AN: Wow, sorry for the delay. The last few days have been rather hectic. There was a death in my fiance's family. Needless to say, there was a lot of hurt and chaos. (Xellos would have loved it) I'll try to have the next chapter out as soon as possible.
Oh, and no killing the author for cliffhangers! I just can't break the habit…
The Meaning of His Kiss
Chapter 3
~~~ Two Weeks Later, near Seyruun ~~~
“Alright, time to fry some bandits!” Lina said cheerfully.
“My, my! You certainly seem rather cheerful today,” Xellos noted, raising an eyebrow.
“Well, the thought of `liberating' some treasure always lifts my spirits. This is bound to be fun,” Lina laughed evilly. Then she paused. “Hey, you're not just following me to get your hands on some ultimate magic item, are you?”
Xellos raised his hands, and shook his head innocently. “Nope. Just watching this will be most amusing!”
“Well, that's alright then,” the legendary bandit killer continued her laughter as she headed towards the den of the bandits.
“So, what's special about these bandits?” Xellos asked, walking alongside the redhead.
“Supposedly they've managed to steal a few important magical items, and are causing some trouble for citizens in Seyruun. I figured if I wanted to find out what they got, I'd have to get to them before Amelia or her father do,” Lina explained.
Xellos suppressed a shudder at the thought of the “just” Seyruun royalty.
“Then why don't we speed things up a little, ne Lina?” Xellos grinned maliciously.
Lina raised an eyebrow, but nodded. Xellos grabbed her arm and teleported them right over the bandits.
“Now this is what I call a surprise attack…” Lina laughed, powering up a fireball.
The massive magical fire shot into the largest group of bandits, sending bodies and flaming debris everywhere.
“Levitation!” Lina called, and began to float down towards the bandits. Xellos disappeared from Lina's side, and took up a perch on a nearby tree.
And that was just fine with Lina.
“You, sorceress! How dare you use a cheap shot like that!” a tall bandit called. He was about 7 feet tall, with short spiky black hair. He wore a simple black outfit with talismans on it.
“Are you the guy in charge?” Lina asked, sending a flare arrow behind her at a small group of bandits who tried to sneak up on her. “If so, then tell them to stop attacking me if you don't want them all to die.”
The man lifted a hand, and the bandits all stopped their attack on the sorceress.
“Who are you?” the man asked.
“Lina Inverse, and you?”
The man laughed. “Impossible. I heard she always traveled with a swordsman at her side. You're just a wannabe!”
“You who have committed terrible crimes and tried to thwart justice shall pay!” A cheerful young voice called.
“Damnit… Too late…” Lina hit her head.
“Miss Lina? What are you doing here?” Amelia asked, jumping down from her perch.
“What do you think? They're bandits, I'm Lina Inverse,” she shrugged.
“Oh! Well let us smash this injustice together again, Lina!” Amelia said cheerfully hugging the bandit-slayer.
“Oi, Amelia, they're getting away!” Lina said, struggling to breath.
“Don't worry, Lina-chan. I've got the leader!” the mazoku's voice called cheerfully.
“Xellos-san?” Amelia asked curiously.
“Thanks Xellos, I owe ya one,” Lina said going up to the guy and punching him across the face.
“Well now, he wasn't so tough… So he must have some kind of amazing magical item…” Lina mumbled.
“Mou… Lina, I'm sorry but the stuff he stole has to be returned to the royal treasury. He mostly stole healing items and jewels,” Amelia said softly, but firmly.
“Fine… This sucks. Looks like today was a bust too, ne, Xellos?” Lina asked.
“Not for me,” he laughed. Lina rolled her eyes.
“Lina, what happened to you and Gourry? I remember he showed up with Sylphiel, and he looked really sad when I asked where you were…” the princess hesitated seeing the look flash in Lina's eyes. She closed her mouth when she saw Xellos shake his head.
“I finally had enough of it. He's treated me like crap for a while, and I didn't want to hear any more. Besides, I think he was getting tired of adventuring anyway,” Lina said shortly.
“But why is Xellos-san here? Is something happening again?” she wondered.
“Who knows, he's Xellos. Look, sorry I can't stay longer, but I've got stuff to do. I'll see you around, Amelia,” and with that, Xellos placed a hand on the sorceress's shoulder and they disappeared as Amelia began to call out to her.
“…Ouchies…”
“Oh, I'm sorry!” Amelia said to the bandit leader she was stepping on.
“I'm sorry mommy… I won't do it again…”
“Oh my… Well, time to take you back to Seyruun…”
~~~ A little while away… ~~~
Two figures materialized a short distance away.
“Thanks Xellos…” Lina muttered.
Lina sighed, and then looked to Xellos when she noticed he still hadn't let go of her. She suppressed a small shudder at the intensity of his demonic eyes.
“Xellos…?” she almost whispered.
Without warning, the Mazoku pulled her towards him and kissed her. Lina froze with shock, still looking into his fierce eyes. Xellos wrapped his other arm around her waist, closing his eyes, and softening the kiss. Lina moaned slightly, relaxing a little in his kiss. After a moment Xellos released her and stepped back.
Lina took a deep breath to steady her.
“Xellos… why did you…?” she paused and shook her head.
“Sore wa himitsu desu!” he said, his usual grin on his face.
“Fireball!”
“Lina?” a voice called.
“Gourry?” Lina asked quietly.
Two figures immerged from the shadows of the woods. Gourry stood, looking like his usual self, Sylphiel at his side, looking uncomfortable.
“It's good to see you again Miss Lina!” Sylphiel said politely.
“Mou… Lina… That hurt!” Xellos complained from the ground, burnt as a crisp.
“Good,” with that, Lina smirked.
“Xellos?” Gourry asked, raising an eyebrow.
“Oh dear, are you alright, sir?” Sylphiel asked kneeling before the fried mazoku.
The swordsman placed a hand on her shoulder. “Don't worry about him. A mere fireball wouldn't really hurt him.”
“Oh, you're so mean, Gourry! And after saving your world too!” Xellos complained, standing, and without a scratch on him.
“You still just used us for your own ends. Friends don't do that,” Gourry glared.
“I never said we were friends, did I?” Xellos allowed one eye to open, and enjoyed the tiny shiver from the blonde.
“Alright, boys. Enough. Gourry, what's up? Why are you here? Shouldn't you and Sylphiel be in Sairagg by now?” Lina asked, stepping between the two.
“Well, we requested assistance from Seyruun. However, there was a bandit who stole some important royal items, and we agreed to help Amelia retrieve them. But we got separated from her. Would you happen to know where she is?” Sylphiel asked.
“Oh, she's fine. I took care of the bandits. She'll be back in Seyruun any moment now, you'd better hurry to catch up to her,” Lina said shrugged. She turned. “It was nice to see you. Take care!”
And with that, she disappeared into the woods. Xellos was already gone.
“Mr. Gourry, why wouldn't you let me assist Mr. Xellos?” the priestess wondered.
“Cause he's a mazoku. He was just pretending to be hurt. He's probably as powerful as the Hellmaster was at this point.”
“Oh my…”
~~~ That night, near a river… ~~~
“Well, today sucked. Wasted effort, and emotions…” Lina sighed.
“Not necessarily… I happened to notice something of interest on that wannabe sorcerer…” Xellos began, grinning wickedly.
Lina was at his side instantly. “Gimme!”
“Ah ah ah… You know I don't give things away for free…” Xellos smirked.
“Hey, at least tell me what it is then… Please?” she turned on the adorable puppy eyes in hopes that she could at least know what it was.
“I'll give it to you in return for one simple thing…” the purple haired priest/general leaned towards the sorceress, his demonic eyes open, captivating her red ones.
“Xellos, I don't like that look…” Lina shuddered, whether from fear or something else she wasn't sure.
“Kiss me. And you can have it,” Xellos whispered.
“…Alright…” Lina said, blushing. `Not like it would be the first time. This would be what? The fourth kiss I've shared with him…'
Lina closed her eyes as she leaned in towards him. Xellos placed a hand on her face, his lips a breath away from hers.
He suddenly turned his face so her lips met his cheek. Lina's eyes shot open for a moment, then she smiled and pulled back.
“So hand it over,” she said, grinning.
Xellos laughed as he pulled out an object wrapped in a purple cloth.
Lina snatched it from him and pulled the cloth away.
“Hey… This is…”
