Rouge looked at Shadow's body; it looked lifeless, hollow, lonely. She believed he was dead but, something deep inside told her to wait a little longer, so here she was today like every other day this week contemplating his every movement or sound. She was acting like her own mother, who got over excited when ever her baby brother successfully did something everyone in everyday life could do with ease. She remembered a time when she was but three and her younger brother was one, when the only problems in life for her was getting attention; It was a wonder to Rouge how he never even tried to win, her younger brother, but always did. Soon enough her thoughts went back to the present and she was back in the lazy boy chair, beside Shadow.
For the third time today she observed his features, she didn't have to look at him anymore to know what he looked like, but did it as a habit out of boredom. His appearance hadn't changed much at all from the two year old fight aboard ARK; the five quills on his head as well as the two smaller ones on the hedgehog's back hadn't gotten any larger or smaller, surprisingly his slim stature hadn't changed not even a little, and there was still the crimson red streaks on his quills, bottom of legs, and bottom of arms. What had changed about Shadow was that he was missing his trademark red, white, and black hover shoes along with his gloves. The gloves and shoes must've burnt off, reasoned Rouge, but she still couldn't understand why he had no burn marks.
Like a curious child, the bat cautiously transferred her hands over to the unconscious
Hedgehog but never got there. She pulled her hands back to the sides, where they were at first. Of course she had touched him before, back when she worked that wild mission with G.U.N. to find out whether or not the claims of his being the "Ultimate Life Form" were true, and she had touched him a week ago when she found him in the meteor, yet for some unfathomable reason she couldn't bring herself to touch him now. Maybe it was because he looked like he wanted to be undisturbed, but whether that was the reason or not for Rouge's unusual fear she couldn't verify.
She looked at her gold watch, it was given to her as a birthday present from Knuckles a year and a half ago- back when she was more connected with her friends, and realized she only had two more hours before she had to go to her lousy waitress job at The Breakfast House. The breakfast house is a new, famous restaurant smack dabb in the middle of Station square. The food is good, the place looks great, and the service there is absolutley perfect but what made the job lousy was because so many hungry men came there for all the wrong reasons. Similar to hooters, a lot of young and sexy women were known to work there and although that brought in more money for the resteraunt, there was nothing worse to Rouge than having dirty old men check her out. The only reason she had gotten the job in the first place was so she would have something to do throught out the day. She had a large house and enough money and jewelry to last a life time so the fact that money wasn't the best thing at the resteraunt did not bother her.
Silently, she scolded herself for staying up all night again. The last time she did that she ended up falling asleep while a customer was saying what she wanted to eat. The boss, a large, bulky, man in his mid fourties, had threatened to fire Rouge if she ever did it again. She couldn't remember the whole lecture the man gave her, just something about her “ruining their motto of good service.” No matter how much she hated the men that came there, she had to admit there was something she found intriging about the job. She could never figure out what. She took one last look at Shadow the hedgehog, upset he was making no progress of showing living signs, and went to get ready for yet another long day at work.
Sadly, while she danced and horribly sang her favorite song in the shower, she didn't hear Shadow murmur, “Bye Maria.”
