The Vessels of Fate [Chapter Two]
By Monikku
The after noon sun shines brightly through the sheet glass windows.
Sitting alone at a large, round booth in Crown Fruit Parlor, Rei's
expression is blank. She is staring off into the distance, lost to the
world around her.
Makoto, entering the parlor alone, sits across from Rei. She rests her
hands on the table as she eyes Rei curiously for a moment. Rei is
still unaware of Makoto's presence. Her eyes seem, to the tall, auburn
haired girl, utterly vacant.
With concern shadowing Makoto's features, she slowly waves a hand in
front of Rei's face, "Come back, Rei-chan." she says in a slow, low,
deliberate voice.
Rei, shaking off the vestiges of a space-out worthy of Usagi in math
class, rubs her face with her hands, "Ah, sorry about that, Mako-chan.
I spaced out there for a moment."
Makoto raises her eyebrows playfully, "An understatement." her
expression quickly changes back to protective as she notices
how tired Rei appears, "Are you sure you are all right, Rei-chan?"
Rei smiles reassuringly, "Yes, I'm fine. No need to worry."
Before Makoto can press Rei, Minako, Usagi, and Ami appear before
them. Makoto swiftly moves to the center of the booth's circle,
allowing room for Ami to scoot down the booth, seating herself next to
Makoto. Usagi takes her place next to Ami. As Minako is about to shoo
Rei further into the booth, she stands up.
"Leaving?" Minako inquires, now next to the standing Rei.
"No, but I will have to soon, so I want the end." comes the reply.
Minako sits down and slides across the seat, allowing room for Rei. Rei
then sits next to the girl. As she does so, her arm lightly brushes
against Minako's causing her to intake a breath. Though none of
the others seem to notice.
"What is wrong with me?" Minako mutters softly to herself.
"What?" Rei asks.
Minako smiles brightly, "Nothing!"
"How long do you think Chibi-Usa will be with us this time,
Usagi-chan?" Makoto asks, leaning against the table, drawing all of
the girl's attention to her, much to Minako's relief. "Well," Usagi
begins, "the letter said it was a vacation for her. I think she just
missed us."
"She missed Hotaru-chan." Ami states. Usagi nods.
"It must be lonely for a young girl like her to be the only child in
the palace." Minako interjects. All of the girls then nod their
agreements. Each one, in the back of their minds, realising the
implications of the statement.
"She really enjoyed the welcoming picnic!" Usagi says, in an attempt to
lighten the sudden tension among her friends.
"That's good, Usagi-chan" Makoto smiles. Again, the girls nod in
agreement.
As they continue their conversation, Rei tunes the four out. Closing
her eyes, she rests her head in her hands. Her head is pounding,
feeling as though something were trying to claw it's way right out of
the front of her skull.
Noticing this, Usagi leans forward and asks, "Are you all right,
Rei-chan?" her voice drenched with concern.
"Yes, Usagi," Rei replies, "It's just a little headache. I've been
through worse." Rei inhales deeply as the pain slowly, achingly
travels to just above her eyes. Swallowing, as if in an attempt to
consume the pain itself, Rei rises. "I should leave. Lots of chores to
do at the shrine." Rei smiles, "I will see you all later." then
quickly departs.
Usagi moves to follow after Rei, but is stopped by Ami touching her
shoulder. "Usagi-chan, we should leave her alone now." Minako nods in
agreement adding, *"Pursuing her would only make her angry."* Ami
continues on, "If you want, we can all check on her later." Pulling
her arm back, Ami finishes, "In the meantime, why don't you tell me
how your physics exam went?"
Usagi falls into her seat, her shoulders slumping in utter defeat, "I
think I would rather deal with an irate Rei."
-------------------------
The walk back from the Fruit Parlor feels like a stroll through poison
tipped thorns for Rei. The pounding, burroughing pain in her head
worsens with every step, nearly crippling her at times. When she
thinks she can take no more, it subsides just enough for her to carry
on. It pulls and pushes at her as though the pain is calculatedly
manipulating her, as if it has a mind of it's own.
Rei walks up the steps, the pain fades more and more as she nears the
shrine. By the time she reaches the entrance, her headache is gone
completely. "Thank you, Gods." Rei mutters to herself.
---------------------------
After changing into her priestess clothes, and doing various chores inside of the
shrine, Rei goes to sweep the front walk. One of the many almost ritualistic tasks of
her day. Rei, free of pain, is finally able to take in a deep, unburdened breath,
appreciating the sunny day, and allowing the sweet smells of spring to fill her lungs.
While sweeping away the fallen leaves, she hears familiar tappings.
"Rei-chan!" Usagi yells from across the yard. Usagi, breathing slightly heavy from
the climb, makes her way over to Rei with three girls in tow. "How are you feeling?"
"I told you, Usagi" Rei smirks over Usagi's apparent worry, "It was only a
headache. The pain was gone before I even stepped into the shrine."
"Ah! That's good!" Usagi responds, her breathing slowly returning to some
semblance of normal.
"I'm glad you are all right." Minako says as she walks closer to the Miko.
"Really, you all worry and overdramatise entirely too much." responds Rei.
Minako turns to her friends as she responds in a cheerful, joking tone, "That's
what friends are for, right?" she puntuates the statement with a wink.
"If you are truly so worried for my health, you can always feel free to help with the
shrine chores. I'm sure it would keep me from getting headaches in the future.
Actually, I think I feel one coming on right now." Rei lifts her right arm to her head,
resting the back of her hand to her forehead. Her left hand still holding onto her
broom. "Minako, Usagi, would you mind sweeping the steps for me? All 200 of
them?" Rei retorts as she dangles the broom in their direction.
Minako and Usagi simultaneously "Bidaa!" their tongues dangling from their
mouths as Ami and Makoto giggle at the antics of the three.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------< br /> * Aww, isn't it cute how Minako quotes her kitty? ^_^
