Karin-chan ran as quickly as she could down the dark hallway. Her body was dangerously close to tumbling over but she wouldn't be able to resist the tiredness for much longer. The only thing that kept her awake and running was the thought that if she did fall asleep, she would never wake up again.
That was the fear every night at Sister Margerie's training school. If you closed your eyes for a second, you might never open them again.
Which was why Karin hadn't slept for four straight days. She was the newest student there and she had been cruelly taught the way of life there. Right now she was breaking rule 45B, although she didn't know what was exactly wrong with being late for class, everyone was at one point.
Not at this school, though, she thought.
Karin burst through the metal doors and her breath caught in her throat. She was balancing off the edge of a cliff. Another test, she thought.
Sure enough, a hologram loomed towards her, the cruel face of sister Margerie stared into Karin's beaten eyes. You need some rest, Karin? The sister said, in a cold, hollow voice.
Karin gulped and tried to fight the darkness, she tried so hard to keep her eyes open…
She swiveled half the way around and fell into the dark hole. She was asleep before she could scream.
Serena awoke and shivered. She was warm but she could almost feel her toes freezing in the cold. She looked across the room and watched Darien silently. He was so asleep and so assured that the war was over. After two long years of quiet, he had finally gotten some sleep that wasn't racked with nightmares and death.
If only Serena could say the same for herself.
Every night, she awoke, frozen but on fire. Every night, she was crying and wishing that it would end.
Only, it was over… right?
She rolled back into her bed and buried herself underneath the covers. It isn't fair, she thought, everyone can sleep easily except for me…why?
Darien sighed and sat up in his bed. Serena was worrying again.
He walked over to her and put his arm on her shoulder. “Serena…” he began.
“Darien?” she asked quietly.
“Yes?”
“Do you love me?”
“Serena…”
“Do you love me?”
“Yes… I love you.”
“Do you think I'm crazy?”
“What?”
“Every night, I can't help but feel like there's someone crying out in pain, or their heart is washed over by defeat…” Serena said quietly closing her eyes, “But… It's all over, right?”
Darien wished that he could tell her that it was over. But he knew that it would never be over. This world would never be without pain. This world would never be without hate, and sorrow…
“Yes. It's over, Serena.”
Serena smiled and closed her eyes. She rested her head on Darien's shoulder and fell asleep for the first time. She fell asleep without fear because she believed Darien…
Darien sighed and tried not to think of the darkness in his heart. The part of him that knew there was something bad coming…
