Standing in the Night
Chapter 8
The alarm clock was the first thing to wake her from the sweet dream she was having. One hand groggily felt over the articles on top of the bedside table before finding the alarm button and hitting the snooze button. The hand then fell limply to the floor has Lita opened her eyes and focused on the ceiling. The cracks and discolored paint was still there, but so was a new sound. The sound of someone humming and food cooking.
More awake now Lita sat up in the bed and looked towards the kitchen. There was definitely someone in there listening to the radio and singing along. Curious to who had gotten into her apartment yet filled with a pretty good idea Lita stood up and walked over to the kitchen.
And then he asked me, would I? Yes! Yes!
I put my arms around him. Yes!
And drew him down to me so he could feel my breasts!
Mina waved the spoon above her head has she danced in front of the stove. Inside the pan eggs cooked in a messy blob of yellow. On the radio Amber sang and cried out in ecstasy meeting the ecstatic notes of Minako.
It was this sight that Lita was greeted with when she peeked into the kitchen. It was also the sounds of Lita's laughter that woke Mina up from her daydream. She opened her eyes to see Lita leaning against the doorway clutching her stomach and laughing.
" What's so funny?" Mina asked growing defensive.
" You are. Just what I need before I have to go out. A little impromptu concert in my kitchen." Lita wiped away some imaginary tears of laughter and brushed past Mina into the kitchen.
" Well I'm sorry if my singing woke you."
" Oh it didn't," Lita replied leaning into the fridge.
" But I just happen to be in a cheerful mood today."
" Oh I can tell." Lita reached over Mina and pulled out a glass from the cupboard.
" It's not everyday that I get people giving me concerts in my kitchen."
" Well it's not everyday that I'm in love," Mina replied scrambling the eggs.
Lita very nearly spit out her orange juice but she kept it in and swallowed.
" Your in love?!"
" Yep and let me tell you it is one of the greatest things of all time."
" Who are you in love with? Darien?"
" Nope even better, Eric." Mina turned the eggs in the pain without looking up at Lita
" And who is Eric?"
" He works at the modeling shoot has the head hairdresser and I just spent an amazing two nights with him at his apartment. I mean it was like a dream to wake up in his arms and to see him sleeping next to me!" Mina sighed and looked over at Lita. " I really think that he is my destiny! My one and only like my soul mate in a way."
" And does he agree?" Lita opened the fridge door and slipped the carton orange juice back in.
" Of course he does!" Mina laughed and turned back to the eggs while Lita gave her a skeptical look.
She didn't say anything though, but instead slipped past Mina to go and get dressed. Inside the kitchen, the radio was turned up again. This time it was a slower song, fitting the quiet mood of Lita. She flipped through her closet before pulling out a midriff baring white top and a sky blue knit skirt.
" Hey Lita do you want some eggs?" Mina yelled from the kitchen.
" Yea! Sure!" Lita called back has she slipped on her white fish net stockings.
" You want some toast also?"
" No thanks just eggs!" Lita called back smoothing out the white stockings and looking around for her boots.
The boots were laying in a corner near her other shoes. Lita reached for them and pulled them on zipping them up before standing up and looking at her legs. White fishnet stockings, black leather boots with their cute spiked heels and her short blue skirt.
The white top lay crumpled on the bed has Lita pulled on a white lace bra and tucked her breasts into the cups.
" Here's your eggs." Mina walked out of the kitchen holding a plate of eggs.
" Just put them there," Lita replied indicating to the bedside table before she pulled on her top.
" Another night of work?" Mina took a seat on the couch and picked up her fork.
" Yea, I need to pay rent soon," Lita replied smoothing out her top.
Mina nodded and took a bite of her eggs. She chewed quietly before speaking again.
" Lita do you really enjoy turning tricks on the street?"
" That's a question to ask." Lita turned to the mirror and begin to brush out her hair. " The only reason I do this job is because of the money. If I had my choice I would be a million miles away from here."
" If you were a million miles away from here where would you be?"
" I don't know," Lita slowly brushed out the ends of her hair while she thought about it. Finally, she said, " I guess I would be living in a small town where everyone knows each other and everyone is friends. I would own my own little flower shop or maybe a restaurant and everyone would come to eat my food."
" That sounds like a nice dream, but why didn't you ever make it come true?" Mina took another bite of her eggs.
" Because when you're an orphan like me, you don't have a chance." Lita set the brush down with a thump and turned away from the mirror. She quickly grabbed her purse and a blue jeans jacket and headed towards the door brushing past Mina who had just finished the last of her eggs.
" Do you want to know my dream?" Mina asked setting the plate down next to her.
" What is it?" Lita turned back to her friend, one hand already resting on the doorway.
" To become a famous model and to fall in love."
" I think you are already on the way." Lita replied giving her friend a quick smile before opening up the door and walking out.

Serena ran her hands over her eyes smoothing them over her hair has the water pounded down on her. The water felt soothing against her skin washing away impurities and stress that had plagued her day.
One hand rubbed the soft sponge over her skin covering the pale whiteness with frothy bubbles of soap. All day she had listened to complaints, received phone calls, solved quarrels, laid out the first section of the magazine, and listened to Molly talk about her dream date with Melvin. All the while making Serena wish she wasn't alone and single.
The water pounded down on her from overhead. She looked up into the spray trying to see if it could tell her anything. She knew thoughts of love and wanting were silly, but deep inside this calm and sophisticated business womyn lay a little girl looking for love. The sponge was thrown down while Serena rinsed away the bubbles from her body and reached for the shampoo.
Outside of the shower she dried off her skin and slipped on an oversized white shirt. Her long blond hair was wrapped up in a towel and bare feet were slipped into a pair of pink slippers. Outside of the steamy bathroom Serena walked into the living room where a collection of pictures, layouts, and pieces of paper lay all over the floor waiting for her to work on them.
She only brushed past them and walked over to the balcony doors. The air that slipped in was cool and filled with the scent of autumn. Unmindful of the fact that she was only dressed in a shirt and a towel Serena stepped out onto the balcony and walked over to the rail. A small white table and chair sat out there near the corner. On the table, a clay pot of geraniums glowed with color against the blue sky.
Serena smiled at the flowers then rested her arms on the white clay railing. Down below the sounds of the city filled the air with traffic moving, horns honking, and the soft sound of voices talking. Serena looked down at the city then looked up at the buildings around her. High rise apartments like hers; some lofts here and there. Fancy buildings with people like her living in them, rich snobby people that she never associated with. In a way, people so much unlike her. Her hands gripped at her arms tighter has she moved up to look at the sky above them. A few white clouds still hung around while in the west near the horizon a thin line of pink was showing. The sun would set soon and darkness would come. She hated darkness since it felt so much like a cage holding her in. The only nights she was really at peace was when the moon was full. There would be a full moon next week. Already Serena was looking forward to it. She always felt at peace when the moon was full and everything was covered with it's silvery light.
But now it was daytime and she was slowly growing cold. Turning away from the rail Serena walked back into the apartment and closed the door behind her. The other side of the glass showing her figure disappearing around a corner to where the bedroom was so she could brush her hair.

" So what are your plans for tomorrow? We just got a new shipment of heroin in this morning and already Diego is after us to buy some." Greg's voice was low on the line. His eyes constantly searched around him looking to see if anyone was listening to his conversation.
" Name him a price except nothing to low. Then give him a place and time to fit your standards. A neutral location where our guys can back you up if needed."
" So your not going?"
" No, I have better things to do tomorrow. Mina wants me to come and visit her at the shoot. You know that stupid modeling thing of hers. So take Carlos with you and dig up some of the others. Just bring the money when you get it. I'll be waiting." Darien pressed the button to close his connection with Greg and placed his cell phone back inside his coat.
It was a lie about Mina wanting him to see the shoot. She had been gone all weekend; probably off with some guy she met at the club. Personally, he could care less if she was fucking someone else. He had better things to do.
The low slung red sports car sat at the curb drawing some attention from people walking past. Darien gave them all a look and opened the door to the car. His coat and sunglasses were thrown into the passenger seat before he climbed in himself and closed the door. The engine started up and Darien sped out of there leaving behind some curious onlookers.
Later on, he found himself in a park sitting on a bench overlooking the lake. The sun was beginning to set casting a gorgeous pink glow over everything. One hand rhythmically brought up a cigarette to his lips. He took a puff inhaling the burning fumes then exhaled blowing out a stream of gray smoke into the blue sky.
The lake was calm with only a few ripples showing here and there caused by the ducks swimming near them. They came close hoping he might have bread to feed them but the empty hands laying in his lap and the cigarette dangling from his lips spoke otherwise and they swam off again looking for someone else to feed them. There wasn't anyone else in sight though. The park was strangely empty, but it was so peaceful that he didn't care. He enjoyed the solitude offered to him.
Across the still lake apartment buildings rose into the sky, white, and black building with shining windows reflecting the sunlight. The kind of apartment buildings people with lots of money and to little time lived in. The kind of apartment he would never come to own. Someone of his type with all the money he owned was not allowed into an apartment like that. His money was dirty, covered in the filth of prostitution and drugs.
One hand flicked his cigarette into the lake while the other reached for his pack and drew out another one. The tiny flame shot up from his lighter and he inhaled the fumes before shoving his lighter back into his pocket and blowing out a stream of smoke. Who knew why he wanted to go and see Mina's shoot tomorrow? He should have been helping Greg make a sale so he could make even more dirty money. However, the thought of a certain blond haired womyn made him realize why he wanted to go to the shoot.
He wanted to meet her again, to talk to her, and to touch her hand. He wanted to see Serena. The very thought of her name made him feel something inside his blood. She was so beautiful, even more beautiful then anyone he had ever met. She wasn't like Mina or Setsuna or any of the countless girls he had slept with. She was something different and special. She was someone who made him feel like he was really living. She made him feel like his old self.
The smoke from his cigarette traveled up towards the sky then flowed downwards again onto a group of boys hiding behind a clump of bushes while the sounds of the party they were missing went on.
" Come on Darien it's just one little puff. It won't hurt you any to take one puff of a cigarette." He held out the cigarette towards him, kind of pushing it into his hand while Darien looked down skeptically.
" I really don't know about this Dan. Those things aren't good for you and there easily addictive." Darien replied looking up from the cigarette to his friend.
" Darien don't worry you won't get any disease from one little cigarette and you won't get addicted. It's just one puff." Dan pushed the cigarette closer to him while the others looked on.
" Alright but just one little puff," Darien replied taking the cigarette and bringing it to his lips.
It had started out has just one little puff but has the cigarette went around the circle he continued to take it. Until he had finished off three of them that night and he was soon smoking a pack a day. After that marijuana was introduced and he was soon hooked on that, then crack and cocaine. His grade dropped from the perfect A's he had once made to D's and F's. His counselor at school and the orphanage where he lived didn't know what to do with him. He just barely graduated high school but he didn't go to the ceremony. He was still passed out from hard night of partying when everyone was getting their diplomas.
After high school, he didn't go to college like he had planned. Instead he ran away and met a girl with dark hair and a sophisticated attitude. Together he and Setsuna opened a brothel in the bad part of Tokyo. While the business was still young, he took to selling drugs until he made something of a name for himself and he gathered under him people to do his drug trafficking for him. It was also around this time when he met a girl with blond hair and an innocent personality.
Minako Anio had come to apply for a job at Setsuna's brothel. She was hired to work at the brothel but she was also taken to become Darien's new girlfriend. He quickly broke her in teaching her how to survive on the streets. At first they had a hot relationship, but it slowly cooled to where it was today. They used each other for sex and that was it. Everything else was gone, she could come and go has she pleased and he could care less. Mina could fall in love with anyone she wanted now and he could do the same.
The sun was setting now and it was starting to get dark. Darien had a business appointment with Setsuna to keep so he had to get going. The half-finished cigarette was thrown into the lake next to the first one has he stood up and walked back toward his car.
Across the lake inside one of the fancy apartment buildings, he had been looking at. Serena sat on the floor in her living room laying out pictures for the magazine while she absently thought about the man with storm colored eyes Mina had introduced her too.
