Baby I love you

Chapter 4.0

Sonic sprinted down his stone steps, almost loosing his footing and slipping in the mud. He ran as fast as his legs could take him in the heavy rain and the reduced visibility of the storm. Sonic raised his hand to shield his eyes, but tripped over a loose branch as he walked and fell it a tall patch of grass. Sonic lay in the grass for a second or two, but was soon back on his feet with his face focused on the sky. "I'm going to see him no matter what you have to say!" Sonic yelled at the sky. He received his answer of a sharp bolt of lightning that illuminated the sky for miles, followed by a large clap of thunder, which sent a shiver up and down his spine. He turned his attention away from the sky slowly started to job to Tails's house in the raging storm, still as strong as ever. Sonic snaked around the trees in the heavy rain and howling winds, forcing Sonic to a jog.

Finally, Sonic made his way past the waterfall and was within one hundred yards of Tails's house, arriving fifteen minutes later than what he wanted to. Sonic ran up the hill as fast as he could to the front of Tails's house. He stopped at the door and raised his hands to pound on it. "Tails!" Sonic called out. He got no answer except the storm, which was beginning to lose its intensity, but the rain still poured in buckets. "Tails, there is something I need to tell you." Sonic started, he slowly dropped his head, but continued to speak. "Tails, I'm sorry. I'm sorry for treating you this way. I should have stood up for you, I should have stood up for us. I wanted to though so bad. But..." Sonic raised his head back up, placed it against the door and took a huge sigh. " The truth is Tails, I love you too. It's been like this for the last couple of years. And yet, I treated you like dirt when you told me." Sonic wanted an answer, but there still was none. "But it can be different now, Tails! I promise. I'm over my pride and my ego. I don't need to be the carbon copy of a hero with some girl, I want you. I want to tell the world that I'm in love with Miles Prower." Sonic was sure that the door would open, but it still did not budge. "Tails! I need you." He began to yell as he slid to his knees. "I'm a wreck without you, please open the door." Nothing.

The rain still fell heavy even without the thunder and wind. Sonic was soaked, on his knees and crying at Tails's door. He was just about to leave until he heard a familiar voice, which allowed the hope to return to his heart.

"Sonic!" He heard the same low voice that was heard during the get together at Sally's house three weeks ago. "Tails?" Said to himself as he slowly brought himself to his feet, and turned around to see Tails, standing at the edge of the cliff, illuminated by the lights from the train station, his gazed fixed on the ocean. Even from far away and through the rain, Sonic could tell what he was wearing, the same black and orange shirt, with the new pants, now surely faded. Sonic was almost certain that he was wearing his necklace and charm as well. Sonic gazed down at his, brought it to his lips and kissed it for luck. He stepped forward and readied to speak.

"Tails, thank God you're alive! I have to tell you some..." Tails cut him off. " Don't worry, Sonic. I heard all that you had to say earlier, but I want to ask you something. Do you know that feeling in your head when you think that you're about to go fucking crazy?" Sonic looked confused. "Tails, what are you talking about?" Tails didn't answer but continued, his voice now being choked up as he was fighting back tears. "Or what about the feeling when your heart snaps in two." Sonic could now tell that he was crying. "Do you know that feeling? No, of course you don't. Well let me tell you, it hurts. It hurts more than you'll ever imagine." Sonic drooped his head a little and wiped a stray tear of guilt out of his eye. "That's why I've been out here in this storm Sonic for the last hour, I flew down to the bank and hid. But I've still been waiting for a bolt of lightning to just strike down and that would be the end of it." "You don't mean that Tails" Sonic replied quickly. "The hell I do!" Tails answered back. " Knuckles wants to kill me, Shadow avoids me, and you... you obviously don't want to have anything to do with me." "That's not true Tails!" Sonic said while trying to mask his obvious tears. "Oh, it isn't? If you loved me then we would be back at my house, together, under a blanket, watching a movie, keeping warm by the fire, and you'd be holding me in your arms." Tails was now starting to get angry, Sonic could see through the now moderate rain that his hand clenched into a fist.

"It's not gonna happen, is it Sonic! You ruined it! It's your fault!" Tails yelled. "Sonic stared to cry harder and advance at Tails. "I know I screwed things up, but it can be different. I'm telling you the truth Tails from the bottom of my heart." Sonic continued his advance. "I love y..." Sonic was stopped dead in his tracks and was at a loss for words as what was now unfolding. Tails had pulled a small pistol from his pocket and was pointing it at Sonic. "Not another fucking step." Tails said sharply. Knowing that Tails was at his most unstable right now, he knew that he was probably capable of pulling the trigger. "Tails, is that real?" Sonic asked him softly. Tails steadied the gun in his hand and aimed it at Sonic. "This is it." Sonic thought to himself. He closed his eyes and waited for Tails to pull the trigger. Suddenly there was a loud popping noise, which caused Sonic's knees to buckle. He waited for the bullet to enter his body and end his life, but instead heard the sound of glass being shattered. Tails had shot out his own window, proving to him that the gun was real. Sonic opened his eyes and questioned to himself why he didn't at least try to run. "Is it because I still feel guilty?" He asked himself. "Is it because I can't believe that I could be so shallow and selfish?" Not paying attention to Tails gave him the chance to now advance on Sonic. Soon, Tails was standing about an arms length away from Sonic in the middle of his front yard holding a gun to his face. Tails remained focused, now aiming the gun back at Sonic. "Think about it Tails, you don't want to do this." Sonic said calmly, trying not to make eye contact. Tails shoved the gun against Sonic's temple and yelled, "I'm way to smart for that touchy feely bullshit Sonic, we both know that!" "I know you're smart Tails. You're brilliant, but it's just that you know that this isn't what you want to do." Tails removed the pressure against the side of Sonic's head. He took a couple of large steps back and slowly raised the gun to his own head, his hand shaking uncontrollably the whole time. Tails closed his eyes and said quietly, "You're right......... this isn't what I want."

"Tails!" Sonic shouted. Tails acted as if he didn't hear him and turned his focus to the sky, allowing the moderate rain to hit his already soaked body. This is when Sonic truly took notice at what he had caused. Tails had a numerous cuts and scrapes along his chest from where Knuckles smashed him through the coffee table. There were cuts along his arms and scar forming on his forearm. There were numerous gashes around his neck and a bruise around his Adam's Apple. All could be avoided, had Sonic spoken up and said something. "Tails..." Sonic said softly. Tails snapped his head down and stared at Sonic, who now had both of his arms out and his head at the sky. "Shoot me." "What?!" Tails replied, lowering the gun from his head. "You deserve better than me." Tails appeared more upset. He turned around and hurled the gun over the cliff and into the ocean. He turned back to Sonic, who was still in his pose. Tails stepped forward and shoved Sonic hard in the chest. "I don't want better than you! I want you! Why is it so hard for you to accept that?" Tails angrily turned around and began to fly away. As Sonic dropped his pose and began to walk away as well, he heard the announcement from a distance, "Mystic Ruin Station will be closing soon. Last call."

Sonic wiped the tears away from his eyes and drug his feet as he stepped away. He wouldn't have given staying a second thought, had he not been stopped again from Tails's screams. "You lied to me!" Tails yelled from the railroad track bridge that ran through the ocean in front of his house. "You said you wanted us to be together, but now you're going to leave me here. We'd be home right now together." He continued. Sonic turned around to see Tails on the bridge, and images of the Station Square train hitting him filled his head. Sonic called out his name at the top of his lungs, however his only response was "Stay away!" Sonic again reached down for his charm and gave it a kiss for luck.

He ran as fast as he could alongside the edge of the large rock that separated Tails's property and the city's. He now was running on the rock at a 90 degree angle and began to form a crescent above the ocean. He stopped above the tracks and the tunnel and dropped down. Thankful that he didn't lose his footing, he started to walk towards Tails, making sure to not step in an open spot. "Sonic, damnit. Stop! It hurts to much. Please, just let me be." Tails yelled out. Sonic continued to walk until he could now touch the young fox. "Tails..." He said gently and rubbed the side of his face. " I should have been there, and now I am. I should never have turned my back on you. I truly do want to spend the rest of my life with you." Tails looked at him with puppy like eyes, every inch of his fur dripping wet from the still falling rain. "What about the others?" Tails asked quietly, almost like a child who was in trouble. "Well you know what Tails... fuck em'. If they don't accept us, then I will. I love you Tails." Tails started to sniffle and finally broke down, fell forward and cried in Sonic's chest. Sonic embraced him while rubbed behind his ears and said. "Shhhh, baby. It's okay." Sonic pulled his head from his chest and looked deep into his bloodshot eyes. He raised a hand to his face and wiped away a tear. "No more tears, okay. I'm here for you now." He said as he ran his hand up and down his cheek. Tails stared deep into Sonic's eyes and said gently. "Kiss me."

Sonic ran his hand to the back of his soggy head and pulled him slowly closer. Sonic closed his eyes along with Tails until their lips met. When it did, it was almost as if a gigantic weight had been lifted off of one another's shoulders. Tails seemed to be the aggressor in the kiss, which was okay for Sonic. Tails slowly slid his tongue into Sonic's warm, wet mouth. Sonic returned the favor and added some flare by licking his teeth and exploring the insides of Tails's mouth. The couple continued to lock lips, each with their arms wrapped around each other, not wanting this sweet bliss to ever end. Sonic could tell however, that there was danger. He removed his tongue from Tails's mouth and stood to look over his partner's head. "What?" Tails said sharply. "Look." Sonic replied, pointing at the train, roaring down the track. They were too far to run back to the rock, and Tails couldn't carry Sonic in the rain, so there was only one choice and that was jumping. Tails took hold of Sonic's hand, and stared into his eyes. Sonic glanced down and saw that he was also wearing his good luck charm of a clover, instilling more faith in Sonic. Sonic closed his eyes and waited for Tails to jump. He could feel the tracks rumble as the train drew closer. And suddenly, with Tails's weight pulling him, Sonic's feel left the railroad track just as the train rushed past. Sonic opened his eyes and smiled at Tails. On the way to the deep ocean, Tails and Sonic shared what they thought could be their last kiss.
