Sailor Moon Fan Fiction ❯ Stars and the Moon ❯ Stars and the Moon ( Chapter 1 )

[ A - All Readers ]

Hey everybody! Here's little piece that came to me when I was listening to Songs for a New World. Definitely not something I would normally write, but I couldn't let it go. So here it goes.

I do not own Sailor Moon.*tear* or the lyrics to Stars and the Moon by Jessica Molaskey from Songs for a New World *tear*

Serena looked around her and sighed. It had been so long since she had had to do anything for herself, and yet it felt good. She grinned. It felt really good. Working her way around the boxes cluttering the floor of her new small apartment, she collapsed on the couch. At her feet was a small box labeled writing. With a smile, Serena picked it up and set it beside her. Opening it, she took out her very first diary. Pink with fuzzy bunnies running all over the place. Looking through the passages, she reminisced, laughing out loud at some of the more absurd musings of her young adult self.

Nearly an hour later, she turned pensive. “How could I have been so stupid?” she thought, reading the entry marked May 18.

Dear Diary,
I met a man without a dollar to his name
Who had no traits of any value but his smile

His name is Darien. I've seen him around before, and we've gotten along alright.

I met a man who had no yearn or claim to fame
Who was content to let life pass him for a while

In fact, for the past six months we've been dating! I haven't written for a while…Anyways, last night he told me he wanted to know where our relationship was going. If we had a future together. But…

And I was sure that all I ever wanted
Was a life like the movie stars led

After I told him, he just hugged me

And he kissed me right here, and he said,

"I'll give you stars and the moon and a soul to guide you
And a promise I'll never go
I'll give you hope to bring out all the life inside you
And the strength that will help you grow.
I'll give you truth and a future that's twenty times better
Than any Hollywood plot."

And though his words were beautiful and his eyes pulled me in, I just couldn't say I would stay with him.
And I thought, "You know, I'd rather have a yacht."
Looking back, Serena felt tears well up. She had never seen Darien after that. Continuing to turn the pages of the dairy, she saw how after he left, she had tried to fill the hole his disappearance had made in her heart with unfulfilling and terrible relationships. Putting the firs diary down, she picked up the next one. This was also pink, but with stars and moons. Skipping the first couple of entries, she turned it to the day she had met the second man she had almost loved.

Dear Diary,
I met a man who lived his life out on the road
Who left a wife and kids in Portland on a whim

His name is Seiya. He reminds of Darien in a way…

I met a man whose fire and passion always showed
Who asked if I could spare a week to ride with him

I didn't know what to tell him. It's so hard to say no…But at the same time, it's gotten a lot easier. Saying goodbye to Darien hurt me far more…

But I was sure that all I ever wanted
Was a life that was scripted and planned

Even his words reminded me of Darien. He looked at me when I told him no

And he said, "But you don't understand —

"I'll give you stars and the moon and the open highway
And a river beneath your feet
I'll give you day full of dreams if you travel my way
And a summer you can't repeat.
I'll give you nights full of passion and days of adventure,
No strings, just warm summer rain."

Just like before, I was so tempted to say yes, though the intensity in his eyes was not as magnetic.

And I thought, "You know, I'd rather have champagne."

Serena was assailed by the images that rushed through her as she remembered the bright, fun loving free spirit that she had never been able to forget, as well as the more serious, but equally laid back man that had haunted her innermost thoughts for years. Picking up the third plain black diary, she read.

Dear Diary,
I met a man who had a fortune in the bank
Who had retired at age thirty, set for life.

We met at a party that I went to with one in a series of rich, businessmen that I have seen since Darien and Seiya. Diamond is in no way like them, but he is every dream I've ever had.

I met a man and didn't know which stars to thank,
And then he asked one day if I would be his wife.

I wasn't ecstatic like I had always thought I would be at that moment.

And I looked up, and all I could think of
Was the life I had dreamt I would live

I didn't know what to say.

And I said to him, "What will you give?"

He told me what I expected to hear.

"I'll give you cars and a townhouse in Turtle Bay
And a fur and a diamond ring
And we'll be married in Spain on my yacht today
And we'll honeymoon in Beijing.
And you'll meet stars at the parties I throw at my villas
In Nice and Paris in June."
It was the only chance I would get.

And I thought, "Okay."
And I took a breath
And I got my yacht
And the years went by
And it never changed
And it never grew
And I never dreamed
And I woke one day
And I looked around
And I thought, "My God...
I'll never have the moon."

And so I called my lawyer and we quietly got a divorce. He had become discontent as well, so he didn't fight it, and he was willing to give me as much money as I needed. In fact, he offered half of everything. I took a quarter. Thank god that we never had children. We were only married a little over two years. It's been a year and a half now. Last I heard, he had married again early this year to Emerald, his long time friend.

Closing the diary, Serena went back to work. A year later, Serena opened her brand new pink and white diary, and sitting down on the bed she wrote,

Dear Diary,

I met a man that I thought I'd never see again. Two of them actually. I saw Seiya first. It seems that he went back to his wife and kids and begged for forgiveness and was taken back. I met them, and it hurt to know that that they had what I thought I would get when I married Diamond. When we said our goodbyes, Seiya pulled me aside and said, I would have given you the stars and the moon, but even then you loved someone else. Find him and be happy.” So that's what I did. And now I have the stars and the moon and so much love I think I might burst…

“Serena?” a voice called from the doorway. “What are you doing?”

“Oh, nothing love. Just christening my new journal.” She answered, placing it gently on the bedside table before going over to him and wrapping her arms about him. “I love you, you know that?”

“And I love you. Now let's get to bed. We need our rest.” He replied with a leer.

“Rest. Right…” But she complied, laying down as he followed suit. And as the night deepened, Serena Shields, content to be in the arms of the man who had stolen her heart from the first, fell asleep thinking, “I have the moon.”
