SLAYERS INHERITANCE âA Green-Eyed Monster! Is This What Being a Girl Is
Like?â by Michael Hopcroft
âAnya Inverse here! My family and I are trying to help a girl escape
from her Mazoku father, but you knew that already. Anyway, now weâve met
this family of dragons out in the country; old friends of the family. I
went off into the woods to be alone, but the young men of the house sort
of followed me and, well, letâs just say things got complicated. Not
that we actually did anything, but if that Mazoku hadnât interrupted us
â What am I saying? The boyâs a brat, a scoundrel, and a... I couldnât
possibly be attracted to him! Never! Not in a million years! Do we
really have to talk about this right now?â
âWeâre lost.â Anya said as she made her way through the woods, Valgaav
trailing behind her.
âWe are not lost.â He said, with something approaching a smirk. âWe just
got a little disoriented while we were fighting that Mazoku. Must be a
residual effect of its magic.â
âIn other words, weâre lost. If weâre not back soon, what will our
parents think?â Anya had a sudden inspiration. âNo! They couldnât
possibly think â Valgaav! Youâre doing this deliberately just to get me
in trouble!â
âOur parents wonât think anything except we got lost in the woods.
Besides, Iâd be in even more trouble than you would. MY mother is a
former shrine maiden. Your mother probably wouldnât even mind if you had
a little fling, but when Filia thinks Iâm involved with a girl I never
hear the end of it.â
âThen this has happened before?â
âOnly once. I learned my lesson.â
âEvidently not well enough or you wouldnât be getting girls lost in the
woods.â
Suddenly a horn could be heard in the distance. âAnya, is that somebody
looking for us?â Valgaav asked.
âThis is your neck of the woods, not mine.â
A man and a woman appeared behind a clump of trees. They were in green
hunting gear, and carried longbows slung around their backs. Anya
immediately noticed that both of them were incredibly handsome and
gorgeous, respectively. âAhoy, travelers!â the man said. âYou look lost!â
The woman smirked at him. âObviously, these young people only want us to
THINK theyâre lost...â
Anya bristled. âDonât joke around like that! And who are you anyway?â
âMy name is Gorvald,â said the man, âand this is Kressida. Weâre
rangers, as if you couldnât tell by our garb.â
Valgaavâs eyeâs narrowed. âRangers, eh? Didn't know there were any about
in these parts.â
Kressida smiled guiltily. âWe try to keep a low profile. You must be
Valgaav from the inn, right? Iâve seen you around these woods before â
who was that girl you were with then?â
Anya stamped her foot. âThat does it! Iâm going back to the inn by
myself! You can take all the grief from your mother you want!â
âAre you sure you know the way?â Gorvald said.
âIâll find it. Iâll see you back at the inn, you brat!â Anya stalked
off, visibly upset.
Gorvald shrugged his shoulders. âIâd better go after her. She wonât know
her way at all.â
Kressida nodded. âFine, Iâll take care of the boy.â
Valgaav stammered. âNo, thatâs okay. I can get Anya home. No problem.â
âI think itâd be better if you two didnât come home together,â said
Kressida, following it up with a sexy wink.
Valgaav was stunned. God, he thought, this woman was gorgeous. But Anya
needed him...
âThe girl will be fine.â Kressida said. âLetâs get you home.â
âStupid dragon! Stupid rangers! Stupid bloody woods! I ought to clear my
way with some fireballs!â Anya was in the midst of a full-blooded
tempter tantrum.
A booming voice behind her said âThatâs not the way back to the Mace and
Teapot.â Anya turned her head and saw that Gorvald was following her.
The first thought that crossed her mind was that this was a real hunk;
even more muscular than her father and with a finely-chiseled face and a
very, very strong chin. His shaved head completed the appearance.
âClearly you donât know these woods.â
Anya thought for a moment. âWait a moment â how did you know I was
staying at the Mace and Teapot?â
Gorvald thought for a moment. âValgaav told me? That doesnât matter. The
mace and teapot is the best inn in these parts, and it seems natural
thatâs where youâd stay.â
âIs that so? Well, weâll see if thatâs true when weâre all back together
at the inn.â
Gorvald grinned. âThen youâll accept my help?â
Anya shrugged. âWhy not? Canât be any worse than being led around the
nose by that stupid dragon.â
Gorvald walked over to her and took out a strange device that looked
almost but not quite like a compass. âThis way.â He said. âIf you follow
me weâll get back to the inn in half an hour.â
Anya stopped for a moment. âWait a minute. I changed my mind. The four
of us should really go together.â
âKressida will get him home, no problem.â
The two walked through the woods for a few minutes. âSo,â Anya asked,
âYou and Kressida â you a couple?â
âWeâre partners, if thatâs what you mean. You could say weâre working
towards a common goal. What about you and the dragon, as you call him?â
âWe just met.â But that didnât stop him from coming on to you back
there, Anya thought. Honestly, what was he thinking?
âThen heâs a fast worker. Here in the woods, people are pretty free with
their emotions. They tend to let their hair down and relax a bit. They
say thereâs some sort of aura to the place.â
âCome to think of it,â Anya said, âIâm sensing some sort of aura right
now. Itâs strange and unfamiliar, yet...â
âWelcoming?â Gorvald asked. âThe woods are like that. Some couples who
go into the woods choose never to leave. Whole families have sprouted up
in these forests.â
âThen weâd better get the loving hell out of here. I have a job to do.â
So do I, thought Gorvald, so do I...
Kressida smiled the smile of a predator that had caught some especially
luscious prey. âSay, you look like a nice, strong young man.â She said
to Valgaav. âWhat say before we go back to your inn we have a little fun?â
âMy mother would skin me alive if youâre suggesting what I think youâre
suggesting.â Said Valgaav.
Kressida licked her lips. âSheâll never have to know. Just a little
tumble? The girl will be grateful for it if you know what youâre doing
when you finally get her.â Kressida began to undo her top.
Valgaav shouted âAbsolutely not! I was raised with better morals than
that! So donât take that off!â
âYou donât understand, my boy, you donât have a choice. Youâll never
find the girl again, and youâll never get out without me. The price of
my help is your virtue.â
Valgaav snorted. âThen youâve just priced yourself out of the market,
lady. All I need to do is find a forty-foot clearing â ANY forty-foot
clearing â and Iâm out of here. And if I canât find a clearing Iâll make
one.â
âThen weâll have to this the hard way,â Kressida, said, leaping at
Valgaav before he could react. She landed on top of him and pinned him
to the ground.
âThatâs not possible!â Valgaav said.
âBelieve it, Gorgeous.â
âNobodyâs that fast, unless â MAZOKU!â
âYou know what they say, boy â when attacked, just lie back and enjoy
it!â Kressidaâs clothes began to melt into her skin, which changed color
to bright red. âYour girlfriend canât help you now, boy! Enjoy your
final moments on this Earth!â
Valgaav managed to free a hand. âI think youâll find I have a few
surprises myself, devil lady.â He reached up his hand to touch
Kressidaâs hair, and pull her head closer to his own.
âOh? Youâve decided to give in?â
Valgaav silently opened his mouth. Kressida smiled wickedly â then
blanched as she saw the light forming in the back of his throat. An
instant later a beam of shining, white light pierced through her head
and into the sky above. Valgaav hurled the inert body off of him and stood.
Iâd better get out of here, he thought. That wonât stop her for long,
and if sheâs a Mazoku then so is Gorvald. Meaning Anyaâs in danger! with
his breath weapon, Valgaav cleared enough space for him to turn into a
dragon. Then he hurled himself into the air to look for Anya.
Anya was surprised to see her mother running through the woods to meet
them. âAnya!â she said. âAre you all right?â
âIâm fine. I just got lost in the woods. This ranger helped me out.â
Filia ran up behind Lina. âWhereâs Valgaav? I saw his light deep in the
woods!â
Anya stomped her foot. âI donât know or care! Why donât you guys look up
in the sky? Maybe heâll fly home.â
âAnya,â Lina said inquiringly, âDid you two quarrel?â
âThatâs really none of anyoneâs business, Mom.â
âANYA! Donât you remember weâre on the run from the Mazoku? We need all
the allies we can get! We canât afford to antagonize Valgaav! And what
did you do in there anyway?â
âNothing! Nothing happened! Honest! Why donât you believe me, Mother?â
âBecause youâre sixteen, thatâs why! Youâre not in full control of
yourself.â
Filia turned her attention to Gorvald. âThank you for helping this
girl,â she said, âbut what about my son? Is he all right?â
âHeâll be fine.â Gorvald chuckled. âWith Kressidaâs help, heâs certain
to find his way.â
Anyaâs eyes narrowed. âKressida? I canât believe I left him alone with
Kressida!â
âKressida is a skilled woods woman. Heâll be fine. Weâre only about half
a mile from your inn. Well, I guess Iâll be on my way...â Gorvald turned
to leave.
âNo, stay.â Filia said. âAt least have dinner with us. Itâs the least I
could do.â
Gorvald smiled. âSure, why not? Iâm sure itâll be a change from trail fare.â
Valgaav scanned the scene from the air. He wished he could speak Common
in his dragon form. He swooped down and landed in front of the inn,
changing back to human before the rest of the group could arrive. He
only had to wait, and then he could confront Gorvald.
Very soon, the four people came over the horizon. âMan, am I glad to see
the inn! I canât wait to taste the dinner Titaniaâs prepared for us!â
Lina said.
Anya stopped. âValgaav! How did you get back so quick? Did that ranger
woman âhelpâ you?â
âI got out on my own, thanks very much. And you! Gorvald! You go away
now or face my ---â
âVALGAAV!â cried Filia. âNot one more word! You are in SO MUCH TROUBLE,
YOUNG MAN! How many times do I have to pull you out of messes like this?â
âMother, you donât understand! That man isnât what he looks like!â
âI DONâT WANT TO HEAR ONE MORE WORD OUT OF YOU FOR THE REST OF THE
NIGHT!â cried Filia. âAnd if you approach our guest that way one more
time, Iâll throw you out of my house! I didnât raise my foster-son to be
a letch! Now get inside and go to your room! Youâre not getting ANY SUPPER!â
Anya tapped Filia on the shoulder. âIsnât that a bit much, maâam?
Nothing really happened between us, you know.â
Lina grabbed Anya by the arm and pulled her into the inn. âAnd YOU,
young lady, YOU have a LOT of explaining to do!â
Gorvald waited while everyone else went back into the inn ion various
states of emotional disarray. He concentrated for a moment. A moment
later Kressida, back in her human form, was beside him.
âThe general is going to scold you, Kuria.â He said softly. âYou were
supposed to kill him by nightfall, isnât that what you promised Xellos?â
âHe caught me off guard, Gorian, thatâs all. It wonât happen again. But
look how well itâs working out. Just a few hours ago they were a
cohesive team, now theyâre at each otherâs throats. This will make your
job all the easier.â
âI suggest you drop the Kressida disguise and take another form. That
way the dragon wonât suspect you when you suddenly reappear at the
doorstep.â
âThen Iâm still on this job?â
Gorian smiled. âOf course. Canât send you back to Xellos a failure, now
can I?â
âCompassion is not a Mazoku trait, you know.â
âI know, but youâre extremely useful. Remain useful and you have a
bright future in the business. Lose your utility and youâre dead. Thatâs
the way of the Mazoku.â
Kuria laughed. âTheir discord will be a feast! And I just canât wait to
hear their dying screams!â
