FESTIVAL OF LIGHTS
A Samurai Deeper Kyo Challenge Fanfic

Written By Miyu, Vampire Princess

CHALLENGE THEME: I only want what I cannot have.

AUTHOR'S NOTES:
I'm writing for characters I'm not sure I have a grasp of or not. I guess the fans will decide. Wish me luck. I need it for this one. >.< Happening after a stretch of the manga presented in volume 15, Benitora, Mahiru and Sasuke stop to rest in a local village. To their surprise, the villagers are celebrating a festival. This part told from Benitora's point of view. Non-lemon. A Standard disclaimer follows the story.

~BENITORA'S POV~

I've never felt so lonely in my life.

Though, I'm not really alone. Mahiru and the kid are with me. Add in the couple hundred people now crowding the streets and I guess "alone" doesn't count.

The sunset was beautiful, accented by the shouts and cries of joy as a local festival went underway. Amazing how a little locale can be changed in so short a time. When we arrived this morning, there was never a clue as to the party currently taking place.

I want to join in the merriment, but I can't bring myself to do it.

Too much on my mind I guess.

The Mibu are a troublesome bunch. The kid's injuries caused us to stop here for some rest. He insisted he didn't need it. Maybe not. But I was tired, and I was sure Mahiru could use a break too. We'd practically held the brat between us the entire walk. He may be able to fight those bastards in a daze, but we can't.

That guy really did a number on him.

I wonder if he knows just how worried I was about him.

I wonder if the others are faring better than us.

I wonder if Yuya's okay.

Despite the hardship and danger that lies ahead, my thoughts always drift back to her. Yuya. Time's ticking away with that worm thingy inside of her. Kyo better know what he's doing. If we catch up with him and she's dead, with his original body or not, I swear I'll kill him.

Overreacting as usual, but I can't help it. I finally meet a woman feisty enough and pretty enough, and SHE ends up head over heels for someone else. Even is she has no clue she's fallen so hard. The way she looks at him, watches over him. And that fire in her words when she yells, the look of determination on her face when her mind is set on something. I want her to look at me that way. Only me. So much about her draws me in: her smile, her laugh, her pout, her loyalty, her determination and willingness to help others.

And does HE give a damn? I hate to admit it, but he may very well care about her, too. With him it's difficult to tell. So much of him is hidden in shadow. The demon is clearly in control. Yet he's shown a slightly softer side lately. Just slightly. A little, teeny bit.

I wouldn't stand a chance against him in a fight. I'd be flat out knocked on my ass and probably killed. Not the way I want to end my life, really. And strangely enough, I feel a camaraderie with him. We've fought together. Drank together. Whether he returns the notion, I do consider him a friend. I believe in him.

Just as I believe he'll keep her safe.

My heart feels like it's going to break.

Why do we always want what we cannot have?

"Hidetada-sama?"

I feel something move within me as I hear my name. I only nod as I feel a hand on my shoulder, the warmth of another body as it sits next to me. "Are you enjoying yourself, Mahiru?"

"I would ask you the same."

I dare a glance upward, and I'm clearly stunned by the person next to me. Her usual attire gone, Mahiru was dressed in a traditional kimono, probably borrowed from the nice old couple giving us shelter. The bright yellow and white of her obi is in stark contrast to the deep blue of the kimono. The small floral pattern woven throughout is beautifully crafted. Her hair is half up, half down, with greens and flowers woven there too. Her smile is like a light and the look in her eyes speaks of mischief.

"You should join the party, young master."

I manage a smirk in her direction, my eyes still taken with her beauty. "We came here to rest."

"Why not relax by having a little fun? Many dangers lie ahead. Perhaps this will be the last time."

"Perhaps."

She stands, grasping one of my hands in hers. "Throw your troubles to the wind for one night. This is a celebration!"

I don't argue as she hauls me to my feet with one hand, a testament to her training as a warrior. Clutching the remains of my drink in the other hand, I join the party. It takes only a few moments to move with the crowd, to cheer as more fireworks are set off, lighting up the sky. There is much dancing and celebration.

I loose sight of Mahiru, only to catch her dancing with a group of women near a bonfire. It's side of her I have never seen. A bright, warm smile. Her lithe body moving to the drum. And is that laughter? I close my eyes, memorizing the sound. It's almost familiar. As if I've heard it before.

Suddenly, my heart seems much lighter.

Could it be that I've overlooked something?

Could it be that my brain's been deluding my heart?

'Throw your troubles to the wind for one night.'

I suppose there's only one way to find out.
