Chapter 4

"Bone!" Nick was the first to see AJ get off the airplane. He rushed
over to him, and wrapped his older friend in a big hug. "We've missed
you, man!"

AJ smiled, his eyes hidden behind a new pair of sunglasses. "Nice to
see you, too,

Kaos."

The other Backstreet Boys came rushing over to their friend. Each of
them welcomed

back the "bad boy" of the group. "So, what have you all been up to?"
AJ asked, flashing his

chesire-cat smile.

Nick and Brian looked to eachother. Nick had wanted to tell the other
three his "news"

when AJ returned, but Nick didn't want to spoil their reunion. "Not
much. Just played video

games and blared my music, the usual." It wasn't a lie... exactly.

Day by day, Nick was trying to forget about his dead twin brother.
Only, the more

he tried to forget, the more he would have nightmares. Horrible
dreams, of him as a baby and

a bird-like monster swooping down and carrying him and his brother
off, and then his brother

would fall and fall until he could no longer see him; dreams of his
friends finding out about his

powers and hating him for it, even Brian; and worst yet, the
Backstreet Boys fans all forgetting

them, and turning into N*Sync fans... they mostly followed the same
cycle.

"Nick? You okay, man? You sure are quiet," AJ observed. "That's kind
of nice for

a change, I guess. Oh yeah! Kaos, I have to thank you."

"Thank me?" Nick stammered. "For what?"

"For helping me realize I had a problem," AJ smiled, taking off his
shades, revealing

his serious, deep brown eyes. "When I saw lightning strike you, and
then throw you against

that bench, I knew that I was drinking way too much. It was sort of
the last straw, and I'm glad

that it happened otherwise I would never have gotten the help I
needed."

Brian and Nick exchanged glances. Now was as good of a time to tell
the truth, anyway.

Just not in public. "About that... why don't we discuss it over lunch?
They don't feed you as much

on those airplanes as they used to," Nick said, putting an arm around
AJ's shoulders. "We'll go

to your favorite place..."

"Alright!" AJ beamed. "As long as your paying, Nicky!"

After a welcome home lunch at Mc Donald's, the five Backstreet Boys,
Kristen, Leigh

Anne and AJ's mother went to AJ's house to relax. "Feels good to be
home," AJ breathed.

"And we're glad to have you back, Alex," Mrs. Mc Lean smiled, hugging
her son for

the millionth time that day. "Why don't I go cook supper for all of
you guys? So you can catch

up?"

"We'll help you," Kristen and Leigh Anne followed her into the
kitched. "After all, we

have an army to feed here."

Once they had left, Nick looked to Brian, and Brian nodded
encouragingly. Nick

began, "Well, um, AJ, I found out something interesting while you were
gone... something that

would require your jokes to cheer me up."

"Oh?" AJ asked. "Something bad happened?"

"Not... exactly... but, yeah, I guess so." Nick stammered. "I've only
told Brian so far,

I hope none of you guys mind."

Kevin and Howie turned their attention to the young blond of the
group. "What's wrong,

Nick?" Howie asked, worried.

Nick sucked in a deep breath, and began his tale as if he had
rehearsed it all of his life.

He paused after telling them about his heritage, scared that they
would hate him for not being human. Instead, Brian put his hand on
Nick's shoulder, and he continued on, not leaving out any single
detail. Finally he finished, telling them about the Oracle and
discovering his twin brother had been dead for over six years.

"Wow," Kevin said, rubbing his temples and trying to comprehend what
Kaos had just told them. "That's a lot to swallow. It's a good thing
you at least told Brian, because you seem to have gone crazy over the
break!" He burst out laughing.

AJ smacked Nick's shoulder. "Man, that was classic! I can't believe
you thought of that one all by yourself!"

"Man, that was pretty good," Howie added.

Nick stared at the three of them, a hurt expression on his face. "You
don't believe me, guys?"

"So you're an alien? So we already knew that, Kaos!" AJ chuckled.

Brian opened his mouth to shut them up, but suddenly Nick stood up and
glared at AJ, Kevin, and Howie. "You really don't believe me? You
think I would joke about something like that?!" He pointed his finger
at AJ. "I'll show you!"

Brian gasped, and leapt toward Nick. "NO!"

A burst of electricity shot from his fingers, and before AJ could say
one obscenity the sofa the three of them sat upon vanished, and all
three of them landed hard on their asses. They all stared, gawking
with wide eyes and open mouths at Nick.

Nick turned quickly and ran off, towards the garage. Brian gave a mean
look at the three surprised (to say the least) band mates and rushed
off after his best friend.

"Nick, they didn't mean it," Brian said, catching up to him.

Nick didn't say anything, he was too choked up to speak. He thought
they were his friends. He thought they would understand. He climbed
into his Durango and shoved the key in, the engine coming to life with
a roar. Brian tried to flag his best friend out of the vehicle, but
Nick sped out of the driveway.

Brian sighed. He wasn't sure where Nick was headed, but he had an
idea...

Nick sped down the highway, his vision blurry with tears. He felt so
betrayed, he didn't know what to do. He wasn't even sure where he was
headed, until he pulled up the familiar house and stopped his vehicle.
He got out of his Durango, and headed to the front door. He paused to
collect himself, a rather difficult task at the moment. He knocked on
the door and waited.

Tiffany answered the door, and greeted him as warmly as ever. "Oh
Nick! I didn't think you were in the area! Come in!" Tiffany said,
between a barrage of kisses.

Nick smiled, feeling much better already. He followed her into her
house, and then down the hall to her bedroom. She shut the door and
looked him over, a determined look in her eyes. "You've been avoiding
me for weeks. I know that you wanted to spend time with your family,
but I missed you. Now I'm going to make up for it."

She attacked him, pinning him onto her bed and kissing him hard on the
lips, her blond hair surrounding him. He kissed her back, glad to feel
welcome somewhere. She pulled away from his kiss, looking down at him.
"So, what have you been up to?"

"So much has happened, I have to tell you everything," Nick said,
stoking back her long hair so he could see her face. "But you have to
promise that you will believe me."

"Why wouldn't I believe you, Nick?" Tiffany asked, her hands beginning
to fumble with his zipper.

He gently brushed away her hands from his pants, although regretfully.
"This is serious, I've missed you too, Tiff, but we have to talk
first."

She pouted, but nodded. "Okay, tell me what's on your mind." She
rolled off him, and laid on her side to face him as he spoke.

Again, he told her what happened, praying she wouldn't think it was
just a joke.

"So, all I have left of my family or my twin brother is in this box,
and in the crystal," Nick pulled the crystal from his shirt, and let
it dangle from his neck. "There's no way I can track them down because
I'm not from this planet."

Tiffany stared at Nick. "You are a Negaversian?" she asked, in a flat,
cold voice.

"Yes," he answered, studying her comforter with his eyes.

She suddenly jumped away from her bed, as if she had seen something
suddenly repulsive, like a spider or a bug. She stared at Nick in
horror. "You're... you're... NO!"

Tiffany screamed, and began to hyperventilate.

Nick sat up and looked at his girlfriend, confused. "What's wrong,
Tiff?"

"NO! DON'T CALL ME THAT!" She screamed, pointing a finger at him.

He got up from the bed and rushed over to her. She grabbed a baseball
bat and swung it toward him defensively. "NO! STAY AWAY!" Tiffany
bellowed, pointing the bat dangerously at Nick. "STAY AWAY YOU
FREAK!!!"

Nick stared at her, hurt beyond words. "What's wrong, Tiffany? I'm the
same old Nick, it's just the way I was born! Don't you understand?" He
tried to move closer to her, and she swung the bat hard. It connected
with his right shoulder with a sickening crack, and Nick stumbled
against the wall, pain radiating from his already injured arm.

He grabbed his injured shoulder with his left hand, and he could feel
blood running from the fresh wound. He looked to Tiffany, but he
couldn't recognize her at all. "What the fuck has gotten into you?"
Nick could feel the tears running down his face as he spoke. "I
thought that you loved me!"

"I would never love a freak like you," Tiffany spat distastefully.
"I'm calling the authorities."

She held the bat towards him as she side-stepped out of her room. He
could hear her running down the hall.

Nick groaned, the pain in his arm and his heart too great to drive
back to AJ's house. Why hadn't he listened to Brian's warnings?

He stumbled out of her bedroom, and began to limp down the hallway,
pain emanating all over his body. He slowly made his way down the
corridor, the pain almost knocking him unconscious. He could hear
Tiffany in the living room, quickly punching in numbers on the
telephone.

"Operator," he could hear the loud, feminine voice on the phone.

"I need an international line to South America, please. The military
base in Venezuela, and please hurry," Tiffany said in a hurried voice.

Nick began to stumble towards the door. He was shaking, he didn't know
what was going on, all he knew was that he was in danger here, and had
to get back to AJ's house FAST.

He opened the front door awkwardly, not used to using his left hand.
Although, he thought, he'd better get used to it from now on. He
rushed to his Durango, and had to lean up against it while he fished
his keys out of his pockets. Why, why, why hadn't he brought Brian
with him?!

Finally he dug out his keys, fumbled for the right one, and unlocked
his Jeep. He pulled himself painfully into his vehicle, and started it
up.

Tiffany suddenly appeared again at the front door, still wielding her
bat. She rushed toward Nick's Durango, a look of pure hatred twisting
her face to the point where Nick didn't recognize her. He wasted no
time pulling the stick shift into reverse and peeling out of the
driveway. Tiffany swung one last time, connecting this time with one
of his headlights. It shattered, but Nick sped off, not caring about
his damaged vehicle as much as he normally would.

He moaned in pain, speeding towards the highway. Nick struggled to
stay awake, and not fall into unconsciousness. The pain only seemed to
get worse, making his entire body ache. He could barely see, squinting
hard from the terrible pain. He gasped, it was beginning to get harder
to breathe.

He grabbed his sore arm again, it hurt a little less when he held the
wounded area. Both of his hands were off the steering wheel, and the
Durango pitched dangerously off the road, headed directly toward a
palm tree. Nick didn't have time to react. He saw the tree, and closed
his eyes hard. `I wish I was there!' he thought, and sucked in his
last breath...

Silence. Nick didn't hear the metal scraping, or anything. He could
suddenly hear birds chirping. He wondered what happened.

Slowly he opened his eyes. His Jeep was parked neatly in AJ's
driveway. He stared in disbelief. "No way," he said, shocked.

Brian, Howie, Kevin, and AJ rushed out of the house. "Nick! You came
back pretty fast! We didn't hear you come up the driveway!" Brian
rushed over to his best friend, worried. "Where did you go?"

Brian gasped when he saw Nick's shoulder. "Oh my God..."

"What happened?" Howie inquired, scared.

"Tiff-" Nick said, then passed out from shock.
