A hard slap across my face left my cheek throbbing as I was sent sprawling onto the floor.
"What did you say, Ethereal?!" Malor's demand came out ragged and impatient--furious.
I lifted my body from the cool marble, the swirled pattern of black and silver dotting my vision. My lips curled back in a feral smile as a trickle of blood slipped down the corner of my mouth. One of Malor's many gaudy rings had cut me when he'd smacked me. I caught a drop of blood on a slim finger and raised it to him, like an offering.
"I said that...your reign will soon end." My eyes (usually referred to as the Eyes of Enchantment--or Eyes of Hell, depending on the people speaking) shifted to his. Black bottomless eyes held his for less than a moment before he was able to tear his gaze away from mine, his fists clenching.
I was sure that the seams of his satin top were near to tearing open with the way he was breathing--nevermind the bloated stomach from one too many generous meals and lack of exercise.
Court games. Court disasters. Everything in the Court of Malor of the Syndir province had been corrupted of its ways. What should have been a court of nobility--of kindness and grace--was nothing more than a court of the most perverted definition of "nobility." I mocked the time, this era.
Just wait, I thought. Give it time and this would end.
Malor lifted his hand to swing it across me once again at the sight of the gleam in my eyes. But, he hesitated when he saw that I was smiling. Shaken, he turned away and murmured pompously, "I am King here. My reign ends when I will it so. You will speak no more of what you saw in your dreams of Elisen. No dream such as that, conjured up in any place--even Elisen--can come true. Not as long as I am sovereign of Syndir."
He turned to face me. "Your dreams of our future are fallacies," he spat, his cobalt eyes hard as he looked upon Syndir's Dreamcaster.
An urgent knock on the door took his attention away and I looked out the window of the tower, towards the horizon where the sun had begun it's descent. Red and orange slashed the sky, disrupting the endless blue.
One day, I mused. One day all of us would be gone. We would all be taken to our Future by more than Time and Death--it would be by our own petty greed and corrupted ways. However, one day a minute number of man and magic would walk this plain with the Hybrid--the future foretold...the bane and horror of our existence--and would help to reform our ways, vanquishing those whom had been tainted.
In the stream of my consciousness I listened to the messenger and the message, the court's latest events. He spoke, relaying urgently to his Majesty his news.
"Your Majesty, dire news! Your son has returned from his town escapade, but he is ill with some form of unknown disease. We fear the worst." The young man bobbed his head nervously and his eyes darted around the room, waiting for his Grace's reactions. He was wringing his hands as he shifted from foot to foot and looked anxiously at Malor. Upon lack of an immediate reply, he stumbled on, "He's in his chambers, if you'd like to speak with him."
From my spot by the window I thought aloud. I spoke as the witness to this shift of time. I spoke as the bearer of news from the Hybrid. I, Ethereal Rinalveus, spoke to let Malor know that his time was over.
Malor turned to me, his eyes flashing.
"And so the reign of the 'Great Malor' declines. And thus the beginning of the Hybrid's time unfolds."
