City Of Peril

Chapter 1: It All Started When…

Many rapid clicking noises were heard from the keyboard of Nightingale Zebedee, programming expert. She had entered hundreds of lines of instructions, and showed no signs of stopping. At a desk behind her, Billy was busy working on a chip to put those instructions in. Tails stopped in every once in a while, to check up on their progress and offer his ideas. The fox was preoccupied with something he had been working on in a different lab for some time now.

Outside, several of the others were playing a game of laser tag, firing invisible beams at each other. Scotty the hedgehog, crime fighter of New York, was hiding behind a large tree with his teammate, Sonic. On the other side of it, a red echidna slowly crept toward them. Knuckles knew where they were, he just wasn't sure of the best way to go about attacking.

Knuckles: <taunting> I'll find you…

Sonic: <thinking> Not if I can help it.

Sonic turned to Scotty, and whispered something in his ear. Scotty listened, nodding his head several times.

Scotty: <whispering> Okay, on the count of three…One…Two…Three!!

They both turned around, standing on opposite sides of the tree. The hedgehogs both fired at Knuckles, hitting him several times. The lights on his vest flashed as sounds played, telling him he was out of health.

Knuckles: <without feeling> Oh no…Look, I am dead. <lays down on ground>

The hedgehogs kept their guns pointed at him, unaware that a blue robot had risen from the bushes behind them. It fired several shots into both of their back devices. Caught by surprise, Sonic and Scotty turned around to see Metal-2 holding his gun victoriously. The hedgehogs looked down at their vests, and saw and heard the lights and sounds that told them they were dead.

Sonic: Hey! No fair!

Metal-2: It is perfectly fair.

Knuckles sat up, and shook the grass off of him.

Knuckles: Okay, but next time, you get to be the decoy!

Scotty: Decoy? So this was all planned?

Metal-2: Correct. Good strategy is often the best way to win.

Sonic: You tricked us! …Although…<jokingly> It was kinda fun to take down Knuckles…

Knuckles: I heard that!

They all walked toward the entrance of the base, but stopped when two familiar faces walked out. Dr. Arrow led Tails out of the door, and they were greeted by the others.

Scotty: Hey, where are you guys off to?

Tails: Dr. Arrow is taking me to go get some more parts for the ve-er-project…that I've been working on.

Sonic: So just what is this project?

Knuckles: Yeah, spill the beans!

Tails: Sorry, it's a secret!

Arrow: He won't even tell me.

They walked away, down the street.

Metal-2: He's been building it for a long time…What could it be?

Scotty: You know Tails…Whatever it is, it probably flies.

They all laughed at this, and went inside. It was lunchtime, and they were starved. A mountain of chilidogs disappeared in mere seconds.

Sonic: So, are you guys gonna have anything?

All: O.O

Sonic: What?

Scotty: Lunch isn't a race, you know.

Sonic: Maybe not, but I'm the still the fastest.

He started counting on his fingers as he continued.

Sonic: Yup, fastest runner, fastest eater, uh…

Knuckles: Obviously not the fastest thinker.

Sonic glared at Knuckles while the others ate. They were just finishing up as the videophone rang. Scotty went in and answered it. When he saw who was calling, he yelled to the others to come in. They did, and were surprised to see the face of none other than Robotnik himself.

Sonic: What do you want?!

Scotty: And how'd you get this number?!

Robotnik: That's not important right now. But I will tell you-Uh…Sonic, you have something on your face…

Sonic: That's the best insult you could come up with?

Scotty turned to Sonic.

Scotty: No, he's right, there's some chili on your mouth…

Sonic quickly wiped it away, embarrassed.

Robotnik: Rrriiiggghhtt… Anyway, I'm calling to tell you that-

Sonic: <without feeling> --That you've captured Amy and you want me to come rescue her so you can kill me and take over the world. Am I right?

Robotnik: …Uh…

Knuckles: Well?

Robotnik: …Okay, fine, you're right! But this time, I will not fail!

Metal-2: <sarcastically> Just keep on saying that, and it'll happen. Uh-huh. Sure.

Robotnik: Be quiet, you tarnish to my otherwise perfect record!

Sonic let out a stifled laugh.

Sonic: You're loopy if you think your record is perfect.

Robotnik: Here's how to get to where I am…

A map appeared on the screen. Scotty and the others memorized it.

Sonic: So, you're going to tell us where you are this time, eh? I guess you're learning not to waste time trying to stop us.

Robotnik: I don't have to take this!! Goodbye!

He hung up, and Sonic approached the videophone, and pressed a button on it.

Scotty: Sonic…What are you doing?

Sonic: Just watch…

A few seconds later, Robotnik's face reappeared on the screen.

Robotnik: What?

Sonic: Is your refrigerator running?

Robotnik: Yes, I think so…Hey, wait a minute! I know what you're doing!

Sonic: And what's that?

Robotnik: You're going to tell me to go catch it. Real mature, hedgehog.

Sonic: I guess you know me too well. In that case, is your dishwasher running?

Robotnik: <smugly> No, actually it's not.

Sonic: Then you'd better get a repairman!

Sonic hung up, laughing, before Robotnik could respond, and everyone stared at him strangely. There was a long pause.

Scotty: Sonic…Don't do that again.

Metal-2: Your jokes are worse than Knuckles's.

Knuckles: Hey!

Sonic: Well I happen to think it was very funny.

Scotty: <sigh> Come on, Sonic. Let's go rescue Amy.

Sonic: You know, I should start charging her for these rescues. I would make a lot of money.

Knuckles: <sarcastically> It's good to know you've got your priorities straight.

They all rushed out of the base, heading for Robotnik's most recent location. It was underwater, but there was a hidden entrance on land. They had considered the possibility of it being a trap, but it was the only lead they had, so they entered it. A long tunnel led downwards. It was poorly lit, but it didn't seem dangerous. Still, they were cautious.

Sonic: This too easy. I've got a bad feeling about it.

Knuckles: I'd rather it be easy than hard.

Scotty: I just hope he hasn't made this part easy so he can focus on making the rest extra hard.

Metal-2: We are nearing the end of the tunnel.

Indeed they were. In front of them, a plain, unassuming door with a push bar across the middle stood, closed.

Sonic: Do we just…go in?

Scotty: I wonder if it's locked.

Knuckles: One thing's for sure…We won't like what's on the other side.

Metal-2: I can't believe we're in this much danger so early in the story…

Sonic: Say what?

Metal-2: Nothing. Nothing at all.

Scotty: Well, I guess there's only one way to find out what's behind it. Knuckles, do the honors.

Knuckles: What?! Me?!

Sonic: You're not scared, are you?

Knuckles: No. Why don't you do it?

Sonic: Uh…

Knuckles: That's what I thought.

Scotty: Just do it.

Knuckles: Send the robot; it's okay if he gets blown up!

Metal-2: Decoy.

Knuckles: What did you call me?!

Scotty: Fine!! I'll do it! Geez!

Scotty walked closer to the door, his hand on his sword. Cautiously, he pushed the bar and opened the door. He cringed, but nothing happened. Scotty and the others slowly walked through the doorway into a pitch-black room. The door closed behind them, since it had an automatic closer. Now there was no light, and the silence was only broken by their whispers.

Sonic: Yup. Definitely a bad feeling about this.

Scotty: Is it just me, or does this room seem a little…large?

Knuckles: I don't know…You might be right.

Metal-2: I'm getting some very odd sonar readings.

Scotty: You have sonar?

Metal-2: Yes.

Sonic: What's sonar?

Metal-2: It's-

He was interrupted by a voice coming from unseen loudspeakers. It was Robotnik.

Robotnik: So nice to see you all again.

Knuckles: I don't get how he can see anything in this darkness…

Robotnik: What's wrong? Are you scared of the dark? Here, let me light things up a bit…

There were several loud noises as rows of lit up across the room. It was revealed that the entire base was one massive room nearly filled with water. The base was huge, and the roof was shaped like a dome. Metal support bars could be seen all across the ceiling, and near the center of it was what looked like a large metal box. Robotnik was nowhere to be seen, but they could hear him, and he could hear them.

Robotnik: There. Is that better?

Scotty: Actually, yes.

Robotnik: Enjoy your happiness while it lasts, because time's up.

Sonic: What?

Robotnik: Watch, and you will see why I am the greatest…

With that, the bottom of the metal box opened, separating into two halves. A few seconds later, they saw a familiar face being lowered down.

Sonic: Amy!

Amy screamed for Sonic, but her mouth was covered with duct tape. She was tied up, and attached to a metal cable that slowly lowered her toward the water. Around her feet were two heavy concrete blocks.

Scotty: He's going to drown her!

Robotnik: Very good, detective. Say goodbye to this annoying little brat, Sonic!

Metal-2: Not today!

Metal-2 flew toward Amy, and reached for her. But his hand passed through her arm, and he only grabbed air. He hovered for a moment, confused. Sonic and the others hadn't seen what had happened.

Sonic: Come on, Metal! Get her so we can leave!

Metal-2 made several more tries, each time getting nothing. Scotty then noticed the robot's hand reaching through her.

Scotty: Look at that! …Wait a minute…Metal, it's a hologram!

Metal-2 scanned Amy, and found that Scotty was right.

Metal-2: So it is. What have you done with the real Amy?!

Robotnik: Don't you get it? I didn't capture Amy! I captured you!

Scotty: It's a trap! Get out of there!

Metal-2 tried to fly away, but couldn't. Something very powerful was pulling him back, towards the box. The hologram of Amy disappeared as Metal-2 was drawn closer.

Robotnik: I see nothing gets by you, you green nuisance! But for once, I'm not doing anything illegal.

Sonic: What are you talking about?! You're kidnapping our friend!

Robotnik: I'm merely taking back what belongs to me!

Metal-2: I can't fight it…He's using a powerful electromagnet!

Scotty looked down to see the bottom of his Emerald sword being tugged toward the box. He quickly gripped it, to keep it from leaving him.

Scotty: No kidding!

Metal-2: Leave…Before he gets you, too!

Scotty: We can't!

Knuckles: We have to! Come on, there's nothing we can do!

They had to pull Scotty away, and back up the tunnel. Back in the base, Metal-2 let himself be pulled up by the magnet, since there was nothing he could do to stop it. Once he was inside, the box closed up. Soon afterwards, Sonic and the others arrived at their base.

Scotty: We have to get him back.

Sonic: I know, but we couldn't prevent his capture. If we had stayed, Robotnik probably would've gotten us as well.

They walked in, and were soon found by Tails and Dr, Arrow, who had returned from their trip. They both carried large, heavy looking paper bags full of various mechanical devices. Tails sat his down by the door and approached Scotty and the others.

Tails: Hey, guys…Um…Where's Metal?

Scotty: He got captured.

Tails: Oh, I see… CAPTURED??!!

Sonic: Yeah, Robotnik got him.

Tails: This is bad!

Knuckles: Don't worry, we'll get him back.

Scotty: Probably not without a fight…

Tails: What do you mean?

Scotty: The last time Robotnik captured him, he tried to reprogram him. I just hope we can still get Metal back.

Sonic: I hope so.

Their conversation ended when they were called into the other room by Sally. She was watching the news, and an important story had come on. A school bus full of children had been hijacked, and was now headed for the Brooklyn bridge…

Uh-oh… Looks like trouble… Please review!
