The Sol Empire
A Distant Past........
Serenity looked out upon the vast continuum of space, feeling the emptiness swallow her up. To any normal mortal, the feeling of emptiness in space would have been expected, but the Queen Serenity was anything but normal. She reached out over the astral plane, searching for a presence that was no where to be found. She felt a wave of confusion wash over her. Where was she? She ought to be here somewhere. Queen Serenity could feel no presence, and the sense of doom that came along with that emptiness couldn't be ignored.
It was too dark.
The feeling frightened her, and that was something, considering how much it took to frighten the high monarch of the moon.
*Hello* she called out.
*My Lady?*
No response.
There was always a response.
Since the dawn of time, she had been here.
The Lady of the Light had disappeared.
..................................
As the walls are closing in, and the colours fade to black...
as my eyes are falling fast and deep into me.
and I follow the tracks that lead me down,
and I never follow what's right.
and they wonder sometimes when they see all the sadness and pain,
the truth brings to light
cause I can't see no reason,
what is blind cannot see.
cause I want what is pleasing.
all I take should be free.
What I rob from the innocent ones,
what I'd steal from the womb....
If I cried me a river of all my confessions,
would I drown in my shallow regret?
as the walls are closing in, and the colours fade to black
and the night is falling fast and deep into the sea.
and in the darkness all that I can see,
the frightened and the weak
are forced to cling to mistakes they know nothing of
at mercy are the meek.
cause I can't see no reason,
what is blind cannot see.
cause I want what is pleasing.
all I take should be free.
what I rob from the innocent ones,
what I'd steal from the womb....
If I cried me a river of all my confessions,
would I drown in my shallow regret?
The Shadow King watched over his most prized possession with watchful eyes. One slip, and she would escape, turning her light upon him. He grinned at the thought. He simply could not allow that to happen. Imagine what kind of world he could create with no light? A haven of darkness, chaos and destruction. That sounded remarkably appealing.
Sol struggled within her bonds. *How could I have let this happen?* She thought. *How is this possible.* The Lady of Light had been captured, and by a mere mortal at that. The bonds that held her were somehow blocking out her power. It should not have been impossible. The flame haired goddess glared up at her captor.
"Well Sir, now that you've captured me, what do you plan to do with me?"
His grin said it all. She laughed.
"I beg you to try it kid. One touch and you're history." She allowed her power to illuminate her form, just for effect.
It was a well-known fact that mortal hands could not touch the Goddess of Light. The tales clamed that those who had tried had disappeared in a flash of light, burnt to a crisp.
"I believe milady, that you'll find my plans for you to be far more sinister." He replied. He turned to his right, where a young woman had appeared from within the shadows. She held a miniature chest in her hands, a chest with the most familiar markings...
"I believe you'll recognize this," He stated. "It once belonged to the fabled Adair, creator of time and light."
Sol gasped as recognition hit her. That box....
"You don't mean? Where did you find that? HOW did you find that..." She stammered.
"Oh, so you do recognize it?" He grinned. "Then I suppose you already know what I have in store for you."
All the colour drained from the lady's face. Her aura of light disappearing.
"I won't let that happen!" She cried, even as she knew that her fate was sealed.
"You don't have much of a choice milady. With the talisman of Adair, I can take your power from you, and begin to re-create the universe as I see fit. With those bonds on, there is nothing you can do to stop me."
She looked up at him then, pale and withdrawn.
"That is where you are mistaken."
..................................
Serenity screamed as she felt the energy being sapped from within her. Across the Universe, the planetary magic began to fade.
*Daughter! Are you alright?!* Serenity called.
*Mother! What is happening?!* The Moon Princess replied. Her tone was weak, and it took every ounce of strength she had to return her mother's mental call.
*I don't know. It seems that all the light is fading. Everything is black.*
*But, that can only mean...*
*Hush daughter, I'll contact Setsuna, she will know for sure*
..................................
Serenity could feel nothing; time as it was came to a halt as Setsuna made her presence known. The immortal Guardian of Time, Lady of Time bowed down before the Queen.
*You called for me Milady?*
*Setsuna, what is happening? I cannot feel Sol's presence anywhere!*
*My sister is fighting a battle against the Shadow King, a mortal evil from a distant galaxy. He seeks to obtain my sister's powers so that he can rid the universe of all light. I fear that if he is successful, life as we know it will cease to exist forever.*
*Is there nothing that can be done?*
*Only Sol will know your Highness.*
*Surely the Imperium Crystal...*
*My apologies, Highness, but the Imperium Crystal is useless without light. If Sol is destroyed, so to will the crystal be, and all of the other magic's connected to it.*
*Oh my.*
*Have faith, Highness. I'm sure Sol will know what to do.*
..................................
Sol knew in a heartbeat that she was about to make the sacrifice of her life. *I can't believe I'm doing this. There must be some other way...*
The blackness inched ever closer to her.
As the walls are closing in, and the colours fade to black....
Now was as good a time as any. Though she knew without doubt that he would be angry. Perhaps angry enough to...
She couldn't think thoughts like that. If she allowed him to gain control of the awesome power she held inside her, there would be no hope left anywhere. The few lives it would cost to save the universe were worth it, in that fact she had to believe
I am going to die.
Never before had she had to face the thoughts of mortality. She'd been around since before the dawn of time, created to serve as the key force in the creation of life. Setsuna had been born shortly afterward, and together, they'd spent eternity in an immortal dreamscape. She always been present on the astral plane, and now....
Without pondering it any longer, Sol let out a horrific scream. The blast of energy released from within was enough to break through the prison of darkness surrounding her.
She transformed herself into a blast of pure energy, releasing her power into the depths of the universe, never to be captured again.
The agony of release was a million times more horrific than she was prepared for. She was assaulted with a barrage of human emotions
Pain, Anger, Fear, Hatred, Sadness, Grief, Joy, Love.....
The woman collapsed in a heap of raw, mortal flesh. The tears that flowed freely down her cheeks were the first she'd ever shed. She felt so weak, so tired.....
She looked up into the furious eyes of the Shadow King, who'd lost his only chance at eternal darkness.
With one swift stroke, he ripped the life from the woman in front of him.
Sol tried to cry out, but it was too late. The darkness surrounded her, this time with no barriers to stop it. Her eyes faded from their glorious amber hue, to a dull grey. Her breath rattled one last time in her chest before she was plunged into an eternal sleep.........
..................................
*NO!!!*
Trapped inside the realm of time, Setsuna could only watch as her beloved sister's life was torn from her body.
The Guardian of time collapsed and allowed herself to cry for the very first time.
It would not be the last
..................................
Serenity reached out for the Imperium Crystal. The sacrifice made by the Lady of Light that day had not gone unnoticed. With her last breath, Sol had given away her immortality, her essence. Her power was still there, only existing as a natural aura throughout the galaxy, instead of inside one entity.
But the battle was not yet over.
In a rage, the Shadow King had attacked the Moon Kingdom. Even the power of the Sailor Senshi was no match for his wrath. The Imperium Crystal was their last hope.
Serenity murmured the words that would activate the crystal's power, drawing a circle around herself as she did so. The blast from the crystal was as bright as ever, and it pierced straight through the Shadow King's shield.
Then faded.
The Queen of the Silver Millennium stared at her enemy in shock. *How can this be?!*
She watched din horror as her children were slaughtered. The Sailor Senshi forced into defeat, as the King ripped away their lives, one by one.
She watched as the Solar, her daughter's betrothed, stuck a blow to one of the Shadow warriors, only to find himself surrounded in the same deadly black mist that had taken the lives of the Senshi. He looked at the Princess Serenity one last time, love shining in his eyes. "I love You!" he cried, before surrendering to the darkness.
"No! Stephan!"
The Queen witnessed her daughters plunge over into oblivion, following her lover to the last.
*All hope is lost* Serenity focused once again on the Shadow King. She knew it was her turn to go, but she wouldn't until she'd done one last deed.
With the last of her strength, Serenity sent her children into the future, to be born anew.
"Highness!" The Queen looked up and saw her advisors. *How did they escape? No matter.*
"Luna, Artemis. I have a new mission for you." She began.
The two looked at their Queen in shock. "New mission?" they whispered.
"I want you to go forward and take care of the children. Guide them. They cannot face the enemy without your help. When the time is right, we will win this fight."
They nodded, understanding. There was no hope now. This was a battle to be won in the future, on Earth.
The Shadow King laughed. "I beat you here in this time, Highness. I can most certainly take care of that brat daughter of yours in the future."
"You forget your mortality Sir." Serenity stated simply. "We all must die eventually, even you."
"Perhaps, Serenity. But, as surly as you can send your daughter into the future, so can I. I simply chose to do it the old fashioned way." He roared. 'As long as there is light, there will be the shadow behind it." With that, he turned his power onto her.
She felt no fear, only peace. As just before her death, she'd had the time to make one last wish. She took one word with her into oblivion. A word of light, and hope.
Sol
