Authors note: I have had this story in my mind for some time now. This is my first Saiyuki fic, so I only plead that you’ll review at the end of this and tell me your comments/criticism/or whatever else you might have in mind to make this story better. But for now, enjoy and hope you enjoy your stay! Book I: Monk Chapter 1 “Messing With the Wrong one”
Early in the morning and already hard liquor is being poured in one glass after another. The smell in the bar smelt sweet and piercing to one who might be single, or going through a rough relationship with the aroma of liquors, cigars, and cigarettes. Men, clustered at tables playing a good game of poker and money scatter in the center of those tables, women danced exotically as men hollered and whistles from their sexual appeals aroused them by the mysterious women with no name. In a game of poker you can always tell who has a half-way decent card in their hand; by either their eyes shifting from one player to another or a cocky grin with a cigar to one side of their mouth and they happen to be the first to speak…
“Your move Blondie.” A large, bald man that couldn’t weight any less than three-hundred pounds, wearing a dirty yellowish-brown T-shirt that had to be stained with sweat for a ring of it was formed around his neck exclaimed. His eyes read everything. If he won with the cards that he has spread out in his hands he’d quickly gather the money and take the next train-out; but, if he loses then well, it will be a showdown until the last man is sitting at their table.
Staring at his deck, the man that happens to be considered Blondie at the table, leaned back and brought his eyes on the fat man. He watched the man and reached across the table and grabbed his drink. The piercing taste of Vodka kissed his lips and made it’s way down his throat in a slowly, and thickly way. The large man frowned. His ambition seemed to be getting the best of him, for sweat began to cross down his forehead and his heart pounded hard against his chest with a fast, steady beat. “If you don’t speak now you coward, then forfeit the game.” He sneered.
The blonde man leaned forward, “Show me watch-ya’ got, then we might be able to see who’s the coward then.” His voice in a mono-tone and his facial expression need not to change while dealing with the overly-weight man.
With that note lingering in the air, the man gritted his teeth and placed his cards down on the table. A smirk spread across his face, thinking his hand, the deck he lied down, was unbeatable; with a ace and four kings, or known as four of a kind. His green eyes shot up with what almost could have been identified as a twinkle maybe in his eye? As if the game was already his to be owned.
Grabbing a hold of a cigar that was cocked in the bald mans mouth he pressed it in the ash tray. The large man’s mouth dropped open, with no words coming out. “For one thing if you think trying to kill me when I win is going to work, it’s not.” The man slowly picked his jaw up, “For one, your getting on my nerves. For two you smell like a dirty wet bore that never took a bath in months…”
“Why you little…”
And three… you’ve got the worst poker face I have ever seen. And last but not least, for a demon, your very ugly in human form.”
“Who do you think you are? Some type of god of some sort?” The man gritted as his sweat dripped down his cheek bone and landed on his shoulder mixing in with other stains.
The blonde, skinny man smirked as he popped a cigarette in his mouth and flicked a lighter twice before lighting it. Placing it at the bud he closed the lid of his lighter and smirked, “Your worst nightmare.” His grin was wicked as his eyes squinted with an almost egotistic look, around in that way.
“Show your cards you maggot.” The man spat out as spit flew on the able making those who ’pass’ sick to their stomachs. They all sat straight up in their chair’s as now their eyes came upon the blonde man. No worry pressed his face. He took his cigarette out of his mouth and blew a smoke ring at the man in front of him. For he act as though he wasn’t scared, hell, why should he be? Considering he was considered the best gun-slinger known to mankind, but no one knew that.
“You have some real guts.” He exclaimed, as he straightened his posture in his chair and sighed, throwing his cards down on the table. There lied four Aces and a King. Closing his eyes and placing the cigarette back into his mouth he nod, “Now if you’ll excuse me, I do believe I won this round I will be taking off with this money and your goods.” His long slender fingers reached out for the money as a knife came tumbling down in the center. Missing his middle finger by a few centimeters.
Looking up at the bald man a wicked grin was upon his face, “You think your going to get away with cheating you damn bastard?”
Leaning back and placing his cigarette in the ash tray without being able to finish it he arched an eyebrow, “Now you’ve made me not be able to finish my cigarette.” His voice was in a mono-tone state as he snarled his lip up, “No one calls me a bastard either.” He slowly risen up from his chair, “And I’ll be damned if I’ll let the likings of a demon beat me in a game of poker!” His eyes flashed with blazing mixed colors for his chair fallen backwards and he pulled out his gun.
The bar drew silent as they all watched. Men around who had cigarettes in their mouths had fallen out. The glass of some type of liquid fallen on the floor making a shattering sound. The bar tender kept his one hand on the bottom of the glass while the other cleaned the rim of it. A smirk was placed on his face. This wasn’t the first fight in the bar, and surely it wasn’t going to be the last. But every fight that has been carried on, seemed to get more interesting as each has came.
“You think you scare me?” His body began to shift into another form, bubbling as the smell of rotten meat filled the air. People around began to jump out of their seats either from the disgusting stench or because of the gruesome action that was being taken place.
A tail sprouted from behind in a dagger shape form, and his hands began to grow claws that began to crack as his fingers began to grow larger. His legs grew bigger than what they where and what looked like fur began to sprout in all directions. His eyes turned a harsh yellow color as his facial expression began to disappear. The sound of his heart left. Wings sprouted from his back in black. He was feeding off of the dead human he apposed to be. Blood began to sling everywhere and the creatures veins began to move, showing the bumping of blood or supposedly blood.
“Sanzo!” A young, loud boy yelled out as he quickly ran up beside the blonde man and covered his face in protection of that awful stench left behind, “Ew, what is that awful smell?” He asked as looked at the creature that roared as it’s transformation wasn’t completely over, for it still was working on it’s face.
Sanzo kept his eyes on the creature as he growled, “Goku what are you doing here? I thought I told you and the others to stay behind?” His words deep and rash. His feelings seemed numbed as if he didn’t have a heart. But a monk, a monk always had to be cold for the only thing they do is kill. Kill demons which possesses something that should be destroyed.
“About that…” Goku began as he uncovered his face, showing his white teeth. “I actually spent all of Gojyo’s money and well, now he wants to kill me. I couldn’t help myself Sanzo! I was starving!” Goku exclaimed as he rubbed the back of his head as the wicked tail came crashing down beside him making him jump in the air before getting smashed.
“Is that all you think about?” Sanzo exclaimed gritting his teeth as he pressed the trigger of his gun making a clean shot in the creatures side. A shrilling cry escaped it’s mouth but only more furry hungered over it. “Food?”
“Well a growing man like myself always has to have a good meal.” Goku exclaimed as his weapon appeared out of no-where and twirled the weapon in his hand. “But since, I’m here…” He exclaimed as he charged after the demon and ending up hitting the creatures in the head leaving it in daze. “lets get rid of this damn thing!” Goku grunted.
Sanzo shook his head, while gritting his teeth in aggravation. I don’t know how I put up with these nincompoops. Sanzo thought while watching has his monkey King friend struck after the demon.
“Sanzo?! Aren’t you going to help?!” Goku asked as his feet dropped on the ground with a loud thud. He panted as he looked over at Sanzo, who had that same frown on his face. There seemed to never be a smile on the monks face. Why? The answer is unknown. Gritting his teeth, Goku struck again, what is up with Sanzo?! It’s not like him to sit here and watch! Goku thought as a shrilling cry of pain screamed out of the demon’s mouth as it’s tail whipped around and missed Sanzo by the hair falling down leaving the ground shake beneath them.
“Hey sorry I’m late… Gojyo had to explain to the cashier that our little monkey friend here has a very large appetite and that he’ll make it up to her.” Hakkai said as his green eyes glanced behind Sanzo and Goku and looked at the creature lying there. “Um, Sanzo, was there something that I missed?” He directed over back at his friend.
Sanzo gritted his teeth, “No lets go.” With that, he slowly passed by Hakkai and didn’t even stop to give him eye contact. Making the demon-spirit within wonder. But there was no place in asking any questions. When Sanzo means business, he means business. There was no way around that. But, normally he was more spoken than what he was at the time.
“Sanzo! Wait up!” Hakkai called after his friend while quickly following behind. Catching wind of the smell of death and rotten meat, Hakkai curled his nose up and pushed his thin glasses on his nose and chased after his fellow comrade.
With a sigh as he walked in the wind while fidgeting for a lighter in his pocket to light his cigarette he arched an eye brow as his auburn eyes danced upon his friend. “What is it now Hakkai?”
With a hesitantly smile and rubbing the back of his neck, not even worrying about Goku who happens to try to catch up to the two, exclaimed, “Well it’s just that you haven’t been acting yourself lately. Your more… iterative.”
“Feh. Point is?” Sanzo asked with a smirk as he finally caught hold of his lighter and lit the cigarette and took in a deep puff.
Hakkai sighed, “Sanzo I think maybe you need a women in your life as what Gojyo says.” His words lingered desperately in the air. Even the air became dry and still from what Hakkai exclaimed. The tree’s that surrounded them made no noise and the horses next to them lifted their heads while stop chewing on some cracked corn. Taking a gulp, even to himself he wasn’t sure if what he just said was such a good idea. Knowing how the monk seems to find everything annoying.
Taking the cigarette out of his mouth his eyes shot over at his friend, “Ever thought that I don’t need a women in my life?” His words stung in the air dryly, “Ever thought that you three lug heads are enough for me to handle let alone a women?”
“Well it’s only a recommendation that’s all.” Hakkai gave a hesitant laughter, “Plus, I didn’t say it has to be now now did I Sanzo? Plus, I just think it might be healthy for you that’s all.”
“What about you Hakkai?” Sanzo looked over with a smirk, knowing he touched a nerve on his friends feelings. “Are you telling me that you’ll be happy finding another women?” Hakkai slightly opened his mouth as he closed it. He knew not to speak back, for if he did, unkindly words would be thrown at his friend and that was something he wasn’t going to take the chance of. “That’s what I thought.” The monk muttered as he walked up beside a brown horse and patted it. “I hate horses.” He growled as he took his leg and flung it around the horse. Giving a slight bit of a prance a weeing sound escaped the horses mouth as it snorted.
Goku followed up behind quickly stopped to catch his breath, “What’s the big idea of leaving me behind like that?! You know how tough that demon was?” Goku exclaimed as his golden eyes shot up at Sanzo and Hakkai as neither one of them could look at each other. “Did I miss something?” He asked placing his hands behind his head arching a eyebrow in the process.
“No. Nothing important that is.” Hakkai spoken up first with a light sigh following after. His dark hair glistered in the wind, as the trees around finally began to make their crisps sounds. Birds flew high as their voices sung sweetly. Spring. It was finally spring and nothing could be any better than the cool breeze with a halfway decent weather structure.
“Good.” Goku sighed as his eyes came upon Sanzo who still was propped on the horses back, “I thought you didn’t like horses?” He snorted as he walked over to the brown horse and patted the back end of it.
Sanzo snarled, “I don’t.”
“What’s the point of being on one then Sanzo? You think your going to go somewhere?”
Sanzo quickly looked over at the small boy. His eyes spoken everything. Cold, none carrying and lifeless. He seemed as though he had no spirit, no life, not carrying about anyone, or even anything. He had his mind made up. He wasn’t going to let anything stand in his path of finding this scroll. “The demon’s we fight only get tougher, I don’t think that this is the matter of you all following me anymore. I believe if you do that, you’ll just end up killing yourself at the end.” His words pierced Goku’s and Hakkai’s tongue. “I think you all should go back home, it’s just going to get rougher.”
Goku growled as his forehead began to twitch violently listening to his friends gesture, “Are you stupid Sanzo?! Do you honestly think you can face all those demons by yourself?” Goku asked waiting for an answer as Sanzo clasped a hold of the rope that lead the horse.
“I doubt it if I personally will be able to go and defeat all of these demons by myself-”
“Then you do need us you foolish man!” Goku yelled as his stick looking weapon appeared.
Sanzo arched an eyebrow, “Are you willing to fight me Goku?” His words direct and a smirk formed on his face. He was ready for this, ready to teach the monkey a lesson. One in which might cost him his life.
Goku took a gulp and nodded, “I’m ready Sanzo!” He cried out as tears began to pierce his eyes, not wanting to battle his friend but afraid that he’s going to have too.
