Part Seven - A Calvary Chorus

"Sir, I'm sorry but you can't--!"

"I can and will."

SMACK!

"Stop!"

POW!

"But you can't--!"

CRASH!

"OWIE!"

"Careful, Atsuro. Leave the hittin' to Sakuya and Towa."

"Then what should I do?"

"Just be cool.... Maybe kick them if you got too. It's worked for me, so far."

"I always did like football."

Yukifumi Toudo shook his head as he and the other members of the band Lucifer finally stood in the main courtyard of the manor. As a group they stormed the front gate and overwhelmed the guards. Only a few were kind enough to back off. The rest were knocked cold by one of the band members.

Sakuya shook an injured hand and looked at his friend. "Are you sure about this?"

"I told you how I went back for Maria before, right?"

"Yeah...."

"I plan to do it again," he said with a smile. "You sure YOU want to do this?"

"Of course," Santa chirped.

"Go get her, Yuki!" Towa exclaimed.

"We'll take care of these guys." Atsuro nodded confidently.

Sakuya returned his friend's smile. "It's overkill, but we're here to back you up. We'll be here if you need us."

A unified "Yeah!" graced his ears and he chuckled. "Thanks guys." He took several strides towards the door before turning to give his friends a thumb's up signal. Their applause and cheers boosted his confidence, but only a little.

The first time he barged through those doors, he was met by a room filled with martial arts students. Some of them were quite skilled, others were seriously lacking. But skilled or not, he charged through. Even when they did manage to hold him back physically, mentally, spiritually he kept pushing forward to reach his love.

And she came.

His feelings this time around were no different. But the situation itself was. No doubt the "enemy" would be prepared. How many guards were left? How many would he have to face to get to her? To them! More than one person was involved now. Would he be able to get them both back safely?

"Yuki?"

"Hmm?"

Sakuya tried not to laugh at his friend. "Open the door."

Yuki gave his friends one final look, then moved forward. Hands shook slightly as he pushed on the door. It opened with a daunting growl. Light flooded from within, framing the guitarist in an eerie halo. He expected to be met with more resistance, and was slightly disappointed when he was not.

The room was surprisingly empty.

Swallowing his fear, he trudged ahead. He didn't hear the door close behind him. The beat of his heart filled his ears. The rush of blood made him deaf to his own footsteps. He called to her as he ran through the halls. His screams for his wife echoed through the halls.

"Maria!"

"There he is!"

"Over there!"

"Stop him!"

Guards! And fighters! Well, they'd raised enough of a rukas. And with nerves flying high and adrenaline burning his veins, he was ready.

Blood once again rushed to his ears, and fists began to fly. This was more like it. This was what he had been hoping for. But they were too many, and he was quickly overwhelmed.

"Get off of me!"

"What is it with you and charging into my home?"

Yuki stopped struggling, his head snapping upward. Close, so close, he thought as he made eye contact with Maria's father. He was dressed in a practice gi, much like the one he'd worn before. Arms crossed, he looked upset. But the smile on his face belied his anger.

"I'm here for my wife and son," Yuki said. "I'd appreciate it if you'd let me see them."

"Or what? You're friends will charge in and help?"

"My friends?"

"The fools who came in with you. The ones I'm having escorted from the premises as we speak."

A frown twisted Yuki's calm features. "They're here for support. Nothing more."

"I think you should rejoin them.... Outside."

The guitarist was pushed forward, but fought back. "I'm not leaving without Maria and Yukihiko."

The older man just shook his head. He waved a hand in the young man's direction and turned to leave. "Take him outside!"

"No! Daddy, STOP!"

"Maria, stay out of this."

She was suddenly there, and Yuki was filled with relief. She was all right. And Yukihiko was safe in her arms. The little boy's smile was enough to warm him to the soul.

"I will not." Maria's harsh voice brought him back into reality.
"Release him at once."

Yuki's guards didn't hesitate, releasing their hold on him immediately. His body slouched, slowly picking itself back up. Then she was there and he wanted nothing more than to hold her, and their little boy.

"Daddy!" Yukihiko exclaimed as Yuki held him for the first time in months.

"Maria, go back upstairs and tend to your mother."

"No." She ran to her husband, who enfolded her in a loving embrace.

"This defiance will not be tolerated--!"

"Why won't you believe me when I tell you I'm happy?"

"You asked for my help." He pointed an accusatory finger at his son-in-law. "Leaving you all alone.... He wasn't there for you and I won't stand it"

"What I asked for was your understanding! I don't know what mom told you, but I never had any intention of leaving my husband."

Rage exploded as Maria's father refused to hear anything else. "Out gallivanting while you stay at home? What kind of relationship is that?! Your mother and I can take care of you, and Yukihiko...."

Yuki hugged Maria tighter as she shook her head. "I love you. I love Mom. You've both done a lot for me over the years, and I can never pay you back. But I love Yuki. I love being IN love with him. Yukihiko is proof! Why can't you let go?

"Let...go? Nonsense...."

It was Yuki that spoke next. "We're leaving here tonight. As a family."

Maria added, "I don't care what you say."

"Don't tempt me, Maria...."

"Don't threaten ME, father." She glared daggers at the man. He was visibly shaken but recovered quickly. However, his daughter didn't back down. She stood up to him, moving so that she was close, but not too. "I have a husband to take care of. A son who needs us both! I will not let you treat me like a four year old! I can make my own decisions! I don't need your help!"

Anger erupted in a calm growl. "What did you just say?"

"You heard her." There was a moment of pause until the voice continued, "It's time to let go."

Yukifumi's heart stopped the moment Maria's mother came into view. Rumors of her illness had not been exaggerated, even if she looked as regal as always. Her pale face showed signs of age never seen before, and her posture was quick to falter.

Her husband immediately tried to placate her. He stepped forward, making sure he was at her side with one hand held in his for support as she walked further into the room. "Sena...dear...."

"Don't you 'dear' me." She shook her head defiantly, though her hold on his hand was firm. "I can't take this anymore! This nonsense is going to stop. Now."

"Nonsense?" It seemed to be the question on everyone's mind, but it was Maria that posed the question. "Mother...?"

"Hush, child. I've watched you be miserable for far too long."

"But I'm not--!"

The woman turned and a hushed awe filled the room. "You are...because you're here.... And your husband is not."

Sena glared up at her husband, whose angry brick wall was crumbling with each second she was near. "She's a grown woman who has made her choice in life. I may not agree -- we may not agree -- but it's her life. She has to make her own choices."

She squeezed her lover's hand, the hard-set wrinkles around her eyes softening slightly. "And look at her. She's amazingly bold, very determined...just how we raised her. She's a wonderful mother." Her eyes focused on Yuki. "And she's managed to find a man better than her father."

"Sena!"

"Admit it! That's why you're being such a hard ass!"

The older man's mouth opened and closed several times before he could put his thoughts into words. "I am NOT--!"

"At least she gets it honestly."

Her father frowned, pouting like a child. "Whatever are you referring to?!"

"Mako, dear, when was the last time you stormed a fortress for me?"

Her husband remained silent, stunned by the affrontment of his own wife. However, the wall had long since collapsed. He sighed shaking his head. "Your father was a little more...understanding."

"Was he now?"

Tired eyes glanced across the room. Seeing his daughter with that man...it made his heart ache. Not because he was a bad man, but because he wasn't...well...him. Not her father. Maybe he did have a problem with his daughter growing up after all. Or was it that it just wasn't the life he wanted for her? The life he'd imagined for his little princess....

But she was happy. Seeing her in his arms, both of them holding their son, it was obvious. Her defiance only brought the point home, hammering the fact into a mind that still clutched onto an image of a young girl that always wanted to hold his hand, sit in his lap, have stories read to her before she went to sleep.

"Dear?"

"You're right, Sena. Absolutely right.... About Maria having to make her own choices, that is." He hugged his wife to him, kissing her on the forehead. "Apparently we all have some growing up left to do."

"Speak for yourself," Sena replied.

"Daddy, does this mean...?"

"This means that we all need to sit down and talk. In private. But for now...go home. Be with your family. Just don't forget about us."

"I would never forget about you," Maria replied, tears stinging her eyes. "I love you."

"And we love you," Sena said, pulling away from her husband and opening her arms. Maria did not hesitate, releasing her own husband to run to her mother.

Yuki stepped forward, but only after Mako stepped away from his wife. He blinked as he was offered a hand to shake. Hesitantly, he accepted, his son laughing gleefully in his arm.

"I don't know why I don't like what you do, but it's really not place to judge. You love Maria, I see that...now...and I'm sorry...for the way you've been treated. Hopefully from here on out, we'll have a better understanding of each other."

"Thank you," was all Yuki could say.

"Now, I need you to tell me something."

"What's that, sir?"

He leaned in as close as possible, eyes darting nervously back and forth. In a whisper he said, "What are the chances that we could get a private performance from Lucifer?"

"Dad!" "Dear!"

"What? He's our son-in-law! That has to come with a few perks, right?" He straightened himself out and continued, "And they're all here, so.... Why not?"

"I agree," Yuki said with a smile, his son laughing and clapping in his grasp. "Why not?"
