Part Nine - Life in Harmony

"What do you mean, no?"

"You're an intelligent woman. I'm sure I don't have to explain what 'no' means."

"That's not what I.... I thought we had an agreement?"

"We did."

"Then why--?"

"Then...then I heard him play that racket he calls music...."

"Dad! How dare you?!"

"How dare I? How dare _I_? You listen to me young lady, I will not tolerate such behavior."

"What behavior?"

"You will stay with us until we can be rid of that...that...."

"That, as you so tactfully put it, is my husband!"

"Not any more."

"Says who?!"

"Says me. And your mother."

Maria Toudou turned to look at her mother. With pleading eyes she silently begged for help. Surely her father was just in a bad mood. He didn't really hate Lucifer's music. He'd even clapped when they were finished playing! The man couldn't have been feigning nice.

Could he?

The older woman just shook her head. "Don't ask me. It's your nightmare, Maria."

Gasping, Maria's eyes snapped open. A dream, she told herself. It was just a dream. Heart pounding in her chest, she tried to settle back into the soft sheets. With each measured breath she felt herself relaxing.

Her father had enjoyed the performance. He was leery at first, and perhaps unsure of the lyrics. But he recognized their talent, including Yuki's. He'd played that guitar like a pro, strumming the strings as if working magic!

And speaking of magic...he'd played her body as well as he played that guitar. She was sore in all the right places, but still yearning for more of his touch. The light caress of soft fingertips against her bare skin. The press of his lips against hers. She could imagine it as if he were playing her right now.

Smiling like a fool, practically purring like a satisfied kitten, the rolled onto her side to snuggle up to the object of her affection. Her arm lifted, expecting to come down around his waist. She expected her fingertips to come into contact with the smooth expanse of his back.

But her loving arm was met only by cool air and emptiness.

Her lungs forgot how to operate. Breath left her. Her heart stopped. But it only lasted a second. Then she rose from bed, staring down at the spot her husband had vacated.

'But he doesn't have to work today. Was he called in? Did I miss the phone? Did I miss him leave?'

Swiftly, she tossed the covers back and made her way into the hall. She couldn't shake this feeling of dread. He was gone. Was she having another dream?

The first room she checked was Yukihiko's. Her heart would feel more settled if she knew her son was safe. The feeling of dread returned as she walked through the doorway. Her feet carried her to the bed. The sheets looked undisturbed, but the tuft of dark hair was missing.

So was her son.

'Oh gods. Oh gods. Oh gods. Oh gods. Oh gods.'

Racing into the hall, she slumped against the wall. That's when she caught it. The slightest of sounds, and briefest of smells.

'A thief? It couldn't be...."

As she moved down the hall, she was surprised to hear sounds coming from the kitchen. Surprised to hear a male voice mutter incomprehensible curses. Surprised by the aroma of cooked meat wafting through the air.

And surprised to see her husband wearing an apron and standing over a stove while her son played in his high chair.

Yukihiko was the first to notice the intruder. He stopped in mid clap, toy blocks held in his tiny hands. He let out a little sigh, and then set the blocks down. He looked over at his dad, then back at his mother.

"Uh-oh...."

Yukifumi Toudou nearly dropped a fork into a sizzling frying pan. He scrambled to catch it, the prongs of the fork just scraping the edge as he grabbed it. Maria covered her mouth to hold back a giggle. To call him surprised would have been an understatement. He had been concentrating so hard that he'd become unaware of his surroundings. She'd only seen him do that in the studio. And the look of disappointment that followed yet another clatter made it clear that things were not going right.

The disarrayed look of the kitchen only backed him up.

"Good morning," he said with a half smile. "I didn't think you'd be awake this early."

Maria leaned against the doorway. With arms crossed under her chest, she nodded to the stove. "What are you doing?"

Yuki shrugged. There was a loud sizzle in the frying pan and he stepped back quickly to avoid being sprayed. "Making breakfast," he stated simply as he continued with his work.

"Making momma breakfast," Yukihiko corrected his father.

The guitarist shook his head. "What he said."

"Making momma breakfast, huh?"

Yuki's smile broadened just a little. "That's right. I thought I'd surprise you with breakfast in bed. I did keep you up most of the night...if you recall." He looked at her out of the corner of his eye. His smile widened as he saw the blush on his wife's cheeks. Yep. She recalled. "But I guess I don't have to do that now. Right, Yukihiko?"

The little boy shook his head. "No, daddy. Breakfast is for momma."

"Ah. But she's not in bed," the older man pointed out.

Yukihiko thought about that for a few moments. Eyes blinking, the wheels turned in his little head. Then he lifted his hands, waving them as if to tell Maria to go away.

"Shoo, momma. Breakfast in bed. Shoo!"

Maria laughed aloud, nodding to her son. "All right, I'll go back to bed." From the doorway she blew the little boy a kiss. He caught it happily and placed his little fists to his cheek.

"What about me? Don't I get a kiss," Yuki asked as Maria turned to leave.

"Maybe...after breakfast," she said with a wink.

She sighed as she walked down the hall. The worst was over. They were together again. A family. There were still some things to be discussed, perhaps some changes to be made, but it mattered little. Things always worked out for the best. And she knew now that she could rely on her mother for support. Her father, too.

But Yuki would be the first person she'd call.

Well, maybe the second.

She clutched her hands to her chest as she sat on the edge of the bed. Her heart fluttered at the memory of last night. It beat faster as she thought of all the ways she could pay him back for breakfast. But first thing was first. She promised him a serious conversation, and a serious conversation they would have.

"Momma! Breakfast is ready!"

The little boy came running into the room. Maria picked him up and placed him on the bed beside her. Then she threw back the covers and invited him to crawl underneath with her. The boy smiled happily and took the invitation. They were both snuggled under the covers as Yuki walked through the doorway with a delicious smelling treat.

"Breakfast anyone?"

"It smells wonderful." Maria smiled, sitting up. "What culinary delights has the infamous rocker of Lucifer brought for me today?"

Yuki couldn't help but laugh. "I'm not a chef," he replied honestly. "So I'm very grateful you keep those microwave waffles in the freezer. Plus there's scrambled eggs and bacon."

"And fruit," Yukihiko added.

"And fruit," Yukifumi said, ruffling his son's dark hair. "Very important according to our little chef."

"He just wants the banana," Maria teased, handing the fruit to her son. "Don't you?"

He blushed a light shade of pink and nodded.

Yuki cut the first bite and held it up for his wife to taste. He fed her a few more bites before she took over, feeding him a bite or two on occasion. They ate as a family, simply enjoying the pleasure of being together.

Once the main course was finished, and Yukihiko was taken back to his room to play, Maria decided it was time. "Yuki?"

He sat on the bed next to her, picking up a piece of fruit remaining on the tray. "What is it, love?"

"I'm really sorry about...well...everything. I really am happy being with you. And being a mom. And going to school. And working part time." She smiled up at him as tears stung her eyes. "I love you so much."

"If it makes you happy, it makes me happy," he replied. Carefully he dipped a strawberry in cream and lifted it for her to eat. His eyes narrowed slightly as she took a delicate bite. "And with the year's events coming to a close, the new album coming along nicely, I should be able to spend more time with my family."

"Should?"

"Will," he said, leaning inward he rested his forehead against hers. "I will do everything I can to spend more time at home."

"I'd like that." Swallowing hard, she looked up at him - as best as she could with his close proximity. "But do you know what would make me even happier?"

"What's that?"

"A little girl."

Yuki pulled away, blinking. "Did I hear you right?"

"What did you hear?"

"A little girl."

Maria nodded. "That's right."

Eyes wide he asked, "Are you...?"

"No, no." She shook her head. "But...well...if it's okay with you...I'd like to...I mean...." Her blush encompassed her face down to her chest. She was afraid to look at him, but his eyes were so dark that she couldn't look away. The direct link between them seemed to make her next words all the more intense. "I'd like to try."

There was a pause before Yuki replied, "I think last night was a pretty good start, don't you?"

Her joy could not be more obvious. "You mean it?!"

"I think I'd like a little girl." His smile was bigger than he'd ever admit. "And if nothing else, I know I'm going to love trying to make a baby with you."

"Fiend," she muttered before their lips met in a brief kiss.

"But trying will have to wait until later," Yuki said.

"Why's that?"

"Because once you've finished eating, our son wants to take us to the zoo."

"The zoo?"

"Yes. Followed by a walk through the park and lunch at a noodle cart."

"A three year old couldn't plan that, Yuki."

"True," he said. "But the zoo was his idea."

Maria laughed. "Then I suppose I'm done eating. Just give me a few minutes to shower and I'll be ready."

"Want some company?"

"Nuh-uh." She shook her finger at her husband. "I saw that kitchen." With the same finger, she poked him on the tip of his nose. "YOU can clean up, while I do the same. How's that?"

"Not as much fun." He gave her another quick kiss. "But you have a deal."

As her husband left with the scant remains of breakfast Maria stretched her arms over her head and stifled a yawn. Things really were working out for the best. When was the last time they had done a family outing?

The thought of adding to her family was also very exciting. Yuki would be the perfect father all over again! And she knew Yukihiko would be a good big brother. Of course getting pregnant would be fun as well. She couldn't argue with her husband on that detail.

"Ah...life in harmony," she muttered to herself as she crawled from bed once again and made her way to the door. "It's going to be a good day."
