Sweet Little Lies

Chapter Four

by Devon Masterson

"Haruka?" Michiru asked.

Haruka looked up from her sketches for ad. "Yeah?"

"Let's go do something," she replied as she put down her cross-stitch that she had been working on for Hortaru. She had been working on the same stitch for the last two hours and not getting anywhere. She need to a distraction something to make the moving on process easier. "I don't care. I just want to hang out with you. It's been like months since we've really done something together."

"Well I figured you were busy with the orchestra," Haruka commented as she put down her pad.

"I'm doing anything now," Michi said as she stood, "let's go to the movies."

"Ok, let's go," Haruka replied as she stood. She ran her hands through her bangs.

"Great." The two friends went to the foyer and put on their shoes and left. "I noticed that you let your hair grow out. What made you not cut it?"

Haruka smiled, "I thought it was time for a change." She looked in the side view mirror as her long hair blew in the wind. It was longer than Michi's now.

"A new girl I see," Michi noted as she looked at her bestfriends eyes. "That would explain all the changes. She's trying to impress someone! I'm so happy for you, Haruka. I'm glad you found someone too!"

"No actually, I'm just concentrating on work," Haruka commented. "There hasn't been anybody since you."
"Really…I…"
"Don't worry about it, Michi," Haruka soothed as she saw her friend close to tears. "Right now there isn't a woman in my life that I'm interested in."

"You haven't had sex in a year?"

"I wouldn't go that far…"
Michi smiled, "Oh I see. I guess old habits die hard."

"If you only knew what I've been up to, Michi." "Something like that," Haruka commented aloud.

An hour later they were sitting in the movie theater, watching the previews. "Would you look at them, they need to get a room?" Haruka muttered disgusted, as she looked a couple kissing two rows in front of them.

The couple broke apart and the guy stared at them evilly. Michiru blushed in the darkness and the couple turned around looking at the screen. "I'm going to get some popcorn and soda," Michiru whispered as she started to get up.

"I'll get it. The line is probably ridiculous now and I've seen this movie before you haven't," Haruka replied as she stood. "I'll be back."

Michi nodded as she sat back and watched the movie as it started. She couldn't believe how quickly he had moved on. It had only been a month since they stopped seeing each other and here he was with some other woman. She eyed the woman as she got up and left the theater probably for a snack. Michi's eyes widened as she realized that person she thought was a woman was actually a man. "So he's bi, I never would have thought…but then it's not like I can talk."

"It's been awhile, Ru-chan," Malachite commented as he sat down beside her.

"Apparently," she remarked as she folded her arms. "But then it's not like we had anything important just casual sex."

"I wouldn't call it casual," he replied. "I'm just not the serious type. Plus Zoicite and I've been together for as long as I can remember. Besides you're here with someone else as well."
"Haruka and I are friends. You, however, are an asshole," She commented as dignified as she possible could. Part of her wanted to launch him into the atmosphere so he could land on his stupid head. "And I hope he leaves you." Michiru stood up and walked out of the theater.

"Where are you going?" Haruka asked as she came up with the popcorn and two sodas.

"Let's go somewhere else," she said as she started for the door.

Zoicite stood and his arms around Malachite. "I'm not in the mood," he replied as he pushed him away. Ever since the night at the theater he had been in some kind of funk and couldn't shake it. Why should he care what Michiru was doing and who she was with. She was just another chick that gave him a good time as far as he was concerned. A good time for over a year. Why did she have to be so damn charming and beautiful. His mind kept wondering to the last time the were together before they had the fight. The whole was act was phenomenal. Nothing seemed to satisfy him after that night. Neither Zoicite or his black book collection.

He couldn't stop thinking of Michiru. He even dialed her number a couple of times to hear her voice after he blocked the call of course. "Damn her," he thought. He fell in love with her. Not what was he going to do. So many things had happened to permenantly screw them up. The whole thing just put him a bad mood.

"I thought you might want to relax," Zoicite said softly. He seemed to be losing control of everything. Things had changed between them in the last year. Well he was the one who really changed, but he still couldn't stand up to Malachite.

"If I want to relax then I'll let you know," he snipped.

Zoicite sucked in his cheeks in anger. He was getting tired of being the bitch all the time. Malachite was going to respect him. "Bye, Malachite," he replied as he picked up his jacket and left. He was too angry to say what he wanted right now. He need someone to talk to.

"Great," Malachite replied as he heard the door slam. He had alienated the only person that tolerated him. He started to go after him when he sat back down. What was he doing? Zoicite would come back the way he always did when he had tantrum of sorts. He had gotten better about being snippy while he was with Michiru, in fact he hadn't done it in about a year. Even though he stayed out all night, Zoicite came back and was quite eager to please. That was the way he was, eager to please. Perhaps that was what made him boring and Michiru exciting. She took chances and surprised him. She was not afraid to tell him what she thought and match him. She was his equal and he had lost her.

Malachite walked over to a window and looked out he wondered what Michi was doing.

In another part of town, Michiru looked out the window and smiled as she watched bird sing in the tree by her window. She had just awoken from her nap. It did wonders for her. She felt that she could approach things from another prospective. She placed her elbows on the window sill and sighed when she saw something that made her sit up. "That's Malachite's boyfriend…" she whispered in shock as she watched him go to the garage in the back of the house.

Michi rushed into the bathroom to get a better look. There was something odd going on. She watched as the two exchanged in conversation. Haruka moved to hug him. "They know each other. Why didn't she mention it in the theater?" she wondered when she suddenly remembered something. Both of them left the theater almost at the same time and when Haruka came back with the popcorn her hair was no long in a braided ponytail. She had been so upset that she didn't notice at first. Haruka rarely dealt with men except to prove a point that she was just as talented. Darien was the only man she bothered to exchange conversation with and that was just out of politeness. This romance explained a lot, the change in appearance and the distance between them.

She was shaken out her reverie when she heard shouting and saw Zoicite stalk off angrily. They probably fought about her job promotion to the States. Michiru almost ran to her best friend's aid when she paused. Haruka was a very private person, she would come to her when she was ready to tell her what happened. Just how long was she going to wait.

"What's wrong?" Malachite asked as Zoicite sat on the side of the bed. "I never seen you so withdrawn even when we…"

"Do you love me?" Zoicite interrupted.

"He must still be mad at me." Malachite smirked, "You know how I feel about you."

"You haven't told me in over a year that you loved me," Zoicite replied. "You're dodging the question. Do you love me?"

"Yes," Malachite answered.

"Why?"

"Well you're gorgeous and you're always here for me," he answered. "You know what I like."

"I see," Zoicite commented as he stood up. He walked into the bathroom and slammed the door.

"Honey, come out," Malachite called through the door. Zoicite didn't answer as he knocked on the door. After several minutes, he started knocking again. "You're scaring me. What are you doing in there?" he asked as he started to panic. He couldn't afford to lose two people. In response to his last comment, Zoicite stepped out of the bathroom wearing a pair of jeans and white tank tee. "You cut your hair?"

"I thought it was time for a change," he remarked as he sported his new short haircut. He ran his hands through it.

Malachite wrinkled his nose. "I like it better long. It'll grow back though."

"And I will cut it when it does," Zoicite replied as he put his baseball cap on his head. "And just like my hair I'm cutting you loose."

"What?" Malachite asked. "Look, whatever I did I'm sorry."

"Be a man," Zoicite replied as he walked away. "Besides I'm sure that whatever-her-name-is that you've been seeing will love to have you all to herself."

Malachite's mouth opened in shock and then he clamped it shut. Zoicite was right. It was time to cut things loose, he loved Michiru "Well, Ru-chan, this was you've been waiting for." The question would she take him back.

Michiru sat back in her seat as the plane heading for a new life soared through the air. She had given her notice to the orchestra the day before. She was glad that he was no where in sight. She had heard that he had been called away on business. She would be long gone before he found out she was gone, not that he'd care. He was in a safe relationship again. He and Zoicite deserved each other.

"What are you thinking about?" Haruka asked softly as she opened her eyes.

"Thinking about you and the baby," she answered. "I had never seen you so happy."

"I don't want to talk about it," Haruka remarked as she turned her head. "The baby and I will be fine without him."

"I'll make sure of that," Michiru commented as she patted her friend's hand in assurance. "I don't want you to lose your baby the way I lost mine."
"What?" she asked as she turned around. "You were pregnant…when did this happen?"

"About 6 weeks ago," she answered softly.

"Who…I'm sorry. I shouldn't pry."

"It's ok, I'm ready to talk about it now," she replied. "Besides you kind of know him…well his partner."

"What are you….Malachite."

Michiru nodded. "It seems birds of a feather really do flock together."

"You mean snakes."

"And yet we were foolish enough to love them anyway," Michiru commented. "It sounds kind of like a punch line."

"Yeah it does. Ha ha ha….why does it hurt so much, Michi?"

"I don't know," she replied as the plane veered left. "I don't know."

"What do you mean she's gone?" Malachite thundered as his secretary relayed the message from the concert hall.

"She gave notice a week ago that she was leaving."

"Did she say why?"

"She told them she was needed else where," the secretary replied.

"I need her here," he said mostly to himself.

"I tried her house sir and the phone company says that the number is no longer in service. Also the flowers you sent two days ago were returned on the basis that there was no one at the residence."

"What do you mean no one at the residence?"

"A neighbor said that the girls that lived there moved out. To the States he thinks."

Malachite sat back in his chair. "You can leave now, Yohko."

"Hai," she replied as she bowed. She had never seen him in such dire straits. The woman he was searching for must be the one.

"She left," he thought as he placed his face in his hands. He couldn't have really lost her forever. He tapped his desk trying to rack his brain. "Yohko, get me in touch with Nichi Hiro." If anyone could find her, Hiro could.
