Sometimes it's simply not enough to be content.

It's one thing to be content and another to be happy, for all that the two often go together. He has felt happiness before, and this monotone cycle of humdrum voices and books under a desklamp is not it. He is content, though, in the sense that he knows he has achieved something worthwhile. It is done.

Kogure walks home in the twilight. The pavement feels strange under his shoes. He still expects the soles to squeak against a polished surface instead of being worn down against tar and concrete. He feels time stretching taut, taking him farther and farther away from Shohoku.

He waits for the break. In the meantime, he fusses and worries and cares, because they're all he has ever known.
