The Beginning Of The End Of Life As We Know It
Ivy broke off the kiss and said, “Good morning Yoh, honey! It was so nice of you to come and wake me up. Otherwise I think I might have slept the whole day away! Hehehe! I'll be down in awhile. Thanks. I'll see ya then! `Kay?”
Then she slammed (okay, maybe not `slammed', but quickly shut) the door in my face. “Okay…” I walked back downstairs and joined the others for lunch. “Hey guys!” I called cheerfully.
“Hey Yoh!” The boys looked up from their food to greet me as I came down the stairs, but then they soon went back to mercilessly devouring their meals.
Horo swallowed a giant wad of meat as I sat down next to him. “So, Yoh,” He whispered. “Are ya gonna ask her today, dude?”
“Yep. After lunch. If she ever gets down here…” I gazed longingly at the stairs whishing that Ivy would hurry up and get out of bed. “She really likes to stay in bed as much as possible.”
“That's a good thing. She'll make a good wife in that perspective, if you know what I mean! Hehehe…” Jocko added on to our conversation.
I blushed a little, as I glared at Jocko “I wasn't thinking that way at all. You guys have such dirty minds…” I grumbled.
“Well, Yoh, she does seem to know what she's doing around men.” Rio stated from across the table.
I was really glad that none of the girls were present for this discussion.
“I think she'll make a fine wife.” Faust commented.
“I wish you would all stop whispering about my sister when I can hear you perfectly well!! I don't want to hear any more of this conversation!” Ren slammed his third milk jug of the day down on the table. “And you, Yoh! I don't even want you looking at her!! If I even catch you starring at her the wrong way, I will hurt you so badly that Hao feels it!”
“Hehe…he.” I laughed nervously. “I promise I won't.”
“Uhhhhhh!!” A huge sigh was heard descending the stairs. Ivy soon followed after. She didn't look well. Ivy sluggishly dragged her feet across the floor, and then collapsed next to me. “Morning…” she mumbled. I noticed that she was bear foot, and that a huge scar was showing on her calf.
“Ivy, are you alright?” I nudged her worriedly.
“No.” She sighed. “ I can't find my boots! And, men won't leave me alone. Sometimes I just want to swear them off like Beatrice from `Much Ado About Nothing'.”
Ren snorted at his little sister. “Stupid. Beatrice did marry. Remember? She married Benedict, whom she hated up until the end of the play. Saying that you shall be like Beatrice is implying that you'll fall in love with and marry Hao.”
I didn't see Ivy move, but the next second she had a glowing whip encircled around Ren's throat. “Don't you ever even suggest that.” She growled softly, but dangerously.
“S-sorry. Ignore my raving.” Ren gasped.
Ivy let go of the whip, Ren fell to the floor gasping for breath, and I looked anxiously at Ivy. “Ivy, are you alright? You're acting so strangely.”
“I'm just tired. I slept rather fitfully last night.” She yawed as she snuggled up against me and fell asleep in my arms.
Horo slapped me on the back, “Damn, Yoh, you have all the luck with the ladies!!”
“What do you plan to do about Anna?” Faust, thinking logically, asked.
“What about me?” Anna, followed by the rest of the girls, came down the stairs glaring daggers as she spotted Ivy and me.
“Absolutely nothing.” I muttered.
Anna came over to me and glared down at the sleeping Ivy. “What a slut.”
“She's not!” I defended.
Anna looked startled for a moment, but soon recovered her February face: cold, misty, frozen, icy.
When I realized that I had stood up to Anna, I too was shocked.
Anna ignored me as she took to shaking Ivy gently. “Come on, wake up, Ivy. I have food.” Anna grabbed a piece of toast and waved it under Ivy's nose.
Ivy snuggled even closer to me as she pushed away the toast.
“I guess she's not hungry.” I suggested.
“Leave me alone. I'm tired.” Ivy groaned, still asleep.
“Let me give it a try. Yer goin' about it all wrong.” Isabelle appeared out of nowhere. “IVY!!!! WE'RE OUT OF JELLO!!!”
Ivy instantly snapped awake, “What am I supposed to eat if we don't have any Jello!!? I think I'm gonna cry!!” She paused for a moment when she noticed everyone's intent gazes had fallen on her. “What?”
Anna was the first to recover. “Wow. That was easier than I thought. Ivy, eat your lunch. There's jello in the fridge.” Anna rolled her eyes and took a seat on the other side of me.
“Oh. Is that all? Sorry, I'm very out of it today. I think I need to go for a walk. Excuse me.” Ivy stood up and made her way to the door. All the while muttering something under her breath. She spotted her boots by the doorway, but looked utterly confused as to how they managed to get there.
“I'll go with her. She's not acting like herself, and it's got me worried.” I stood up from the table and followed Ivy out the door.
“ASK HER!!!” Horo Horo yelled after me.
“Good luck Yoh!!” Jocko called as well.
Ivy was waiting for me outside leaned up against the side of the house. “What did you want to talk about?” She asked lazily.
I was taken aback. How did she know? “I didn't say that I wanted to talk to you…how did you know?”
“You didn't say anything about talking to me, but you were thinking about it.” She replied matter-of-factly.
“You can read minds?!” I blushed at all the things I had thought about her that she might have overheard.
“No. That's an Anna thing. I could just sense it.” She paused a minute as she pushed herself off of the building and into standing position. “So what was it about?”
“Well…Let's take a walk. Do you want to go to the garden?” I wanted everything to be perfect when I asked, including the background.
“Sure. I haven't been there in forever!” She smiled brightly as she grabbed my hand and pulled me off toward the garden.
When we got there it was just as beautiful as I had remembered it being. “Perfect.” I mumbled.
“What was that?” Ivy wrinkled her nose in confusion. She looked so cute when she did that; like a little lost puppy.
“Nothing.” I smiled at her as I swept her off her feet and carried her to the center of the garden. I set her down on the lip of the fountain, and sat down beside her. She stood up and sat back down so that she was kneeling beside the fountain so that she could reach over the lip and dangle her fingers in the water. She always did that; I guess she was just more comfortable that way.
I mentally made note of how beautiful she was. She was wearing a different type of outfit today. She had on an even shorter cut skirt (if that was possible), the same old pair of black boots, and a bikini style top that was less revealing than the other. The top was white and looked like a polo (sort of), only it had the sleeves cut off, but the collar kept on, and it was cut on a slant so that you could see half of her stomach. She also had a tight choker on. It had a little piece of shiny metal dangling on it. She looked gorgeous.
“Remind me, what did you want to talk about, again?” She looked up at me with an innocent look in her eyes. Begging me to `kiss and tell', so to speak. “Or are you going to keep me in the dark forever?”
I looked down at her, sitting there. I wanted to take her in my arms and kiss her passionately then, but it wasn't time. First I had something to ask. “Well…” I started as I gathered up my courage.
