Prologue
The Nightmares Are Real
The creature---The monstrosity---that now stood before Luna was a grotesque, malformed, spectacle to behold. The decadent stench emanating from this thing was strong and pervading, Luna wanted to faint with just a single whiff.
The demon was repugnant beyond description, it was just the sickest, most vile thing this girl had ever seen. Ever. It was a basically human-shaped monster but it was so rotted and deformed. One of the demon's arms hung limp at it's side, seeming to be dislocated, swinging back and forth as it moved towards this frightened young girl. The other arm, however, wasn't really an arm at all, it appeared to be more like a fused protrusion to substitute for an arm. It was like a partially flesh-covered metal blade, like a scythe. The creature stumbled forward with a precarious and unusual gait, lumbering back and forth as though it couldn't control it's upper body too well. As it lumbered into what little light existed, Luna saw that it had no eyes but instead, train spikes had been plunged through its eye sockets. Even without eyes, it appeared that it could still see Luna because, as she tried to back away, trying to have the fear within her heart subside, it continued to lumber slowly in her direction. She could even see that this homunculus had it's mouth loosely sewn shut, so it could still open it to release moans and groans sounding of torment and anguish but not any further.
Even in the darkest recesses of her most abysmal nightmares, Luna could have never imagined up such a horror so sickening, yet now, this unearthly fiend inched towards her, more real than any horror novel travesty. She couldn't move---she tried with all the will she had left but she just couldn't. Fear and distress had planted her feet to the rotted, gross tiles while that tormented thing crept ever closer. In vain, Luna kept trying to get her legs moving and managed only to attain a bruise as she fell back hard on her butt. She couldn't even yelp at the pain because fear had permeated every sensibility in her.
The monster looming over the fallen girl stood now unsteadily. It opened its mouth as wide as it could to release an unearthly wail and raised its scythe-like protrusion of an arm. Instinctually, the horrified young girl quickly brought her arms up as though she was hoping they could protect her from whatever was about to happen and she also shut her eyes tightly. Opening her mouth so as to scream, Luna found that in addition to her legs, her voice had been paralyzed so with the fear that coursed through her like a jolt of lightning. She had become so frightened that she could do nothing but hope for a quick and painless death, which is a hope that had little prospect of being realized. Luna would die, she realized she was going to die and she couldn't even find the strength to cry or to scream…

“Sis! Wake up! C'mon Luna,” Sam hysterically called out to Luna as he tried to wake her up, “c'mon, wake up!” Luna continued to moan and cry out, tossing and turning, as she proceeded further into her nightmare of torture without death. “Luna! Luna! Come on, wake up!” Finally, after Sam shook her a few more times, Luna's eyes shot open wide and she sat straight up. She was soaked with her sweat, her short auburn hair was disheveled and glued to her face. From behind her bangs dripping sweat, Luna hastily surveyed her moonlit bedroom as though to ensure she was there and nothing else was, her eyes were wide with terror and fear. Finally noticing her brother, she broke down and fell into his embrace. She wrapped her arms tight around him as if she never wanted to let go. And she began crying hysterically on his shoulder.
“I…I was so scared!!” Luna managed to speak between sobs.
“It's alright now. Everything's alright. It was only a nightmare.” Sam held her gently and patted her head. He was hoping that one day her nightmares might stop. They haven't. The little girl he was comforting had been having these nightmares for a few days now. He didn't know what to do.
“No! It's not!” Luna screamed furiously at Sam. She hated to hear him say that every time. All she wanted was the benefit of the doubt that maybe she just might be right. Kids never got the benefit of the doubt. Why would they? They're only children after all, they'd do anything to get attention.
“Luna, this has happened before and--- ”
“No! I-I was really there! That-that `thing', everything! It's real! It tried to kill me! Every time, it keeps trying to kill me!” She was completely hysterical now.
“Please, just calm down,” He continued to hold Luna, “Whatever it was that you saw---whatever was there---it's gone now.”
Luna pulled her head away from Sam and looked at him with horribly sorrowful eyes. “Sam…I don't want to live here anymore. Why do we have to stay?!”
“It's what mom and dad would've wanted us to do. Besides, where else are we going to go?”
“Anywhere! Anywhere but here! Please!”
“…Listen, it's almost six. Why don't I go get some breakfast ready for you and we'll talk about all this later, okay? Now go clean yourself up, alright?”
Apprehensively, Luna nodded her head in a solemn, miserable manner. Sam stood and turned the lights on as he left the room. Luna just sat in her disheveled bed, apathetic and despondent. After a moment, she glanced down at her right arm as a sharp tinge of pain registered in her mind. She felt the horror that had subsided begin to surface once again. Because there, across the back of her hand and forearm was a deep laceration, much like from a knife…
