(sequel to High School Never Ends)

"He [Rukawa] always does the most unreasonable things." - Akagi Takenori, Slam Dunk volume 20

Chapter 1: Here Without You

Five weeks. How could five weeks drag on so slowly? Once Sakuragi Hanamichi had returned to the real world after his retreat in the wonderful world of Rukawa, he realized he'd missed a few things. Apparently Mitsui had dumped Kira after a long discussion with the idealistic Love Doctor Rukawa. Since then, Mitsui and Sakuragi had spent much of their free time drowning their respective love-related sorrows together.

Fortunately for everyone involved, Mitsui did not seem to recall drunkenly telling Sakuragi, as the younger man drove him home, that he wished he could be gay so the two of them would only need each other.

Also fortunately, Sakuragi was realistic enough to know it could never ever happen.

Looking up from his desk calendar, which had alerted him to the five-week separation, Sakuragi frowned as he heard what seemed to be a sappy love song coming from Danny's computer. "Oi, what the hell is that?" he asked, giving the American a semi-annoyed look.

"Man, it's the 80s station on Itunes! Ohh just love the 80s music…I've been waiting for a Cure song to come on."

"Well what is that? Pshhht and here I thought you were into hard-core rap…"

"Yeah so you can't tell anyone I'm jamming out to Richard Marx."

At this Sakuragi burst out laughing, gaining an annoyed look from the woman at the next desk. She hated him, he was sure of it. Ignoring her, he rolled his chair over to Danny's desk to listen.

"Cheesy," he stated.

"Man whatever, it's no worse than like…Hitomi, or those anime soundtracks…"

"You'll get no argument from me!" Sakuragi chuckled, starting to listen to the song. He vaguely remembered hearing it in junior high school perhaps, on MTV or some such thing.

"Oceans apart, day after day
And I slowly go insane…"

His eyes widened as the English lyrics seemed perfectly in tune with what he'd been thinking about moments ago…five weeks of being away from Rukawa…

"I hear your voice on the line
But it doesn't stop the pain…"

Talking on the phone…yes it was true…

"If I see you next to never
How can we say forever…"

Don't cry…do NOT cry…Hanamichi silently told himself.

"Wherever you go, whatever you do, I will be right here waiting for you. Whatever it takes, or how my heart breaks, I will be right here waiting for you…"

Danny looked at his friend's stunned face…"Yo, Hanamichi, you okay? See what I mean about these sappy songs, they freakin' get to you, man…"

"SHHH!"

"I took for granted, all the times that I thought would last somehow.
I hear the laughter, I taste the tears, but I can't get near you now.
Oh, can't you see it baby, you've got me goin' crazy…"

As the chorus repeated, Sakuragi looked to Danny with sad puppy eyes. "I miss…"

"I wonder how we can survive this romance.
But in the end if I'm with you I'll take the chance…"

"WHAA! Kaede! Don't worry baby, I'm coming to see you!"
