Anya looked over her shoulder as the back door to the kitchen opened with a bang. Her eyebrows went up a little as she saw who had come in.
“You wear the oddest things for a farmer, Xan,” Anya remarked, taking in her sister's attire of a black leather bustier, leather pants and boots.
“Animal husbandry, not farmer, Sunshine,” she said, leaning over to kiss her sister's cheek. “Remember, what I breed has a nasty tendency to bite. Where's Rei? I need to talk to her about something.”
“She's talking to Ming, I think.”
“She probably already knows then.”
“Knows what?”
“Some more of those weird things that Ming used to hunt are roaming around again apparently. They got one of my prize breeders last night. How is beyond me, all things considered. Pisses me off. Pisses Diablo off that they got one of his girls. The clutch is safe though and he took off after them this morning at dawn so there may not be anything to worry about anyway. But it isn't a bad idea to take precautions just in case. Wish I could see Ming. I miss him. Annoys the hell out of me that I can feel them and send them on but not see them. Gotta be kinda weird for Rei though, having her husband's ghost around. Not really conductive for finding a new man if the old one is still hanging around.”
“Probably not. I wonder what Hakkai thinks of it or if he even knows,” Anya said, turning away to hide the mischievous smile that had suddenly formed on her lips.
“Hakkai? Okay, spill it, little sister,” Xan said, eyes narrowing dangerously. “Who's Hakkai?”
“Just someone who's staying here. That Rei likes. A lot. Who also likes her. A lot. Right now they're dancing around the subject and trying to deny the fact that they should be shagging eachother stupid.”
“Oh, reeeeaaalllly? Huh, it's about damn time. Ming's been dead for six years now. I was beginning to worry about her.”
“Weren't we all? Go out front and grab a table, I'll bring you some lunch,” Anya said, nodding her head toward the doors to the dining room.
“Sure,” Xan said, shoving the doors open and stepping out into the other room.
Anya waited five seconds and grinned evilly upon hearing the word, “DAMN!” from a male and a female voice. Xan stuck her head back into the kitchen and smiled at her sister. “You are evil. That's why I love you.”
“His name's Gojyo, in case you're wondering.”
“At least I'll know what to scream later,” Xan said, going back into the dining room.
Anya was still laughing when Rei came back into the kitchen. “What's so funny?”
“Our sister.”
“Which one?” Rei said, sorting through some of the spices she'd bought from Miriam.
“The crazy one.”
Rei frowned a little, wondering how she'd missed someone whose aura was as strong as Xan's. “When did Xan get here?”
“A few minutes ago. She came to tell you those weird things were out and about again but she figured since you were talking to Ming you already knew.”
“Yes. I do. Where is she now?”
“In the dining room. Probably trying to hump Gojyo's leg or something else equaling sexual harassment.”
“I'm not certain it's possible to sexually harass the willing,” Rei said.
“Do we need to start securing the inn?” Anya asked.
“Not right this second but I suppose the sooner we start the better. Everything needs to be as tight as we can get it by sundown just in case . . .”
“Ah, why do you need to start securing the inn?” Hakkai asked, coming into the kitchen. “I'm sorry. I overheard you and Anya talking. Will the youkai be here tonight then?”
“They aren't youkai like you've ever dealt with them I'm guessing.”
“How so?”
“They're . . . an oddly modified version of jiang shi. Hard to kill, easy to confuse though,” Rei said, running a hand across her forehead. “I probably need to make sure that Shun and the babies get home okay before dark too.”
“Damn it, Rei, you aren't responsible for everyone on the planet,” Shun said, leaning on the doorframe.
“Shun, you should be in bed. You just gave birth yesterday,” Rei said.
“I'm a mother, there's no such thing as resting with two babies, a five and six year old. Who does the dragon belong to, by the way?”
Hakkai raised his hand sheepishly. “I'm afraid he's more or less mine. He chooses to stay with me at any rate.”
“Well, he's far better mannered than my children,” Shun said.
“Did someone say dragon?” Xan said, poking her head into the room.
“Don't get any ideas, Xan, he's still a baby,” Rei said.
“Oh for the love of the gods!” Anya said. “Rei, stop fussing. Shun, go back to bed. Xan, you're not getting Hakuryuu for breeding purposes yet. And everybody get out of my damn kitchen!”
