Part Six - Troubled Cords
The clock had only changed a fraction from the last time she looked at it. Ten minutes after twelve. Late. He was late.
"Maria, will you please stop pacing?"
"He's late!"
"If he said he'll be here, he'll be here."
"Daddy's home?"
Maria sighed, eyeing the clock one last time. Then she kneeled, kissing her young son on the top of his head. His face scrunched up as she ruffled his hair.
"Yes, Yuhi, daddy's coming."
"I just combed his hair," her mother stated with a sigh.
"I wonder where he is," she said, glancing at her watch for the tenth time in as many minutes. "It's not like him to be late." Looking out the window -- again for the tenth time in ten minutes -- she sighed. "Many people are already here...."
"Perhaps he's caught in traffic," her mother responded, aiding her grandson with a tiny suit jacket. The boy fidgeted and whined in complaint, but found solace in his toys moments later.
"Father, have you seen Yuki?"
"Yuki?"
"Yes?"
"Didn't I tell you," he said as he straightened his tie. "He won't be coming."
"Did he call?"
"No."
"Then how...?" The smirk on his face was all she needed to know the truth. Still, she asked, "What do you MEAN, he won't be coming?"
He turned away from her and began walking to the doorway. "We'll talk after the service."
"No, we'll talk now!"
"Maria, dear...."
"Don't 'Maria, dear' me, mother." She pushed past the older woman, handing her son to her in the process, and charged towards the doorway.
"You said he could come."
"I did."
"Then why are you--?"
"I never said he'd be welcome."
"My husband wants to pay his respects to this family and YOU want to deny him? Yukifumi is a member of this family and deserves to grieve with us!"
Her father turned quickly, his stare enough to turn water to ice. Beyond him was a growing congregation of people -- friends and family gathered to say good-bye. He took only one step forward. Maria was too upset to be afraid, but something inside of her knew better than to continue the argument. She glared defiantly at her father as he replied calmly:
"We will talk AFTER the service."
Maria turned on her heel and stalked back inside. She wanted to cry, to scream, to tear her hair out. So the truth was finally out. Her husband wasn't late. No, he was probably at the gate trying to get in at that very moment!
But he wasn't welcome.
Every evil name and bad word she had ever heard or learned ran through her mind. Each and every one associated with her father. She silently cursed him as she retrieved her son from her mother.
Silently, she cursed herself for being so naive.
"Go see granpa?" Yukihiko asked.
"Yes, baby, we're going to see 'granpa'."
"Is he feeling better?"
The tears that stung her eyes started to fall as she held her son close. He hugged her tightly, resting his head on her shoulder. She moved past her mother, once again heading for the door.
The older woman frowned, her own eyes tearing as she passed. "Maria?"
"I just want to get this over with so we can go home," she muttered as she stepped outside.
Rain started to fall as the service began. Despite the sorrowing weather, Maria kept a brave face during the eulogy for her grandfather. Her son seemed confused, but didn't speak as his great-grandfather's coffin was lowered into the ground. Instead, Yukihiko cried with the rest of the crowd.
Occasionally she glanced at her mother. This was a loss she had taken well until now. The woman had to lean on her husband, hands covering her face as she cried her pain. She truly felt for her mother, a feeling Maria had never realized before.
Then she'd glimpse her father, and she had to turn away.
Until the crowd gasped, and her mother fell to her knees.
"Mother!"
"Help her up!"
As the proceedings ended, the sky grew darker and the rain fell harder. Maria sat at her mother's bedside. It was the older woman's nerves that made her weak, the doctor had said. All she needed was rest. Seeing as her mother was taken care of, Maria left in search of her father.
They had some unfinished business after all.
But it was a security guard that stopped her in the hallway.
"Miss, I have a message."
"It can wait."
"It's...from your husband."
"Yuki?"
"He was here, this afternoon...."
Running from the house, she trudged through the pouring rain and headed for the main gate. It was already locked tight and refused to budge despite her insistent shaking. Not giving up, she walked along the perimeter, calling out with all her heart. The guard said he was still outside. So where was he hiding? Would she even see him?
With a heart wrenching scream, she called for him.
"Yuki!"
Like magic he was there. A dark shadow in the light of a lamppost. In front of her. Drenched from head to toe, he clasped the fence as she ran to him, her own hands trying to grasp his through the entwined metal.
"Maria--!"
"Are you all right?" she asked, tears falling and mixing with the rain. "Are you okay? They didn't hurt you--?"
"I'm fine. I'm okay," he answered, the hint of a smile tugging at his lips. "I'm just happy to see you're okay."
Maria shook her head vehemently. "I am NOT all right. I'm a prisoner here! My father is such a...such a...."
"Jerk?"
"YES! He's such a jerk! First he didn't want me to leave the house. And now...now he won't let me see you. He won't even let you in the gate despite my asking...no BEGGING!"
"Love, it's all right. I'm here now. I'm here. We can leave."
She shook her head again, with less enthusiasm this time, "I can't. Mother collapsed during the service and...." She leaned her forehead against the fence. "I'm scared Yuki. Scared for Yukihiko. If I leave, he might try something. I don't want him involved in this. He's just a child."
"He won't hurt him," Yuki replied. "Or you."
"He already HAS hurt me," she said, sobbing. She clutched at the fence, falling to her knees. "I can't take this any more. I don't understand why...."
"It's my fault."
"No...."
"Yes, it is."
"No...no...."
"He hates me for taking you away."
"I made the decision to leave." She looked at her husband pleadingly.
"He should hate me."
He barely caressed her cheek, fingertips stretching through an opening. His smile was sad as tears of his own began to fall. "He wouldn't do that. You're his daughter. He loves you."
"And he's only looking out for me." She let out a very unlady-like laugh. You're starting to sound like my mother." She eyed him curiously. "Wait...you have a plan, don't you?"
"Sort of."
"Sort of?"
The smile behind the young man's eyes spoke of something forbidden. Dangerous. She hadn't seen that look since...since Yukihiko was conceived. If she wasn't confused, and soaked to the bone, she would have blushed.
"I love you, Maria."
"I love you, too."
Her agony was matched by the eagerness of his kiss. She didn't even mind the press of cold metal against her nose as their lips caressed. She looked at him, misty eyed, as the kiss ended. Love flooded her chest as he smiled at her.
"I'll be back."
Then he turned and ran.
"Wait!" She stood, still clutching at the fence where his hands had been. "Yuki!"
But he was gone.
"Come back safely," she called after him, into the darkness. "Come back
for me! For us!"
'Come back and steal me away again. I need you now more than ever.'
