Well um... I'm still not too proud of it but here it is... I had a hard time writing this cuz' this part of Knuckles' 'adventure' really bugged the heck out of me. Let me be frank: it sucked. I'm having a lot of fun writing the second part...

Chapter 1-A Guardian's Tale: By Dragonessfei

It has always been my island, floating high among the clouds like a majestic bird, being kept afloat by the jewel of my being and everyone else's primordial desire. Without it or the Master Emerald I would be nothing, just another corpse devoid of any sentiment, any feeling that would make me a regular being. People with their obtrusions come and go regularly, always filling my life with unneeded adventures--sometimes annoying, sometimes exhilarating. But nothing in my sixteen years of existence could have ever prepared me for what I was destined to experience, something so horrendous, so outrageous, so-

"Splendid!" Eggman's voice rose I the air in a shrill cry, echoing in the distance like a clamoring bell. Immediately upon hearing this I opened my eyes and stood up quickly, eyes narrowed and alert, mind pulsating with the steady beat of rage. Why would he be here on my island?! Due to the rain-which fell in torrents-my eyesight was limited but I still could smell him, the scent of cigar smoke tinged with lard and hot metal. Instinctively, I sniffed the air, trying to decipher just where on the island the rank aroma was coming from. Just before I could do so I heard a crash-sort of like glass shattering-from behind me. I turned around quickly, the weight of my thoroughly drenched dreadlocks and fur causing the process to be slower than usual. Then I saw it, the perpetrator that caused all of this to happen. It was unlike any creature that I had ever seen before. Its body was translucent, appearing as if it were made of liquid. Two long tendrils sprouted out from its head, falling down to about where its knees were supposed to be. Its arms and legs were nothing more than stout structures that supported a 'hand' or 'foot'-which had only two fingers or two toes each. The thing that startled me the most was the eyes, which shone like two huge peridot stones, boring through my body and soul. What was this thing? And furthermore, what was it doing on my island? Then I found the answer. There, behind this disgusting creature was the Master Emerald-what was left of it. All that remained of the sacred jewel was a jagged base, laying in its container and glowing with a lustrous fury. Something snapped inside me at this moment. I became furious and depressed at the same time. It was plainly obvious who caused this to happen-it was standing right in front of me, face expressionless, eyes reflecting a malevolent evil.

"You did this, didn't you?" My words sounded choked, strained, as if I were in denial of what I said, which I wasn't.

The creature said nothing.

"Where is the emerald?!" I screamed, growing more irritated by the minute. "Give it back to me or else you'll be sorry that you ever came on my island…"

Silence.

With a loud cry I lunged at it, right fist extended to punch the living daylights out of the creature. Before I could do so, however, the creature jumped straight in the air and out of my sight, its rough skin making contact with my own as it did so. Surprisingly, it didn't just land immediately like something normal would do; instead, it flew straight up in the air as if it weighed nothing. I looked up at it, my eyes widening to impossible widths as it remained suspended in the air for a minute, eyes looking down on me threateningly. Before I had a chance to move, much less react to what was happening, it came down to the ground, the vibrations of its body impacting the solid stone hurtling me through the air like a rag doll. Almost immediately my body impacted the cold, wet earth, a sharp twinge of pain radiating through my body as a result of doing so. With a grunt I sat up, wiping mud out of my eyes and looking around to see where I had landed. Surprisingly, I was at the bottom of the shrine; that best had caused me to fall down this far! Grunting once more, I hoisted myself upright, ignoring the almost blinding pain that coursed through my right leg. My fur was coated with mud and fresh blood from open injuries but I did not mind it, all I could think about was death and revenge. A cry of battle escaped my lips as I blindly ran up the shrine's numerous steps, heaving my whole body at the beast that now resided at the top of it. Before I could reach the top of the altar, however, the best started to dissolve into the ground, turning into a large blob-ish puddle and making disgusting squishing noises as it transformed. I was slack jawed, watching this strange metamorphosis take place before my very eyes. Suddenly the beast disappeared as suddenly as it came, the puddle shrinking into nothingness as if it were never there at all.

"Wait!" I cried. But it was no use, it was already gone and it had taken the Master Emerald with it. Anger boiled heavily in my heart, popping and hissing loudly within my heart like a large cauldron of soup. My anger soon turned into nervousness as I felt the island shake underneath my feet, it felt like an earthquake had come upon my island, twisting and bucking harshly under my feet.

"This island is about to fall. Without the Master Emerald's power the island will surely fall into the sea." These words held no comfort for me; it only caused fear and trepidation to rise and take hold of my body. With an angry heart I gathered my strength-trying not to mind the pain in my leg-and ran towards the edge of the island, my dreadlocks catching wind and lifting me off the ground. My heart was pounding with adrenaline, my head-sore and pulsing with the rhythm of my heart and mind. As I took off my mind was soared as high as the birds in the sky but my heart was heated, burning with the anger towards Eggman and that beast, whatever it was. As I heard my beloved island fall into the ocean behind me I vowed to myself that I would get revenge from both of them; in the end they would pay for ALL of their actions…
