling to the ground
in unison.

Brian and JC rushed over to their respective band mates. They noticed
two crystals on the floor, both identical in cut but their colors were
different. One was an emerald green, and the other a deep sapphire
blue. Brian and JC looked to each other, speechless.

Finally, JC spoke. "Let me guess... his twin brother was `on the other
side' too, right?"
